Resurrection of Jesus the Messiah

Jesus Christ resurrected on Eastern Sunday, the third day after his death and burial. This is a plain fact stated very clearly in the four Gospels. He is the only founder of a great religion who resurrected, as the Holy Scriptures testify, and as all the Christians believe. Mohamed and Buddha and Confucius did not resurrect, as their Holy Scriptures testify, and as their faithful believe… and, of course, Abraham and Moses did not resurrect, nor Lao-Tze, nor any Hindu founder, nor Zoroaster, nor Guru Nanak…

The last chapter of each Gospel tell the story of the resurrection of Jesus and his apparitions, and the Gospel of John dedicates the last two chapters to it … Probably, the most important chapters in the whole Bible are Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 28, Blessed Apostle Saint Mark 16, Blessed Apostle Saint Luke 24, and Blessed Apostle Saint John 20 and 21, because they tell the most important event in human history, the Resurrection of Jesus the Messiah from the dead, capstone of the whole Bible.

In the Book of Acts, the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead was the one unvarying refrain of the Apostles who presented themselves over and over as the witnesses of the Resurrection of Christ ( Acts 2:24,31,32, 3:15,4:2,10, 33, 5:30, 9:3-6, 10:40, 13:30-37, 17:3,18,31, 22:6-12, 24:15,21, 26:8,23). 1 Corinthians 15, is a great chapter on the Resurrection of Christ.

Out of the Bible, the best prove of the Resurrection of Jesus is each one of the millions of Christians, in whom Jesus dwells… alive!… because he resurrected!… and the Resurrection of Jesus is unhesitatingly one of the best established facts in the history of mankind... the Annals of the Roman Emperors, specially Tiberius, record the existence of a sect of the so called Christians, who claimed to be the followers of Jesus the Messiah crucified, and the witnesses of his Resurrection, with thousands of them dying martyrs for their faith.

It is curious and important the fact that his disciples were not expecting it, though Jesus had repeatedly and plainly told them he would rise on the third day after his death ( Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 16:21, 17:9,23, 20:19, 26:32, 27:763, Blessed Apostle Saint Mark 8:31, 9:31, Blessed Apostle Saint 18:33, 24:7 )… they may have taken his words as a symbolism or a parable, but the fact is that they were totally unprepared to even think in his resurrection:

Mary Magdalene took Jesus at first for the gardener, and when she and the woman reported to the Eleven and to the rest that Jesus had risen, they thought of it as "an idle tale", as "pure nonsense", and they did not believed them ( Blessed Apostle Saint Luke 24:9-11, Blessed Apostle Saint Mark 16:9-11). When the Two from Emmaus told the Eleven that Jesus had appeared to them, "they did not believe them" (Mk.16:13)…. and even when Jesus appeared to them on Easter, they thought he was a ghost, so he invited them to look closely to his hands, feet and side, and to "handle" him, end even more, Jesus had to ask for food and eat it before them! ( Blessed Apostle Saint Luke 24:36-43, Blessed Apostle Saint John 20:20 ).

The Holy Tridentine Roman Rite Mass

The Tridentine Mass takes its name from the Council of Trent ( 1545-63 ), under the watchful eye of Pope Saint Pius V. The "Tridentine Rite" is, therefore, more properly called the Ancient or Traditional Roman Rite. The last edition of its missal was published in 1962.

The traditional Roman Rite differs from the new rite -- the 1969 Novus Ordo. This “new Mass” omits about 70 percent of the traditional Mass prayers. Most consider the traditional Latin Mass to be much more formal, more dignified.

It’s emphasis is on the sacrifice of Jesus and the recognition of the “true presence” of Jesus—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity—in the Holy Eucharist. The entire Mass focuses on the Consecration of the Body and Blood and on reception of Christ in Holy Communion. This is represented in the photograph below.

The priest and the faithful face forward to the altar...and to God. The Holy Traditional Tridentine Roman Rite Latin Mass is the manner in which Catholics worshiped The One True God for well over 1,000 years. For those over the age of 40, it is the Mass of their youth. For those too young to remember incense filled churches, Gregorian chant, and the reverent silence at Mass, the Tridentine rite offers a return to a profound manner of worship.

THE ATHANASIAN CREED

The Athanasian Creed, attributed to Saint Athanasius, also know as the Quicumque vult, was formerly recited at the office of Prime on Sundays and Trinity Sunday is the time when we renew our commitment to our Faith and the dogma Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus - "Outside the Church There is No Salvation." The Athanasian Creed is one of the four authoritative Creeds of Holy Mother Church, and it is not something that is an opinion but what every Roman Catholic must believe.

