The following message (though not this picture) was posted yesterday on the Mormon Church's public affairs blog. It explains the group's unhappiness with recent news reports that refer to "splinter groups" which hive off from the Salt Lake City-based "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (AKA "the Mormon Church") as "Mormons."
These splinter groups (AKA "Mormon Fundamentalists") assiduously devote themselves to the practice of the doctrine of polygamy (which was renounced by THE Mormon Church in 1890) and around whichever Viagra-addled alpha male has set himself up as the prophet, seer, and revelator for that particular harem.

“Fake Mormons?” You mean like Dingy Harry?
Or is that a “Jack Mormon?” I forget.
Not to throw stones, but I have a problem with Mormons referring to themselves as Christians. I guess we all have to give a little.
As a Catholic, I feel the same way about the Kennedy family.
Every religious group, political group, movement, member defines the “real members “ of the group, as themselves and everyone else more “holy” etc than they are... but nobody any less.
And yet Mormons get fired up when informed they are not Christians.
Oh the irony.
But the Fundamentalist Mormons consider themselves to be the “real” Mormons and the LDS Mormons to be the fake Mormons.
I guess the Mormons now know how Christians feel when Mormons call themselves Christian.
>>>Not to throw stones, but I have a problem with Mormons referring to themselves as Christians. I guess we all have to give a little.<<<
Great point! I guess now they know how we feel.
That's not entirely true. Most Christian denominations accept other Christian denominations as being "real" Christians. They draw the line at Mormons and Joseph Smith because either the nature of God and/or the nature of salvation has been changed.
No, according to the Oct. 23 Salt Lake Trib: Bennett's Utah Senate colleague, Orrin Hatch, says it's not fair for fellow Mormons to disparage Reid as anything but a devout Mormon..."I can personally tell you that Harry is a good member of the LDS faith and he was expressing a personal opinion that his side feels very deeply about," Hatch says.
The article also said: Today, Reid, with his security escort in tow, likely will be making his [Lds] home teaching rounds after his [Lds] ward's three-hour service. Anyone who questions his Mormon credentials should see that, says Jim Vlock, his home-teaching companion.
Besides, BYU hosted Reid for an all-out rally/speech two years ago this month, giving him a "warm reception."
So, the Lds church not only wants to ex-communicate earthly polygamists, but they want to exorcise them of any "Mormon" title, eh?
Well, I've got a better idea...why don't they just deal with what's in their "domain?"...they could start by ex-communicating Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, both of whom they contend are practicing Kolobian polygamy right now -- on the other side of the veil. Then they could do the same for all the other polygamist "prophets" and "apostles" in their church who followed in Smith/Young's footsteps.
From the Lds press release: Journalists who use the word "Mormon" in relation to polygamist groups unassociated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints cause enormous amounts of confusion in the minds of their readers. Particularly internationally, readers do not distinguish between these groups and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which there are over 13.5 million members worldwide.
Well, what about when these journalists use "Mormon" to describe 19th-century Polygamist Mormons -- and early 20th-century Lds Polygamist Mormons? Is that confusing, too? Somebody needs to ask these P.R. "specialists" -- "Hey, if it's OK to describe Mormon leaders from a few generations ago as polygamists, what's the big deal now?"
From the Lds press release: A few weeks ago I was in Korea and spoke with some of the Church's Public Affairs media representatives there. They expressed frustration with international wire services that inappropriately use the term "Mormon" in their stories in association with fringe polygamists groups. The Korean press often reruns these stories with the wire service inaccuracies. The effect of such misinformation in Korea, and other countries where the Church has fewer members and is less well known, is much greater.
So now how the fLds want to self-describe is "inappropriate"? Well, we Christians think it's "Inappropriate" for Mormons to identify to Jesus Christ if they're going to continue to identify Him as a "brother" to Satan instead of Lucifer's creator!!!
Amazing.
>>So now how the fLds want to self-describe is “inappropriate”? Well, we Christians think it’s “Inappropriate” for Mormons to identify to Jesus Christ if they’re going to continue to identify Him as a “brother” to Satan instead of Lucifer’s creator!!! <<
This!!
It is a smorgasbord of delicious, yummy, chock full of funny irony...
Oh snap. Good point.
Ping
Hive off?
MINO!
I also serve on several ecumenical groups, and while there are difference in liturgy, procedure etc. the salvation is the same.
We (baptists) will actually make you be rebaptised by full emersion when you join us. But we don’t consider the baptism to save you, and we don’t consider you unsaved when you come to us from one of those sister churches.
The fundie Mormons are actually truer to Joe Smith than the Salt-Lake-Mormon-Lite-types are???
