A priest in the Diocese of Scranton has been removed as administrator of three Throop parishes after he inadvertently displayed four photos of what a diocese spokesman called "minimally attired adult males" before the 8 a.m. Mass at St. Bridget's Church on Oct. 25.
The Rev. Edward P. Lyman was using his personal computer to project an informational DVD about the diocesan Annual Appeal fundraiser when he accidentally showed the "inappropriate personal photographs" that were stored on his computer, according to a diocesan statement read at the Throop Masses on Sunday.
Diocese spokesman William Genello said the photos were not pornographic and did not display nudity or sexual activity. The photos were not of the Rev. Lyman, nor did he take the pictures, Mr. Genello said

“I was JUST seeing if you were paying attention...”
Hmmmm, seems like someones not going along with the celebacy thing.
They need to make those pictures public, so that individuals can decide for themselves the nature of the photos.

thats right..start first with the excuses...
another priest being protected....
“Father is not gay, just technologically impaired.”
Wow! My Hubby’s family comes from there. We were just there in June to attend a funeral.
Not to be Freudian about it, but it sounds like he was triying to get caught.
So why is this being reported then?? huh??
Hard to tell what was going on without seeing the photos.
“They need to make those pictures public, so that individuals can decide for themselves the nature of the photos.”
No thanks...
Maybe they were icons of St. Sebastian, like this one:

Maybe those folks in Scranton just don't appreciate fine art!
Could of been beach photos from a European vacation for all we know.
Overkill?
Spokesman says Father did not take the photos.
Perhaps he “inadvertently” received them and stored them in his computer.
"This event was greatly disturbing to those who were present at St. Bridget's," he said.
Diocesan leaders have made arrangements for the Rev. Lyman to "receive appropriate care for whatever has led to such behavior on his part," the Rev. Walsh said.
Mr. Genello would not say where the Rev. Lyman is living or where he is receiving treatment. His diocesan address is listed as the St. John the Baptist rectory at 520 Sanderson St. in Throop.
Things are a changin'!
If I was a bishop I would make it my business to arrive unannounced on rectory doorsteps and say "laptop please!"
“Hey Father, here are some photos from my vacation I like to share with you.”
I hate zero tolerance/overkill. Unless the Priest has shown “signs” before, benefit of doubt should be the case.
Another of the fruits of Vatican II?

One small detail mentioned in the Times-Call revision was that Whipkey "has had about nine years' of treatment" for his exhibitionist behavior. That would mean the Archdiocese of Denver's response, since 1999's "inappropriate personal behavior" was to keep him in therapy constantly.Related posts:
She’s obviously not a mooselimb.
That’s the jihadist view of heaven
That this priest is not immediately dismissed is the main reason I am no longer a practicing Catholic...
Excellent idea! If they are going to act like adolescents, they have to be treated like adolescents.
Rigali acted post-haste to get this guy out of a position of authority.
You’re so crazy. You make me laugh!
Don’t you just love that phrase “inappropriate behavior”?
Hardly anyone dares to call it “Sin” anymore.
What a weird guy!
In the old days, candidates had to undergo extensive scrutiny to become a Catholic priest.
It seems now that there’s a shortage, the door is open wide to all kinds of kooks and pervs.
But still slammed shut to faithfully married men.
Vatican II heretically contended that there are seperate paths to Heaven: some with Christ, some without.
A corrolary to that is “moral relativity”, more accurately called tribalism.
And that is a primary reason for the current state of things, of which this errant ‘priest’ is one indication.
Vatican II should be revoked.

Actually Vatican II said nothing of the kind. The Church has always maintained that anyone who gets to heaven gets there because of Christ’s grace.
Another gay priest. Shocking.
I know, right? Hope this didn’t make you faint.
Which necessitates accepting Christ.
Right?
Can an infant who cannot speak accept Christ?
If so, how?
How did Moses accept Christ before his death?
Even Abraham, how did he accept Christ before his death?
They didn't. And neither of those two guys is any hero of mine, so I have no need to affirm either.
Can an infant who cannot speak accept Christ? If so, how?
On a deeper level than words, yes, via purity of heart.
They still do.
That means they get “turned” after ordination.
I don’t buy that.
Buy what you will. I have a son entering seminary. The requirements to enter are daunting and extremely probing. There are 2 day psych exams, extremely personal questionaires, a required autobiography, medical histories, physicals, interviews with the bishop, vocations director, spiritual advisors, and that is all the preliminary application work any of which can disqualify you. Add to this the background check, fingerprinting, etc that comes IF you pass the first laundry list of hurdles and I can tell you this, any man who will stand up to the scrutinies put before a man who feels he is called to the priesthood, as well as the 8 years in seminary would have to be a very good liar with very bad intentions, which I would think would be a very small few now that its OK with society to be out of the closet, or they are called to the priesthood.
Oops!
That’s a good seminary...too bad they aren’t all that scrupulous.
I read here on FR that at some seminaries, nuns with PH.D’s in Psycholgy are doing the psych profiles on seminary applicants. Is that true?
Do you believe a young man will be as “honest” about some of the very personal matters with a nun?
(I am not being confrontational. I really want to know. They are still ordaining gay men in my Diocese.)
To be honest, I do not know about every diocese. I know ours go to a male doctor of psychology for theirs. I think alot of things are changing, and quite rapidly.
I pray it will turn soon for your diocese. I know our parish priest is a former marine LOL. He is the softest, but most traditional priest I know. He rules with an iron velvet glove when it comes to matter of faith and morals. He is a giant of a man at about 6’6” and built like a tank, with a booming Brooklyn accent. But I have watched him cry before the Eucharist, lay hands and heal folks and speak in tounges during a homily, then hop on his harley, cigar in mouth and take a ride. He is an enigma wrapped in a mystery and if this is the likes of the men being raised up today, Satan is truly quaking in his boots!
He sounds like my kind of priest!
May we get many more like him.
