Vatican frustration over what it views as the failure of many U.S. Catholic colleges to adhere to church teachings, school leaders are intently watching for a rebuke from Pope Benedict XVI during his Washington visit next month.
The pope requested the meeting with more than 200 top Catholic school officials from across the country. The gathering will come amid debate over teachings and campus activities that bishops have slammed as violating Catholic doctrine: a rally by pro-abortion rights Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton at St. Mary's University in San Antonio; a Georgetown University theologian's questioning whether Jesus offers the only road to salvation; and a performance of "The Vagina Monologues" at the University of Notre Dame.
This will be the first papal address in the United States on Catholic education in more than 20 years, and some Vatican watchers predict that it will be the most enduring part of Benedict's visit. Before becoming pope, Benedict was known as "the enforcer" of church orthodoxy, and since taking office, he has said Catholic education must bow to Catholic "truth" and the "rule of life." Such comments have some educators keyed up.
"With people expecting his address on these issues, hopes and concerns are beginning to resurface," said Mathew Schmalz, a religious studies professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, who has researched and lectured about Catholic identity in higher education.
The Rev. Timothy Broglio, archbishop of the U.S. military services, who served in Rome for a dozen years, said Benedict's speech will be direct. "It'll be very clear and distinct ideas," Broglio said. ". . . There will be no mistaking what he wants to say."

But .... will they listen?
Some will ... most won’t.
The enemy infiltrators in our midst didn’t like JPII ... but that was nothing compared to the vicious, bilious, visceral vitriolic hatred some of them bear for our beloved B16. No matter ... the Master was hated, why should the Servant expect otherwise?
” There will be no mistaking what he wants to say.”
Read the Regensburg lecture with commentary and am now reading “On the Way to Jesus Christ.”
Where JPII had a more mystic style, Benedict’s writing is dense and absolutely crystal clear. He brings all his vast knowledge to the fore to bring our Faith in Jesus Christ more alive.
We are so blessed that the Holy Spirit raised this man from infancy to be our Benedict.
Many prayers for his health, long life and protection. Let nothing assail him. Let him be Peter and reach the world with the message of Jesus.
He has to rebuke the liberation theology wing of the Church where most of this liberalism has spawned from. Fauxbama, Rev. Jeremiah “Joseph Goebbels” Wright and Father Michael “Martin Bormann” Phleger are prime examples of this trend. I pray for his sucess.
"What it views as the failure . . ."???? LOL -- well, words fail me!
When was the last time they got anything right?
I hope he is successful. What possible action could he take against the offenders?
Oh, good, you found the story!
I really would like some discipline enforced. The Vagina Monologues at Notre Dame was way out of line.
In the case of schools run by religious orders, control is through the international heads of the orders. In the case of schools controlled by the local clergy control is through the local bishop or archbishop. If controlled by lay boards the Pope can influence the board members through persuation, with the penalty of removing recognition of the school as a Catholic institution as a last resort.
**Catholic College Leaders Expect Pope to Deliver Stern Message**
I am sure this statement does not surprise any of us here on FR.
Any thoughts form anyone?
**Many prayers for his health, long life and protection. Let nothing assail him. Let him be Peter and reach the world with the message of Jesus.**
Amen and Amen!
That would just be a beginning.
Priests could be warned.
Bishops could be asked to step down.
Laity will be asked to be more reverent and “obedient” to the church.
Emphasis might be put on a culture of life, and thus, ask Catholics to follow it rather than practice contraception.
As I said, just a beginning.
Oh, yes, and my favorite.............Revise the NAB and the ICEL language unto it.
Along with asking bishops, priests, etc. to get rid of all abuses in the Mass — such as holding hands during the Our Father or using the ORANS position that is for the priest only.