Who’da thunk it?
How about?
Anti-Mormon
Jack-Mormon
Apostate-Mormon
Lapsed-Mormon
Ex-Mormon
Post-Mormon
Former-Mormon
And many more that I wouldn’t dare mention on this special thread.
Of course I think the DoC does full immersion as well so that maybe the key.
Still the same Christ though, all of us would recognize him no matter the Church.
I myself fit those categories....let’s see:
Anti-Mormon ...check
Jack-Mormon ...check
Apostate-Mormon ...check
Ex-Mormon ...check
Post-Mormon ...check
Former-Mormon ...check
AND Born-in-the-Covenant-Mormon, sixth-generation-Mormon, but most importantly....Mormon-no-more!
Yes, if it was full immersion, they would accept it.
There's also:
Cafeteria Mormon
Temple Mormon
TBM (True-Believing Mormon)
They would take my Methodist one as well since it was in a lake. We Methodist will get water on you anyway we can. I would not be surprised if there is a super soaker as some Church camp...
Hallelujah, sister!
I guess that must vary Church to Church among the Baptist since I know a Disciples of Christ member who joined a local Baptist congregation.
DannyTN:
Yes, if it was full immersion, they would accept it.
Baptist Church is sort of a generic phrase and I certainly cannot speak for all Baptist churches but member churches of the Southern Baptist Convention are autonomous and abide by their own rules about accepting other church's baptisms.
My Baptist church by no means will accept all full immersion baptisms and would not accept Disciples of Christ's Baptisms, General Baptist and a host of others.
Members only communion too.
Does that mean FAKE Christians still want to be called MORMONs?
Jack Mormons: they just ain’t what they used to be...
Amen.
I have a sincere question.....so don’t flame me, please.
Someone just mentioned that a major difference between Mormons and Catholics is that Mormons believe Jesus to be the “son” of God, while Catholics believe Jesus is the son of God and IS God.
I have to go out for the next few hours. BBL
I do know one does members only communion and one doesn't.
What is odd is my old Methodist church did that as well but the one I attend now is open.
Mormons believe God is a being of flesh and bone, Jesus is a completely separate being who was a product of God the Father and Mary having "relations". The fun thing is when it comes to the fact the Jesus is God as well, as it is clearly stated in the Bible. They tend to avoid speaking about that one directly
So now if he is God and God is God but they are both totally distinct and separate (no trinity) beings, two personages as it were, then how many gods do you have.
And that is before you toss in the Holy Spirit...
And the Mormons who have successfully done the duty and attained godhood in their own right...
But they are not Polytheist...
Like I often say, they believe in only one god, just a lot of them.
Major difference is this:
Catholics say Jesus = the Son of God
Mormons portray Jesus as a son of God
Reason: You were both supposedly born as spirits to God the Father & his wives in the pre-existense. Jesus was the first-born. Lucifer came shortly thereafter. You came further down the line.
There. (You didn't know Satan was your "elder brother" per Mormonism, did you?)
Real Mormons Don’t Want Fake Mormons to Be Called “Mormons”
______________________________________________
I havent heard the REAL FLDS say this...
But I’m sure they dont l;ike it when that spincter group in SLC calls themselves “mormons”
Joey Smith and Brigham Young wouldnt have called them moermons...
Joey and Brigham would have avoided SLC as it is today...
The everLassting covenant as commanded by the mormon god in the Joey Smith’s Doctrines and covenants not obeyed by the people in the SLC Morg...
Apostacy as far as the eye can see in Utah...
Joey Smith would hide his face for shame in his hat...
Brigham would declare they were not Smithlike...

Why BYU fans love road games.
Some days you can just TASTE the Spirits!
Yup, just like ejonsie said...Mormons aren’t Christians.
In their theology God was once a man like themselves who evolved to become God over us on this planet and they, in turn, will evolve to become Gods over worshippers on other planets.
Imagine that...dingy Harry will float over a planet where people worship Him and pray to Him!
It’s the same lie the serpent gave to Adam and Eve: “ye shall be as Gods.”
Ed
Harry Reid is a MINO (Mormon in name only).
Jesus died for me, too. I’m a Mormon.
He is sort of a slippery, slimy little fish, isn’t he?
When I was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I was baptized “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.” Full dunking. It was glorious. I am not ashamed to say that Joseph Smith was a Prophet, equal to the Prophets of the Old Testament. They mocked, persecuted, belittled, and killed the Prophets of Old - just like they mocked, persecuted, belittled and killed Joseph Smith.
One significant difference - All the OT prophets prophesied truthfully, smith has been shown to be a false prophet over and over and over again.
