I never really understood the idea of a cloister. What’s the point of hiding away not making any contact with the outside world. How do you spread the Word of God?

Our church has different charisms, different ways to serve God. The way of the cloister is to be in prayer and contemplation for the world, so the prayer is constantly taking place.

My husband and I used to take daytrips to the abbeys when we were stationed in Germany. In the ones we went to (can’t remember the names) the monks would brew a fine beer and serve it up in very large steins ...great times and they’re located in beautiful parts of the country.

One of the Greek Orthodox monasteries has had enough of the trials and tribulations of Greece, so is moving to southern Arizona.

There are large parts of the US West that would seem to offer much to the cloistered. Unfortunately, the cost of building such traditional monasteries is quite high, which is a pity, as the West could use a greater sense of permanence and stability.
