If an angel stands before me I pray right now I pray He will upon me with favor.
One of my favorite portraits of President General George Washington...
Thanks for that
By an artist who died recently, named Arnold Friberg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Friberg
I know some parts about him are controversial, but I agree that Friberg was an amazing artist nonetheless.
I especially liked his portrayal of Moses, the Old West, and the American Revolution. He’s got a unique style that really conveys emotion to it.
Why is it improbable that Washington couldnt have a vision?
George Washington having a vision (moldy wheat) is nothing at all like what the old testament prophets had, in circumstance or content. Was George Washington caught up into the God's heavenly court and commissioned to bring covenant lawsuit against God's wayward theocratic vassal people?
Didn't think so.
This is a patriotic fairy tale.
He dies earlier this year.
Joel makes it clear that many people will have visions, dreams, etc, prior to the 2nd Coming of Christ.
Why the idea that Washington was not qualified to receive such guidance is silly.
“Snopes? Hahahahaha! You do know what Snopes is, dont you?”
Unless you intend to employ the Genetic Fallacy as an argument it doesn’t matter what Snopes is. What’s important is whether or not their information is correct. monkapotamus has found another source debunking the vision in post 39.
That was interesting thanks.
I meant the fact that he was a member of the Mormon Church was probably something which could be controversial nowadays. Not that this bothers me too much. He was an artist, with a special talent, who I admire for his portrayal of the Old West and American History. But for some reason guys like Glenn Beck somehow are a problem for a crowd here on Freerepublic, because of their affiliation. My stance on Mormonism is this: I don’t agree with them, but there is little rational threat from them to this country, even someone from that Church can tell the truth or contribute something good every now and then. Agree with me on that, Ripliancum?
I think some people get bent out of shape, but that's their problem.
BTW, to finish off my thought, more info that you probably wanted to know, but I find it fascinating. Here are the two paintings I referenced. The first one that Friberg did was from the Book of Mormon art, of a prophet seeing the finger of the Lord. DeMille thought it the perfect look for Moses. You can see the obvious similarities in his Burning Bush painting.
Friberg's illustrations were extremely close to the finished look and feel of the movie, and in the process of working on the film, Friberg and DeMille became close friends.
Which led to DeMille meeting the President of the LDS Church at the time, David O. McKay. Who invited DeMille to speak at Brigham Young University's commencement in 1957. Which he did. He basically gave a sermon about the Ten Commandments. He was quite a preacher. DeMille's relationship with BYU was such that after his death in 1959, his extensive archive was donated to the university. It is in the Harold B. Lee Library's Special Collections department, I've seen parts of it, it's amazing!
This smells pretty bogus.
The BYU special collections of all the Ten Commandments stuff donated by Cecil B. Demille. It’s separate from the Friberg collection.
Friberg did a lot of western oriented art, (Indians, mountain men, etc.) as well as his religious art. He also was heavy into depicting Canadian Mounties.
