Yes, it was hotter than normal (30 degrees C.) for May. It was a clear, sunny day, so the sun was beating down on the piazza. Fortunately, a nun sitting behind me and my elderly friend lent us an umbrella to use for shade.
The Holy Father put the saturno on before he left the covered platform where he sits. I guess it is easier than having someone follow him and hold an umbrella to shade him from the sun.