Whosoever wishes to be saved must, above all, keep the Catholic Faith. For unless a person keeps this Faith whole and entire, he will undoubtedly be lost forever. This is what the Catholic Faith teaches: we worship one God in the Trinity and the Trinity in unity. Neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, another of the Holy Spirit. But the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit have one divinity, equal glory, and coeternal majesty. What the Father is, the Son is, and the Holy Spirit is. The Father is uncreated, the Son is uncreated, and the Holy Spirit is uncreated. The Father is boundless, the Son is boundless, and the Holy Spirit is boundless. The Father is eternal, the Son is eternal, and the Holy Spirit is eternal. Nevertheless, there are not three eternal beings, but one eternal being. So there are not three uncreated beings, nor three boundless beings, but one uncreated being and one boundless being. Likewise, the Father is omnipotent, the Son is omnipotent, the Holy Spirit is omnipotent. Yet there are not three omnipotent beings, but one omnipotent being. Thus the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. However, there are not three gods, but one God. The Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord. However, there as not three lords, but one Lord. For as we are obliged by Christian truth to acknowledge every Person singly to be God and Lord, so too are we forbidden by the Catholic religion to say that there are three Gods or Lords. The Father was not made, nor created, nor generated by anyone. The Son is not made, nor created, but begotten by the Father alone. The Holy Spirit is not made, nor created, nor generated, but proceeds from the Father and the Son. There is, then, one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three sons; one Holy Spirit, not three holy spirits. In this Trinity, there is nothing before or after, nothing greater or less. The entire three Persons are co-eternal and co-equal with one another. So that in all things, as is has been said above, the Unity is to be worshipped in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity. He, therefore, who wishes to be saved, must believe thus about the Trinity. It is also necessary for eternal salvation that he believes steadfastly in the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thus the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is both God and man. As God, He was begotten of the substance of the Father before time; as man, He was born in time of the substance of His Mother. He is perfect God; and He is perfect man, with a rational soul and human flesh. He is equal to the Father in His divinity, but inferior to the Father in His humanity. Although He is God and man, He is not two, but one Christ. And He is one, not because His divinity was changed into flesh, but because His humanity was assumed unto God. He is one, not by a mingling of substances, but by unity of person. As a rational soul and flesh are one man: so God and man are one Christ. He died for our salvation, descended into hell, and rose from the dead on the third day. He ascended into Heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. At His coming, all men are to arise with their own bodies; and they are to give an account of their own deeds. Those who have done good deeds will go into eternal life; those who have done evil will go into the everlasting fire. This is the Catholic Faith. Everyone must believe it, firmly and steadfastly; otherwise He cannot be saved. Amen.

Atmosphere of Reverent Worship :
Peaceful, otherworldly atmosphere. Emphasis on individual 'lifting his heart & mind to God.' The faithful direct their prayer and attention to God, not each other."

Profound Reverence for His Real Presence :
Sixteen genuflections. The hands of the priest alone touch the consecrated host. Communion given only on tongue.

Fidelity to Catholic Doctrine :
Over the course of a year, all facets of Roman Rite Catholicism are presented.

Antiquity :
Bulk of Sunday prayers & their arrangement goes back at least to 300s and 400s AD. Canon essentially the same since Blessed Saint Ambrose ( 397 Anno Dómini ).

Stability :
Everything regulated by precise tradition to protect the purity of worship and doctrine.

Priest is Sacrificer:
Priest faces tabernacle, cross and altar ( symbolically toward God ). Priest performs all the actions & recites all the prayers of the Mass.

Modern Mass at your parish

Social, Classroom, Entertainment Atmosphere :
Constant standing, sitting, amplified noise; atmosphere like a public meeting. Emphasis on 'instruction.' Socializing in church before & after service, and handshaking during.

Indifference, Irreverence towards Real Presence :
Only three genuflections required. Lay men & women distribute communion. Communion given in hand - a practice protestants introduced to deny Christ's Real Presence.

Systematic Omission of Catholic Doctrines :
New and or 'revised' prayers systematically omit all references to hell; judgment; punishment for sin; merits of the Saints; the One True Church; the souls of the departed; and heavenly miracles.

Novelty :
Traditional Sunday prayers omitted, or stripped of doctrines, and 'rearranged' from the 1960s to this day. Only 17% of old prayers remain. Chunks of ancient Canon are now 'optional'. The words of consecration, Christ's own words "For you and for many" have been changed. Three substitute 'Canons' invented & introduced in 1960s, with more invented later.

Constant Change :
Options, options and more options. Individual priests & parish liturgy committees get to pick, drop or invent texts to push whatever they think the faithful should believe.

Priest is "President", Actor :
Priest faces people instead of symbolically "toward God." Priest sits off to side. His functions given away to lay men and women whose hands have not been consecrated to hold the precious Body of Christ Jesus, nor have they been given the Holy Sacrament of Holy Orders to perform priestly duties.

When Christ, your life, shall appear ~~ Colossians 3:4

From the tomb Christ emerged visibly victorious over death and sin. The Cross had been conquered. From the darkness, the Light shone forth more radiant than ever, filling hearts and souls with a hope and a grace that transcends all understanding, especially that of a world intent on persecuting those who follow the One Whom they persecuted and could not silence. As the light grows dimmer by the year, the month, the day, the hour, the wick of Faith grows thinner and thinner; and yet a wisp of hope still flickers, casting a spark to the soul, carried on the flint of the Paschal Mystery that will, in time - as promised - reignite hearts to love and follow their Redeemer through the tenebrae of temporal temerity to the heights of heavenly peace of mind and soul.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

"Of all the seasons of the liturgical year Eastertide is by far the richest in mystery. We might even say that Easter is the summit of the Mystery of the sacred Liturgy. The Christian who is happy enough to enter, with his whole mind and heart, into the knowledge and love of the Paschal Mystery, has reached the very center of the supernatural life" ( Dom Prosper Gueranger, The Liturgical Year ).

