Priest dies while performing sorcery

Ahmedabad, November 1 : A Priest of a Shiva temple in Bapunagar hanged himself to death inside the temple premises reportedly while performing a sorcery ritual in the early hours on Saturday.

B J Maharaj (40), who belonged to Uttar Pradesh (UP), was found hanging from a hook on the ceiling of the Lambeshwar Mahadev Temple, near Ajit Chowk in Bapunagar, on Saturday morning. The Bapunagar police have sent the body for post mortem and are investigating the case.

According to preliminary investigations, said the police, the victim died accidentally while performing a ritual to get expertise in black magic and sorcery.

“The victim’s sister, Sumitra, who stays in Mariumbibi Ni Chali told us that the former aspired to become a tantrik. While leaving for the temple late on Friday, Maharaj told Sumitra that he would practice sorcery that night,” said Bapunagar Inspector K P Gajipara.

But when Maharaj did not return that night, Sumitra sent her 10-year-old son to look for him in the temple. The boy returned and said that his uncle was hanging inside the temple. Sumitra rushed to the temple with some of the neighbours and found Maharaj dead. She later filed a complaint with the police.

Gajipara added: “Considering that nothing has been stolen from the temple and that the temple doors were bolted from inside, it seems to be a case of suicide. Some puja material found inside the temple and Sumitra’s statement indicate that Maharaj may have killed himself while performing some tantrik rituals. We are, however, yet to ascertain the actual reason behind the incident and investigations are on.”

No wonder I’ve never heard of this religion. There must not be many who would want to become priests.

Apparently the ritual must have involved putting a noose around one’s neck.

Give it some time and you’ll see a temple appear in your neighborhood. Perhaps the guy was doing the old rope trick.

It's hinduism, isn't it?

You're right. I should have caught that. I never knew they were into black magic and sorcery although it doesn't surprise me.

BTW-They’re building a Hindu temple right around the corner from us in the shape of a Lotus flower. The cows can sleep easier these days although we are in the modern suburbs.

They seem to be into just about everything, seeing as how they're a folk religion with an unbroken spectrum going from "high philosophy" to "simple idolatry," and that they have no concept of orthodoxy.

Fooled by the Devil. Shiva in the Hindu religion is known as The Destroyer.

Catholic exorcisms are only of danger to the possessed, not the priest.
I wonder if this guy will end up a Darwin Award nominee.

I can only understand about every third word in the above article.

This might help.

Likewise, that font of knowledge, Wikipedia, on "Tantrik":

In tantra, a tantrik is a man who is usually associated with black magic and practices of the occult. These men are known for their superstitious rituals. Tantriks are called upon to free a person who is "possessed". They are similar to "Exorcists" in the western culture.

Tantra, or more properly tantrika, is a diverse and rich spiritual tradition of the Indian sub-continent. Although in recent years, in the Western world, it has become almost exclusively associated with sex, in reality this is one aspect of what is a way of life. In India itself, tantra is now, nearly always, associated with spells and black deeds.

Sounds like this pagan priest encountered something he couldn't handle. Bad theology has consequences.

“BTW-They’re building a Hindu temple right around the corner from us in the shape of a Lotus flower.”

Are they stocking the temple with rats or with monkeys? Have the cows in your neighborhood all been declared holy and are they now roaming your street? I have never seen a country so intentionally destroyed as ours. Courtesy of the UN.

And then to think that our Christian brothers and sisters are being persecuted by Hindus in India and we do nothing or say anything about it. Perhaps, we as a nation do not deserve anyone better than an Obama.

The religion was never named. The reader’s knowledge that Hinduism is involved is assumed by the author, being from the Indian Express and all. Uttar Pradesh, if that’s what you’re thinking is the religion, is actually a province of India (I can see where it could be confusing, since the article said this guy “belonged” to Uttar Pradesh, a rather odd way of saying he came from there).

They have gods who are “benign” and other gods that need to be appeased to avoid their acknowledged evil dispositions. What we call “black magic” is part-and-parcel.

Man-made superstition. That covers *all* religions that exist. We don’t see too many “miracles” in the 20th century, do we? Or talking bushes of fire, even. Has “God” taken a hiatus? Or too many ways to disprove superstition?

That’s an artificial definition of”religion” that smacks of how the JW’s define it. Christianity is most certainly a religion. So is Judaism. Our entire heritage is replete with any number of aspects to “religion” that fit the mold perfectly. Are you a Christian? If you are, you clearly belong to a “religion.” Is your own version rank with superstition? I imagine you would say “no.” If you say you are an atheist, and thereby can say that all religions are full of superstition, you are on more internally consistent ground, yet you characterized them also as “diabolical,” implying a belief that the devil exists, which, of course is a religious concept in itself.

LOL, artificial... that’s what all religions are. Tools made up to tweak the unwashed multitudes of illiterates that formed the seed-population of every religion on earth, ever known.

So you're an atheist, then? Why don't you just say so? You have your work cut out for you on this forum, then, my friend! Why not just stick to politics? Atheists self-stereotype as professionally angry, nay-saying, persimony controversialists in just the fashion you're exhibiting now. Why put yourself through so much trouble? Just take your ball and go home.

The religion was never named....

Actually it was. "A Priest of a Shiva temple..."

I overlooked this but I should have caught the term "Shiva". It is the same as the temple being built near our house. There are literally thousand of variations of this same term but it all relates to Hinduism.

Wikipedia has this to say for Shiva: "Followers of Hinduism who focus their worship upon Shiva are called Shaivites or Shaivas (Sanskrit Śaiva). Shaivism, along with Vaiṣṇava traditions that focus on Vishnu, and Śākta traditions that focus on the goddess Devī are three of the most influential denominations in Hinduism."
