Vatican City, Sep 25, 2008 / 11:10 am (CNA).- Pope Benedict XVI made a low profile but significant move in the direction of liturgical reform by completely renewing the roster of his liturgical advisors yesterday.
A hardly noticed brief note from the Vatican's Press office announced the appointment of new consultants for the office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff. It did not mention, however, the importance of the new appointees.
The new consultants include Monsignor Nicola Bux, professor at the Theological Faculty of Puglia (Southern Italy,) and author of several books on liturgy, especially on the Eucharist. Bux recently finish a new book "Pope Benedicts Reform," printed by the Italian publishing house Piemme, scheduled to hit the shelves in December.
The list of news consultants includes Fr. Mauro Gagliardi, an expert in Dogmatic theology and professor at the Legionaries of Christ's Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum; Opus Dei Spanish priest Juan José Silvestre Valor, professor at the Pontifical University of Santa Croce in Rome; Fr. Uwe Michael Lang, C.O., an official of the Congregation for the Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and author of the book "Turning Towards the Lord" -about the importance of facing "ad orientem" during Mass; and Fr. Paul C.F. Gunter, a Benedictine professor at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant Anselmo in Rome and member of the editorial board of the forthcoming "Usus Antiquior," a quarterly journal dedicated to the Liturgy under the auspices of the Society of St. Catherine of Siena. The Society, which has an association with the English Province of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), promotes the intellectual and liturgical renewal of the Church.
Also relevant to the appointments is the fact that all former consultants, appointed when Archbishop Piero Marini led the office of Liturgical Celebrations, have been dismissed by not renewing their appointments.
The news gets better all the time.
Amen to that!
Wonderful!
Amen
This is the one thing that steams me off the most about the New Mass, along with The Host being handled inappropriately, and the hugs and handshakes and arm waving (can't forget those). I've got to think that the inappropriate handling of The Host is among most grievous errors, however.
I’m trusting your opinion on this.
Sweep out the cushy Catholics.
So basically the libs and their changes are getting replaced?
There are two people that give me hope: Pope Benedict XVI and Sarah Palin!
I don’t know much about the who’s who of Vatican politics but I take it that the presence of an Opus Dei priest and the absences of anyone from the SJ or other leftist orders is a good thing.
Benedictine ping
You are absolutely right. My bi-ritual pastor says the NO Mass each week, at a local Catholic hospital. He was shocked at the way RCs receive the Eucharist during Mass and even more so at the EMHCs that distribute communion to the bed ridden. Now he makes an annoucement at the beginning of Mass, advising ALL present that communion will ONLY be distributed by HIM and ONLY on the tongue. He has also called the EMHCs to task. Lol .... he's made a few enemies in the process ... I love this priest :-).
BUMPity BUMP BUMP
**The Host being handled inappropriately,**
Our priest said just two weeks ago or so, that he thought we were headed back to Communion on the tongue only.
That’s really good to hear! I hope it happens in time for our older girl’s First Communion this year. If not, she’ll be off to a Latin Mass that afternoon anyway! (you can attend Mass twice in one day, right?)
As long as you don’t receive twice.
“As long as you dont receive twice.”
Some priests now hold that you can receive twice.
Steve, when my boys were making their First Holy Communions, I had to go to the mat over the Communion in the hand issue.
I asked my son if he had been taught the proper method for receiving on the tongue and was told by his teacher that “that’s not allowed anymore.”
So I went to the teacher, who kicked me up to the principal, who kicked me up to the DRE, who kicked me up to the pastor.
Father didn’t want the children learning how to receive “that way” because it doesn’t show the proper “community.” I let him know that I wasn’t just some ignorant housewife who was unaware of the dictates from Rome — that I would go over his head if necessary but that Billy WOULD learn to receive on the tongue and furthermore he and the other children WOULD be told that it is perfectly OK to do so, even if I had to teach him that myself.
He backed down.
You should talk to the DRE or the pastor about this. There is no reason why your daughter should not be taught this very reverent method of receiving the Holy Eucharist.
Regards,
PS: The boys still go to Catholic school, but we now exclusively attend the TLM. (Deo Gratias!)
Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of Can. 921, §2.
Can. 921 §1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.
§2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.
§3. While the danger of death lasts, it is recommended that holy communion be administered often, but on separate days.
Sometimes ya gotta keep 'em on the straight and narrow.
In Father's defense, he probably gets all kind of flak from the hippy-dippy "Spirit of VCII" types (especially the ladies of a certain age). And since they don't seem to have a life other than trying to boss parish functions, I'm sure it seems easier just to go along to shut them up.
Of course, if Father gets grief from the other direction then he'll do the right thing, since he's going to get grief in any event!
Oh, AAM, I wish that were true. But Father IS one of the hippy-dippies. (Ordained in 1973)
He and I have a fairly long history of knocking heads and it all started when after Mass one day, he said to me, “And who do you think you are, Jackie Kennedy?” (Because I was wearing a pink linen dress and a veil. My husband was in a jacket and tie and the boys were in dress shorts, shirts and ties and black shoes. In other words, we were properly dressed for Mass on a summer morning.) I had removed my veil immediately upon exiting the church. It wasn’t like I was going out to brunch wearing it...
I replied, “First of all, Father, I wouldn’t have voted for Jack Kennedy if he was the last man on earth, and secondly...I look WAY better in pink than Jackie did.”
It’s been down hill from there, unfortunately. I do try to be civil, and I have told the boys that they are never EVER to smart mouth him or get into a liturgical argument of any kind. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, but we really really don’t see eye to eye on much. He IS a staunch advocate for the unborn and frequently writes about the issue in the church bulletin. We can agree on that, at least.
Regards,
Holy Communion More Than Once a Day:
A person who has already received the Eucharist may receive it (only) once again on the same day only during a Eucharistic celebration in which the person participates. A person in danger of death who has already received the Eucharist once or twice is urged to receive Communion again as Viaticum. Pope John Paul approved this decision, in accord with Canon 917, and ordered it published July 11, 1984.
Thank you. Guess we will have to wait a week for the next Tridentine Mass.
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
- St. Alphonsus Liguori
I usually dress down (cotton sleeveless dress or light shirt and slacks) because our choir robes are wool/poly and hot as a sauna (not to mention that the choir loft is a sauna itself). When we're not singing I don't generally wear a veil -- I'd be the only person in our congregation in a veil -- but I always wear a hair ornament or small hat with the intention of covering my head. I do have a small chapel cap from my High Church Episcopalian days, plus a couple of nice Spanish mantillas if we go over to the Latin Mass parish.
‘73 graduate here also. Another 38 years to go to get to my mom’s age (It’s always been like that somehow :) )
Yep, Mama somehow manages to stay 30 years ahead of me . . . although you’d never know it, since she’s still a modern dancer and choreographer and has taken up painting in her spare time . . . .
