Brothers and sisters:
I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie;
my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness
that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart.
For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ
for the sake of my own people,
my kindred according to the flesh.
They are children of Israel;
theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants,
the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises;
theirs the patriarchs, and from them,
according to the flesh, is the Christ,

at the home of one of the leading Pharisees,

In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy.
Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking,
Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?
But they kept silent; so he took the man and,
after he had healed him, dismissed him.
Then he said to them
Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern,
would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?
But they were unable to answer his question.

The Year of the Priest
We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry.
Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf: Fill your priests with the sure knowledge of your love.

2. The Apostles Creed: I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
3. The Lord's Prayer: OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

October Devotion: The Holy Rosary
Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Pope Leo XIII personally started the practice of devoting October to the Rosary devotion. In a letter of September 1, 1883, mindful of the Rosary's power to strengthen faith and foster a life of virtue, he outlined the triumphs of the Rosary in past times and admonished the faithful to dedicate the month of October to the Blessed Virgin through the daily recitation of her Rosary in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, in order to obtain through her intercession the grace that God would console and defend His Church in her sufferings. We highly recommend that you read Pope John Paul II's Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, or "On the Most Holy Rosary." It explains even further this wonderful devotion, and introduces the optional mysteries of light, or Luminous mysteries.

TO THE QUEEN OF THE HOLY ROSARY
Queen of the most holy Rosary, in these times of such brazen impiety, manifest thy power with the signs of thine ancient victories, and from thy throne, whence thou dost dispense pardon and graces, mercifully regard the Church of thy Son, His Vicar on earth, and every order of clergy and laity, who are sore oppressed in the mighty conflict. FOR THE CRUSADE OF THE FAMILY ROSARY
The Family Rosary Crusade, organized and directed by Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., sought to revive the practice of families reciting the Rosary daily within their homes. The Crusade has the encouragement and support of Pope Pius XII and it is succeeding admirably in realizing the desire of the Pope that no family would allow a day to pass without the recitation of the Rosary. This prayer was composed by Cardinal Spellman when the Crusade visited his Archdiocese.
O Queen of the most holy Rosary: with hearts full of confidence we earnestly beseech you to bless the Crusade of the Family Rosary. From you came the grace to begin it. >From you must come the grace to win souls to it. We beg you to bless this Crusade so that from every home the incense of this prayer will daily rise before you, O admirable Mother.
O Queen of Homes: by the power of the Rosary we beseech you to embrace all the members of our family in the love of your Immaculate Heart. May you abide with us and we with you, praying to you while you pray for us. May you preside in our homes as once you did at Nazareth with Jesus and Joseph, filling them with the holiness of your presence and inspiration.

them belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the wor-
ship, and the promises; [5] to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race,
according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed for ever.

Commentary:
Chaps. 9-11. In these chapters—as we indicate in the title given to this section
of the letter—St Paul deals with “God’s plan for the chosen people.” The Apostle
explains that Israel, as a people, in general has failed to accept the Gospel des-
pite the fact that God’s promises of salvation were made to the Jews in the first
instance.
3. There is an apparent contradiction between what is said here—”I could wish
that I myself was accursed and cut off from Christ’—and what is said earlier (cf.
8:31ff) about nothing being able to separate us from the love of Christ. The two
ideas in fact complement one another. God’s love moves us to love others so
intensely that we are ready to suffer anything if it means the conversion of others
to God. Paul is not referring to permanent separation from God, that is, eternal
damnation, but to being ready to renounce any material or spiritual favor God
might grant us. This means that we should be ready to bear public opprobrium
and be taken for evildoers, as Jesus was. Some writers have interpreted the
verse as meaning that the Apostle is even ready to renounce eternal happiness,
but obviously what we have here is typical oriental exaggeration, rather like what
Moses said when he interceded with God on behalf of those Israelites who had
fallen into idolatry: “[If thou wilt not forgive their sin] blot me, I pray thee, out of
thy book which thou hast written” (Ex 32:32). Both Moses and Paul know that
God loves them and protects them and that the vision of God necessarily involves
the indescribable happiness of heaven, but they want to make it plain that they
put the salvation of the chosen people ahead of their own personal advantage.
4-6. The Israelites are the descendants of Jacob, to whom God gave the name
Israel (cf. Gen 32:29). The fact that they are children of Israel is the basis of the
privileges which God bestows on them in the course of Salvation History—firstly,
their status as the people of God, chosen as the adoptive sons of Yahweh (cf.
Ex 4:22; Deut 7:6); also their being given the “glory” of God who dwelt in their
midst (cf. Ex 25:8; Deut 4:7; Jn 1:14); their good fortune in being able to offer
worship proper to the one true God, and in receiving from him the Law of Moses,
which spelt out the principles of the natural moral law and revealed other aspects
of God’s will; and, finally, their being the recipients of oft-repeated messianic
promises.
The remarkable honor bestowed on the chosen people is to be seen most clearly
in the fact that God himself chose to assume a human nature which had all the
characteristics of the Israelite race. Jesus Christ, as true man, is an Israelite
“according to the flesh”, and he is true God because he is “God above all, bles-
sed for ever.”
Similar statements made in other epistles of St Paul about the mystery of the
Incarnation manifest Christ’s two natures and one Person (cf. Rom 1:3-4; Phil
2:6-7; Col 2:9; Tit 2:13-14).
In the present passage, this statement appears in the form of a “doxology” or
paean of praise to God, one of the most solemn ways in which Yahweh is exal-
ted in the Old Testament (cf. Ps 41:14; 72:19; 106:48; Neh 9:5; Dan 2:20; etc.).
By calling Jesus Christ “God, blessed for ever” his divinity is being declared in
a most explicit manner.

