It’s even ore interesting. The rabatis a vestigial cassock left over from the days when the established clergy had to obey sumptuary laws and wear cassocks.

Among C of E clergy cassocks shortened and then the back was cut out (so one hears of 19th century bishop’s wearing “aprons”. And finally it was shortened to the rabat. And then the black shirt substituted for rabat.

And then, since it was frownedon for Catholicclergy to wearcassocks in public, their unifrom became the’frock coat’which was then adoptedbby some very “Anglo-Catholic C of E clergy.

It fascinates me what people wear and why.
