Obama Approval High Among Muslims, Jews, and Catholics
Gallup ^ | May 1, 2009 | Lydia Saad

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup Poll Daily tracking during President Obama's first 100 days in office finds broad support for him among Americans affiliated with most major U.S. religions. U.S. Muslims and Jews give Obama his highest job approval ratings, at 85% and 79%, respectively. He also receives solid majority support from Roman Catholics (67%) and Protestants (58%), and more approval than disapproval from Mormons.

Obama also enjoys broad support -- 73% approval -- from the sizable group of Americans with no religious affiliation, including those calling themselves atheists or agnostics.

These findings are based on large sample sizes for each religious group contained in the combined Gallup Poll Daily tracking results from Jan. 21-April 29, 2009. This includes interviews with approximately 55,000 Protestants (defined in this study as those who identify themselves either as Protestant or with another non-Catholic Christian religion), 24,000 Catholics, 2,500 Jews, 1,600 Mormons, and 350 Muslims. (Full details of the methodology are provided at the end of this report.)

Catholics Broadly Supportive of Obama

The University of Notre Dame's recent invitation to Obama to deliver its 2009 commencement address -- and the associated decision to confer an honorary doctorate degree on him -- has sparked outrage, protests, and boycotts against the university among some Catholics and Catholic bishops. The critics of that invitation say the university's acts implicitly condone Obama's more liberal positions on abortion and embryonic stem-cell research -- issues of significant disagreement between the Roman Catholic Church and the new president. However, the controversy would seem not to resonate with rank-and-file Catholics, most of whom approve of Obama's job performance to date (and who don't necessarily concur with the church on the relevant policy issues).

Obama's job approval ratings among Catholics and Protestants have varied slightly from week to week since

Although Obama has dusted up some controversy among conservative Catholics and has stepped into the always-thorny Mideast political fray, his image thus far among Catholics seems untarnished, and his image among Jews, Muslims, and nonreligious Americans is extraordinarily positive. Protestants and Mormons are more conservative in their politics than members of other religions, and thus more moderate in their approval of Obama. But even among these groups, more approve of his job performance than disapprove.

How any Catholic worthy of the name can support him is beyond me - I wonder if the approving so-called Catholics support all his pro-death executive orders?

HMmmmmm

Rasmussen has Obama’s “strongly disapprove” percentage around 32%.

For Gallup’s numbers to make any sense, there must be a majority of Mormons in this country

How can any person of faith support King Barry.
His stand on abortion alone should disqualify support.

The Muslims I get. His world apology tour helped solidify their position in future attacks on the US, which BO wants, apparantly. The Jews and Catholics?! Makes no sense. Of course, neither did the piss ant winning the Presidency make any sense. Stupidity is the only answer.

If these numbers are true, which I highly doubt, it just proves to me the dangers of a mobocracy like the one we have. The founders gave us a republic, where only property holders can vote, for this very reason.

Some believers actually live their faith outside of the church building.

Isn't that we are supposed to do? What is brick and mortar anyway?
The church is people not a building.
Yet, I find the poll suspicious.

This is so transparently a damage-control poll. I find it hard to take as credible. Especially in light of the Notre Dame controversy.

Exactly. How can anyone observe what is happening at Notre Dame and believe any of this? And frankly, how can any of us believe virtually any of the polls that come out nowadays? You see these “results” and then you look deeper and find out they polled 21% Republicans and 57% Democrats or something. A complete joke.

Looks from that graph, that the title should be Muslims, Jews and non-religious. Catholics are in the last three when it comes to both approval and non-approval.

False headline to get Catholics, in my opinion, wouldn’t you say the same?

Look, the polls are tainted to begin with. Second, I would bet that if you break down the Catholic polling, you’ll find that the latino element accounts for most of the pro-Obama faction, given those freeloading weasels simply want to freeload even more, and want their countrymen to be granted amnesty, so they can vote for more freeloading.

So ashamed of Jews and Catholics.

These are people who self-identify as Jews and Catholics which isn't quite the same thing as being Jewish or Catholic.

Let me ask even one relatively simple question (E.g. For Jews: What is this week's Torah portion? Practicing Catholics undoubtedly could come up with questions too.) to differentiate and the acting President's approval numbers would be well below 50%.

I love the posters denying that the poll results are real. Talk about sticking your head in the sand and being unwilling to face the sad truth.

Remember when you all were crowing, for months and months leading up to the election, that you were convinced all the polls were pure fantasy and that Obama would be defeated 70-30? Get a nasty little surprise on election day?

I was not surprised. In aggregate, the polls predicted the actual results with uncanny accuracy.

People, this is Gallup, an independent polling agency. They are professionals in the science of polling. Sure polls are not perfect, but to claim that these results are outright lies just because you don’t like the results smacks of desperation.

In this frightening era for our country, above all, we need to see the truth clearly and without bias. Only then can we take the steps necessary to retake our country.

PS - The reason a random, scientific poll would poll more Democrats than Republicans is because there ARE more Democrats than Republicans.

Agreed. I am just disappointed in anyone who is a believer in God and/or Christ that would approve of someone who advocates infanticide, among other things. The Muslim numbers do not surprise me at all.

Regardless, I choose to dis-agree with you about the polls. I do not think they reflect what the MSM is saying.

I am not in denial, but I am very very angry.

We are watching the destruction of the nation at the hands of a Commie.

We are at War.

Just wait, and you shall see the results of something other than polls.
