Archbishop's Blog Slams Gray Lady's
NEW YORK POST ^ | November 3, 2009 | DAN MANGAN

Posted on 11/03/2009 7:34:58 AM PST by kellynla

New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan has condemned The New York Times -- blasting the Gray Lady and its columnist Maureen Dowd for what he says are examples of unfair, prejudicial and just downright mean anti-Catholicism.

Dolan used his blog last Thursday on the Archdiocese of New York's Web site to rail against the Times a day after the paper refused to print his critique as an op-ed piece.

He singled out Dowd -- a poison-penned, Pulitzer winner and former Catholic-school girl -- for "the most combustible," "intemperate and scurrilous" "diatribe" she wrote on Oct. 25, which "rightly never would have passed muster with the editors had it so criticized an Islamic, Jewish or African-American religious issue."

"She digs deep into the nativist handbook to use every anti-Catholic caricature possible, from the Inquisition to the Holocaust, condoms, obsession with sex, pedophile priests, and oppression of women, all the while slashing Pope Benedict XVI for his shoes, his forced conscription -- along with every other German teenage boy -- into the German army, his outreach to former Catholics, and his recent welcome to Anglicans."

Dowd's column, which zinged the Vatican for "two inquisitions" into nuns who eschew "old-fashioned habits and convents," was only the latest Times piece to spin Dolan's skullcap.

"It is not hyperbole to call prejudice against the Catholic Church a national pastime," Dolan wrote. " 'The anti-Semitism of the left' is how [poet Peter] Viereck reads it."

Dolan noted that an Oct. 14 Times piece about child sex abuse in Brooklyn's Orthodox Jewish community failed to demand what the paper had previously demanded of the Catholic Church: to release the abusers' names, roll back the state statute of limitations and release all records.

That's the whole point: to demonstrate that the left is completely hypocritical when they claim they're the "tolerant" ones.

I hope every other group persecuted by the intolerant bigots of the left whines as loud or louder. That includes gun owners, people who opt out of the government schools for their kids, pro-lifers, and evangelical Christians like yourself.

The naysayers have arrived! Hooray!

If the Presbyterian Church doesn't "whine" it's because there's no "incoming". If it ever finds itself in the cross hairs of the Brave New World, you'll know you're actually considered a threat and doing something right.

That's highly unlikely considering all you do is sit on your duffs telling each other that you're members of "the elect" and "already justified". What's hot on the news wires today about the PC's involvement in the culture wars?

That's right, nada.

If you don't want to help with the heavy lifting, at least don't get in the way.

You are correct sir. Any critcism of Romanism is automatically labled by them as “anti-Catholic bigotry”. Who knows, in this instance it might be the case, but since every criticism is met with the same response it just becomes the same tiresome shrill.

What is clear is that Romanism is infected with the identity politics of the Left.

Actually, what is clear is that some Protestants are happy to laugh with the left when the target in the cross-hairs is Catholicism.

It shows whom your real enemy is. Much as you profess dislike of the left, you dislike Catholicism more. It shows up on threads like this. You guys can't help yourselves. Here's Dolan taking on the New York Times whom I imagine is no friend of yours. So with whom do you side?

Naturally, The Times.

Allies of convenience for the day. We'll back off the left a little while they give the Catholics a good whoopin'.

Don't worry FRiend. The Puritan, anti-Catholic bigotry which runs deep in this country is going down!

No “bowing” in America.

We fought a war against the Brits so NO American would ever have to “bow” to ANYONE! But of course, “President” Hussein never learned that while he was at Occidental, Columbia or Harvard.

Ignorance is bliss!

FYI, the Vatican (plus a few Moslem countries) have and continue to be the main obstacles in the way of the UN declaring abortion a universal human right.

It will happen one day though and when it does the Catholic Church will likely find itself the subject of prosecution (and persecution) for "human rights violations".

A move which you will no doubt, cheer, if your interventions on this thread are any indication.

Such are ironic vicissitudes of the mob who call for Jesus' crucifixion.

I suggest you try and read Ms. Dowd's column the Bishop is referring to....it certainly was quite nasty and full of half-truths and lies. I could care a less about her beef with the Catholic Church, but she made many personal references about the Pope and Catholics in general that were certainly not worthy of print.

I wouldn't say at all that Catholics are whiners. If you are a parent and some idiot kid was tormenting your daughter, calling her names and spreading lies about her, would you sit back and let it happen? No, certainly not, you would DEFEND her whether it be through words or actions.

Thanks! I KNEW that was a 19th Century term! The picture is great!

As a former Protestant, I have to say that the many churches I frequented over the years, from Methodist and Presbyterian to non-denominational and Baptist, never used that phrase.

In fact, in all my years as a Protestant I never heard an anti-Catholic sermon or Bible study. So I don't know what fell patch of theology these folks come from.

How’s that limo ride working out for you?

There are actually quite a number of patches of these types. Depending on the branch of Presbyterian you came from, it is possible that you escaped the bile.

The varying hardcore Reformed, Churches of Christ, and Pentecostals form a large portion of the anti Catholic contingents both on FR and in the West (especially the US and Canada). Non denominationals are individuals that occasionally flock together over one issue or another.

As a history buff, I try to keep up to date on these things!

When Grover Cleveland was running in 1884 (the FIRST time, against James Blaine), a New York Presbyterian minister working for Blaine preached a stem-winder of a sermon condemning the Democrats as the party of Rum (anti-Prohibitionists), Romanism (nuf ced - though they meant the new immigrant Irishmen), and Rebellion (the Civil War was not all that long ago).

It backfired as the priests all took to the pulpits and urged their parishioners to get out the vote for Cleveland . . . . and he carried New York (and thus the election) by a good margin. Blaine said he would have won the state if the weather had been fine and that Presbyterian minister had been doing missionary work in Borrioboola-Gha.

The cartoon is by Thomas Nast, another anti-Catholic New Yorker. He was a brilliant cartoonist and a good family man and kind father, but he had a bug in his ear about the Catholics (mostly I'm sure because he was a member of the earlier wave of immigrants and resented the Irish). I'll forgive him because he torpedoed Boss Tweed and the corrupt Tammany Hall administration.

That was the Democrat version of the chant! The original was "Blaine, Blaine, James G. Blaine, the white plumed knight from the State of Maine!"

And of course the Republican riposte: "Ma, ma, where's my pa? Gone to the White House, ha, ha, ha!"

Blaine was pretty dirty. Gillam, a contemporary of Nast's who drew for the rival Puck magazine, did a parody of a famous painting by Gerôme, with Blaine being exposed before Chicago pols with his body tattooed with all his various scandals. The "magnetic pad" is a reference to his vaunted personal magnetism.

The courtesan Phryne beat a prosecution for impiety by having her counsel (one of her lovers) pull off her himation and display her beauties to the Areopagus . . .