1-6. Fanaticism is always evil. It often causes blindness and leads a person, as
in this case, to deny the principles of justice and charity and even basic humani-
tarianism. We should never be fanatical about anything—no matter how sacred
it is.

| The word of God is alive and active |
|
The word of God is something alive and active: it cuts like any double-edged sword but more finely. These words tell us how much power and wisdom there is in the word of God for those who seek Christ, who is the word and the power and the wisdom of God. This word, with the Father from the beginning and co-eternal with him, came at its own chosen time, was revealed to them, was proclaimed by them, and was humbly received in faith by its believers. A word, therefore, in the Father; a word in the mouth; and a word in the heart.
This word of God is alive. The Father gave it life coming from itself just as the Fathers own life comes from himself. The word is not just alive, therefore, it is life, as it said itself: I am the way, the truth, and the life. Since the word is life, the word is alive to give life. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to anyone he chooses. He gives life, as when he calls the dead man out of the tomb, saying Lazarus, come forth.
When this word is preached, the voice of its preaching which is heard outwardly calls forth a voice of power that is heard inwardly, that voice by which the dead are restored to life and their praise raises up sons for Abraham. So this word is alive in the heart of the Father, alive in the mouth of the preacher, and alive in the hearts of those who believe and love. If a word is alive in this way, how can it not also be active?
The word is active in creating, active in guiding the world, active in redeeming the world. What could be more active? What could be more powerful? Who shall tell of his powerful deeds? Who shall proclaim the praises of the Lord? It is active when it works, it is active when it is preached. For it does not come back empty-handed: wherever it is sent, it prospers.
It is active and cuts finer than a double-edged sword when it is believed and loved. For what is impossible to the believer? What is hard for the lover? When this word speaks, its words transfix the heart like a flight of sharp arrows, like nails hammered deep into its very essence. This word is sharper than a double-edged sword in that it cuts deeper than any strength or power, it is finer than anything made by human ingenuity, sharper than any human wisdom or learned speech.

THEOPHYL. As though He said, If the law forbids to have mercy on the sabbath-day, have no care of your son when in danger on the sabbath-day. But why speak I of a son, when you do not even neglect an ox if you see it in danger?
BEDE; By these words He so refutes His watchers, the Pharisees, as to condemn them also of covetousness, who in the deliverance of animals consult their own desire of wealth. How much more then ought Christ to deliver a man, who is much better than cattle!
AUG. Now He has aptly compared the dropsical man to an animal which has fallen into a ditch, (for he is troubled by water,) as He compared that woman, whom He spoke of as bound, and whom He Himself loosed, to a beast which is let loose to be led to water.
BEDE; By a suitable example then He settles the question, strewing that they violate the sabbath by a work of covetousness, who contend that he does so by, a work of charity. Hence it follows, And they could not answer him again to these things. Mystically, the dropsical man is compared to him who is weighed down by an overflowing stream of carnal pleasures. For the disease of dropsy derives the name of a watery humor.
AUG. Or we rightly compare the dropsical man to a covetous rich man. For as the former, the more he increases in unnatural moisture the greater his thirst; so also the other, the more abundant his riches, which he does not employ well, the more ardently he desires them.
GREG Rightly then is the dropsical man healed in the Pharisees' presence, for by the bodily infirmity of the one, is expressed the mental disease of the other.
BEDE; In this example also He well refers to the ox and the ass; so as to represent either the wise and the foolish, or both nations; that is, the Jew oppressed by the burden of the law, the Gentile not subject to reason. For the Lord rescues from the pit of concupiscence all who are sunk therein.

