Lightning Bolts appear above volcano in Chile + Etna volcano rumbles back to life in Sicily
Yahoo News and AFP ^ | May 10, 2008

Lightning bolts appear above and around the Chaiten volcano as seen from Chana, some 30 kms (19 miles) north of the volcano, as it began its first eruption in thousands of years, in southern Chile May 2, 2008. Cases of electrical storms breaking out directly above erupting volcanos are well documented, although scientists differ on what causes them. Picture taken May 2, 2008.

The Etna volcano in Sicily rumbled back to life on Tuesday with a "seismic event" followed by a burst of ash, volcanologists said three days after minor eruptions shook the cone.

A "seismic event provoking a strong explosion was recorded Tuesday at 0424 GMT (6:42 am local) in parts of the peak of the volcano," the National Geophysics and Vulcanology Institute in Sicily's Catania region said in a statement.

The explosion on Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano at 3,295 metres (10,810 feet), was followed by a rain of ash on the southeast crater, "where significant gas emissions are occurring," the statement said.

The institute dispatched experts on Tuesday to the site, but "the phenomenon currently represents no danger to people or property," it said.

Saturday's eruption, accompanied by streams of lava, was also at the volcano's southeast crater.

The last eruption of Mount Etna was in November 2007, two months after another eruption forced a temporary closure of nearby Catania airport due to flowing lava and clouds of ash.

The last major eruption was in 2001.

Seismic events are popping up around the planet. Japan, Greece, England, China, San Diego, Reno, Aleutians, Chile. Stand by.

Seismic events are popping up around the planet.

I realize there are thousands of earthquakes each day; do you see a particular pattern emerging with this particular string of quakes?

Apparently the last 40 years or so have been quiet in regards to big geologic events. It seems to be returning to normal.

The volcano is exposing or changing an effective electrical charge in the earth, increasing the electric field to the point where it exceeds the dielectric strength of air. This results in the air dielectric breaking down and dischaging the giant “capacitor” in a lightning bolt. I don’t see it as a great mystery, given that magnetic materials are moving in a magnetic field creating electric currents and charges. Any electrical engineers or meteorologists want to chime in?

A pattern of sorts. Maybe ten mag 5 and bigger events in the past ten days beginning with the Chilean volcano, and they are on a great circle around the planet. No really big ones as yet.

Yesterday a squirrel hopped up to within a foot of the dog and they just looked curiously at each other. This is highly unusual behavior for both of them.

It’s only with the development of satellite media over the past half-century that we now pretty much know what’s going on anywhere in the world. I’ll bet there have been some honkin’ huge geological events, even in the past century, no one who wasn’t there will ever know about.

We're getting our share...

Of course, I think a lot of the earthquakes are being damped by the drooping spirits of all the Mariner's fans. After all, earthquakes happen underground, and are now joined by by the Mariner's season record...
