UPDATE - PRAYER THREAD FOR MY HUSBAND - GOOD NEWS
11/6/09

Posted on 11/06/2009 10:30:35 AM PST by AnAmericanMother
Excellent news today from my husband's 3-month check on his chronic lympocytic leukemia.
His "bad" white blood cell count has increased only slightly in three months. This means two things: 1. the disease is in the early stages; and 2. it does not appear to be the more rapid form of CLL.
Thank you ALL for your prayers, good wishes, and support since this ordeal began back in July. FReepers are great prayer warriors!

We wait another three months and check the white blood cell count again. And in the meantime, as the haematologist said, we enjoy life. ("Easy for you to say!" I said.)
This sort of cancer, if it's not the kind that flares up, smoulders on for years with little change. It doesn't go away, but it doesn't get much worse either. If swollen glands in the neck begin to bother you, they can be zapped with radiation or surgically removed.
If and when it does flare up, it can be knocked down with chemo. Then you go back to square one and repeat as necessary.
Median survival is around ten years, but that's a very fluid number that depends on a lot of factors.
Sen. Fred Thompson was diagnosed with this back in 2003 or 2004, and he seems to be doing all right.

That’s wonderful news. My husband was also diagnosed with CLL in 2007 at age 36, which is very young for the disease. Since that time, his counts have remained about the same, and his CLL appears to be very stable. We have even been blessed with 2 beautiful babies since the diagnosis. Keep praying for him, and also make sure you are seeing a CLL specialist—especially if his numbers ever start changing. That is VERY important.

Always a comfort to meet another traveler on the road -- though sorry that you're here (and sorry that we're here too!) Glad to hear that your husband's counts are stable.
We're seeing the haematologist at Piedmont Hospital that was recommended by our internist (who is considered one of the better doctors in Atlanta). Piedmont is supposed to have a pretty good cancer center.
We have also checked with the Emory Cancer Center here, as well as the Mayo Clinic in JAX -- their read on this thing is precisely the same as that of our local man.
We will certainly get a second opinion -- probably with Mayo -- if the numbers undergo any major change. He's up from 7500 in June to 8000 3 months ago to 9100, which the doc says is not particularly significant because the count undulates within a range. The trend is upward, but slowly.