The prayer of the Rosary has showered down untold blessings upon mankind throughout the ages. Through the Rosary, today as in past times of peril that have threatened civilization, Mary has come to save mankind from the evils that overwhelm us. Use the Rosary to strengthen the unity of family life, so easily weakened by the modern world. It will be a source of great blessing, the greatest of which is peace founded on love.
Meditation - The Rosary
If we consider the power of the Rosary as seen in its effects, we find a great abundance of proofs of its wonderful value. Many are the favors granted to private individuals through its devout recitation: there are few devoted users of the Rosary who cannot testify to experiencing its power in their own lives. If we turn to history, we see many "real" triumphs of the Rosary. Early tradition (the question of its authenticity is, of course, intertwined with the question of St. Dominic's role) attributes the defeat of the Albigensians at the Battle of Muret in 1213 to the Rosary. But even those who do not accept this tradition will admit that St. Pius V attributed the great defeat of the Turkish fleet on the first Sunday of October, 1571, to the fact that at the same time the Rosary confraternities at Rome and elsewhere were holding their processions. Accordingly, he ordered a commemoration of the Rosary to be made on that day. Two years later, Gregory XIII allowed the celebration of a feast of the Rosary in churches having an altar dedicated to the Rosary. In 1671, Clement X extended the feast to all Spain. A second great victory over the Turks, who once, like the Russians, threatened the ruin of Christian civilization, occurred on August 5, 1716, when Prince Eugene defeated them at Peterwardein in Hungary. Thereupon Clement XI extended the feast of the Rosary to the whole Church.
Today, when dangers far greater than those of the ancient Turks threaten not only Christianity but all civilization, we are urged by our Blessed Mother to turn again to the Rosary for help. If men in sufficient numbers do this, and at the same time carry out the other conditions that she has laid down, we have the greater reason for confidence that we will be delivered from our dangers.

The Word Among Us
Meditation: Luke 14:1-6
Once again, Jesus found himself in the middle of a controversy.
The Pharisees who confronted him held to a limited interpretation of Gods commands, which led them to suspect Jesus and look for any opportunity to trip him up. For his part, Jesus took their scrutiny as a chance to teach them about the heart of Gods law, which consists of mercy and healing.
When Jesus healed the man with dropsyan ailment that caused excessive retention of fluidhe once more confronted these Pharisees narrow understanding of Gods ways. Their rigid application of sabbath law left no room for the love and mercy that are the foundation of every one of Gods commands. Jesus addressed this rigidity directly. If any sensible person would rescue a farm animal in mortal danger on the Sabbath, how much more would God want to rescue one of his children in need? Of all the days of the week, the Sabbath would be the most appropriate day for someone to receive Gods healing touch.
The sabbath rest God wants for us comes from an intimate experience of his lovean experience that places peace in our hearts, no matter what our circumstances. Jesus came to inaugurate this sabbath rest on earth through his suffering, death, and resurrection. As his people, we can now experience it in increasing depth. In this rest, we know God as our Father, and we know we belong to him. We learn to trust in his provision and surrender our lives to his care.
How can you experience Gods rest? The most essential element is prayer, which puts us into contact with the realities of Gods kingdom. Quieting your mind as you dwell on a passage from the Bible or as you focus your attention on a favorite crucifix can make it easier for Gods life to penetrate your heart. Perhaps playing some worshipful music and singing along, or quietly chanting the rosary or a psalm can give you a sense of quiet and release. Whatever you do, know that Jesus is searching for you even more eagerly than you are looking for him. So try to let go just a little bit, and let him find you!
Lord Jesus, I open my heart to you now. May I enter into your rest and experience your presence. Help me to see that love is at the heart of your law.

