If you are a parent who struggles with what kind of bible to purchase for your children then you and I have a lot in common. For a few months I have been debating what kind of bible to purchase for our seven year old daughter Hannah.
I cannot recommend to you enough the ESV Children's Bible. Spanning the ages of elementary to junior high, this is unlike many children's bibles that you see on the market today. Absent are the many cheesy and shallow applications of biblical truth to a child's life. Present is a strong gospel presentation at the end of the bible with a strong adherence to the doctrines of grace along with some good helps with a child's progressive sanctification.
You will appreciate the fact that the editors of this children's bible have avoided the use of shallow man-centered theology and emphasize the sovereignty of God along the person and work of Jesus Christ. My prayer is that God uses this to grow our daughter into His likeness for His glory.
The ESV is a very good English Bible. It’s a formal equivalence version; trustworthy and easy to read.
Indeed.
I am intrigued by the Children’s version and just may buy one.
Thanks that is good to know. I purchase children and youth bibles in quantity every year. I will have a look at these.
John Piper a favorite author of mine often says how much he likes the ESV and why. I have the ESV in my E-sword program.
Our church recently changed over to the ESV from the NIV. I like it.
Oh, and Gamecock? Don’t forget the grandparents who can buy these for their grandkids. I plan on getting one for my little Calvin, now 3 1/2.
You have one of these, too?
John Piper (of whom whom I do not personally know) is on the ESV (Crossway) payroll, FYI
You are welcome for this information my friend.
The guy on the right looks a little familiar....
Has anyone ever told you that you look like Dick Cheney?
I like the ESV. It's a great translation. Lot's of cross references and footnotes available on the Bible Gateway.

Again, the ESV is a good translation. However, as a person who suffers from “BAS” (Bible acquisition syndrome), I generally stay away from it unless I'm comparing various translations on a particular passage.
For a modern translation that uses NA/UBS New Testament text, it is hard to beat the NASB 95. All of the readability complaints of the NASB were corrected in the 95 update.
Me personally, thanks for asking, I prefer the NKJV which used the TR manuscripts but puts NA/UBS (called MT text) in the margin notes.
But hay, freedom of religion, so they say.
By the way, the NIV (not to be confused with the TNIV) is actually less of a dynamic equivalence translation than what the marketing folks of the compeditors would have us believe. One the other hand, the ESV is not as formal as you may think. The Holman Christian Standard is very similar to the ESV.

We have this Bible and my children love it. Our church last year changed from KJV to ESV. And for me it was strange because of growing up in a KJV only church. But alot of churches in the Upstate area are going to the the ESV.
I'm not a particular fan of the ESV. It's a bit too 'gender-neutralized' for my tastes. It does seem to be highly popular with the moderates in the PCA.
Now I have this:
ESV eh? Guess I’ll have to go check it out...Right now I typically stick to NKJV and NAS, but I’m always up for getting another reliable version.
Please advise a couple specifics that cause you concern, regarding the ESV being a bit too “gender-neutral”. This is a major bone of contention - rightly so - with the TNIV.
Here’s a great resource on this issue of Biblical understanding of the sexes: http://www.cbmw.org/
I use the NKJV because you can get it in large print! Old eyes, you know. I’ve found it to be more than sufficient for my needs.
First, let me say that it is not even close to being in the same class as the evil TNIV.
It's been a couple of years since I read the ESV from cover to cover, so I'd have to dig out my copy and look through it again. It's my recollection that the passages that troubled me were in the OT. I compared them to several other translations that I use more frequently, and looked at the usage in Strong's, and I wasn't convinced that the traditional readings weren't good.
But, off the top of my head, I'm not able to cite you to particular verses this evening.
Thanks for your reply. I’ve only read a bit of the ESV - and lots of commentary about it. If you recall or come across any examples, I would like to be informed.
I agree with your about the TNIV - work of Satan.