Luke 14: 1-6
On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, "Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?" But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. Then he said to them, "Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?" But they were unable to answer his question.
Introductory Prayer: Lord, I believe in you with a faith that never seeks to test you. I trust in you, hoping to learn to accept and follow your will, even when it does not make sense to the way that I see things. May my love for you and those around me be similar to the love you have shown to me.
Petition: Lord, may I be a witness to you in the face of a world that often does not care.
1. And They Watched Him The Lord knows the thoughts of these men. With his question, he makes public their foolishness: God blesses on the seventh day, while they prevent good works on that day. It would seem that a day that does not allow the doing of good works is accursed. Let us be sure always to seek the will of God in our lives, so that we might use every minute of every day for the glory of God.
2. They Kept Silent The man with dropsy does not ask to be healed, perhaps out of fear of the watching Pharisees, yet Christ knows what he desires in his heart. Jesus is not concerned that this good work might scandalize the Pharisees; he is concerned about doing good. The Pharisees keep silent because they know that Jesus will give this man something they dont have their hearts have become closed to the man. We need to desire good for everyone. A sign that our hearts are becoming hardened to Our Lord, perhaps like the Pharisees, is when we begrudge the good that befalls others or even wish others harm. When we are mindful that we are beggars before God, its much easier to be merciful with others.
3. Keep Your Eyes on Christ In this Gospel passage, both the Pharisees and the man suffering from dropsy are looking at Christ. The Pharisees look at Christ with skepticism that will not be overcome by any miracle; the suffering man looks at Christ with the eyes of his heart. This man desires something that only Christ can give him, and Christ will not be outdone in generosity. We dont know what becomes of this man. We can only imagine the great testimony he gives to all about Christ and how he cured him, even under the scrutiny of the Pharisees. As Pope John Paul II told us so many times, Do not be afraid!
Conversation with Christ: Lord, help me to see with the eyes of faith all that you do in my life, especially when I dont understand why you are doing it. Help me to witness to others all that you have done for me and my family. May I never take for granted the graces that you give me.
Resolution: I will say a prayer today for someone I know who has not opened his heart to Christ because of lack of faith or skepticism. Through my prayers and example, may I once again try to bring Christ into that persons heart. |

Jesus was a good Jew and he loved the law, because its purpose was to help people do right by one another and in the process to grow closer to God. That was the laws purpose, but all too often its not what happened. Many people, especially those who were experts in the law, became fixated on the externals and on all the minuscule details of thousands of rules and regulations, and they forgot the larger purpose behind the rules. Notwithstanding that, they seriously thought they were doing just fine, and they went so far as to attack Jesus for not being like them. Imagine, they said, curing sick people on the sabbath! No wonder Jesus said, The letter of the law kills, but the spirit gives life.
Its a problem that confronts people of every age: Following the letter of the law, but missing its real point and its inner truth. It happens when we live on the surface and dont go any deeper. And it leads us into a kind of self-righteous blindness that proclaims to the world that were just fine, even though we arent. So whats the answer? Ignore the rules and forget the law? Not at all. The real answer is to look inside the rules, find their real purposes, and then commit ourselves to those purposes, which may even cause us to set aside this or that man-made rule from time to time.
So how are we doing? Here are some questions that may help us find out. Do I generally know the why of my actions or do I just run on radar? Do I keep Gods people at the center of my screen, or do I focus mainly on keeping the rules? As I interact with people, is my primary goal to help them become more alive and more true?
If the answer to any of those questions is no, Jesus has some urgent inner work for us, and it needs to be done now!

Jesus loves Jews. Jesus chose to be a Jew. Jesus is God (Jn 1:1, 14). Therefore, God is Jewish. If we love God, we must love Jews. We must love Jews so much that we would do anything (Rm 9:3) to lead them to accept Jesus as King of the Jews. First, we should apologize to Jews for the sins we have committed or let be committed against them. Then we should "pray for the peace of Jerusalem" (Ps 122:6) and care so much for the Jewish people that, like Jesus, we would weep over Jerusalem (Lk 19:41). Jesus wants to gather His Jewish children "together as a mother bird collects her young under her wings" (Lk 13:34). The Lord has promised: "I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery lest you be conceited; blindness has come upon part of Israel until the full number of Gentiles enter in, and then all Israel will be saved" (Rm 11:25-26). Love Jesus, the Jew. Love the Jews enough to invite them to accept Jesus as the "King of the Jews" (Jn 19:19). |