The Paschal Mystery is entered by means of a death - the death of Jesus Christ upon the Cross. Christ has struggled with death and has emerged victorious, as Isaias prophesied: "He shall cast death down headlong for ever. And this Lord God shall wipe away tears from every face. And the reproach of his people he shall take away from off the whole earth. For the Lord hath spoken it" ( Isaias 25:8 ).

"After the blows and the mockery," says Saint Augustine, "after the gall and the drink of vinegar, after the agony and the wounds of the cross, the new Body, returning more beautiful than before, has risen again from its grave; the latent life returning from its setting, and the salvation that was laid up for us in His death now appears" ( Saint Augustine, Sermon on the Resurrection ).

Blessed Apostle Saint Paul testifies: "But as it is, Christ has risen from the dead, the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, by a Man also comes resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made to live. But each in his own turn. Christ as first-fruits, then they who are Christ's, who have believed, at His coming" ( 1 Corinthians 15:22,23 ).

In Romans, Blessed Apostle Saint Paul explains: "Do you not know that all we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? For we were buried with Him by means of baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ has arisen from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we may also walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall be so in the likeness of His resurrection also. For we know that our old self has been crucified with Him, in order that the body of sin may be destroyed, that we may no longer be slaves of sin…" ( Romans 6:3-7 ).

Those who have died with Christ in Baptism and have persevered in His grace understand the Paschal Mystery. They are no longer OF this world, although they are still IN this world. And because they are not of this world, they are hated by those who belong to the world, just as Christ Himself was hated by the world. "If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you," said Our Lord. During Holy Week and Easter, the world cannot hide its hatred for the Risen Christ.

The Catholic News Agency reports that on Palm Sunday Archbishop Hector Aguer of La Plata, Argentina, spoke of a wave of hatred against Jesus Christ that is sweeping over the world. This shows itself not in isolated incidents but through a series of simultaneous events that bear the marks of a conspiracy.

The archbishop mentioned several examples of attacks on Christianity: a famous rapper appears in a recent issue of Rolling Stone magazine wearing a crown of thorns; a Christmas movie shows Jesus and Santa Claus in a fist fight; obscene cartoons about Jesus Christ appear in a French newspaper; a popular brand of jeans displays a logo depicting a skull with an inverted cross, which the designer admits was intended as a protest against Christianity.

Archbishop Aguer also referred to the "infamous fables of 'The Da Vinci Code,' which will gain new strength with the upcoming release of the film," and the "Gospel of Judas," a Gnostic writing refuted by Saint Irenaeus in the year 180 AD.

The Archbishop also noted "the widespread condemnation and rejection of recently published cartoons depicting Mohammed, as well as the rapid activation of democratic mechanisms condemning discrimination and infringement upon religious freedom whenever there is the slightest attack against the Jewish community," and added that "the apathy, the leniency, the suspicious silence in response to attacks on the Christian faith stands out. It seems that Christianity, and specifically Catholicism, can be attacked with impunity." He exhorted Christians to "offer serene and cordial witness to the truth, which does not exclude when necessary a noble firmness in demanding that the sacred treasure of catholicity be respected in accord with decency, justice and the law" ( catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=6469 ).

But we who have been united with Christ in the likeness of His death do not fear the persecutions of the world, which can never destroy our Easter joy. The Exsultet, sung at the Easter Vigil by the Deacon to the Risen Christ, represented by the Paschal Candle, is a beautiful expression of the joy that must be ours:

"Let the angelic choirs of Heaven now rejoice; let the divine mysteries be celebrated with joy; and let the trumpet of salvation resound for the victory of so great a King. Let the earth also rejoice, illumined with such resplendent rays; and enlightened with the brightness of the eternal King. Let it feel that the darkness of the whole world is dispersed…

"We beseech Thee, therefore, O Lord, that this candle, consecrated in honor of Thy name, may continue to burn to dissipate the darkness of this night. And being accepted as a sweet savor, may it be mixed with the lights of Heaven. May the morning star find its flame alive; that star which knows no setting, that star which returning from hell, shone serenely upon mankind."


"Therefore, if you have risen with Christ," says Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, "seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Mind the things that are above, not the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, your life, shall appear, then you too will appear with Him in glory" ( Colossians 3:1-4 ).

Saint Benedict of Campagna

Also known as Benedict the Hermit

Benedictine hermit in the Campagna region of Italy. Captured by Totila the Goth he was thrown in a fire to die; he stayed in the flames until the next day when he miraculously emerged unharmed.

Died 361. Saint Domitius was a Phrygian who was martyred by Julian the Apostate, probably at Caesarea in Palestine. It is possible that he is the unnamed martyred in the acta of Saint Basil of Ancrya. He publicly attacked the public entertainments in the circus, which were dedicated to the heathen gods.

Easter (2008)

Feast commemorating Christ's Resurrection from the dead. After the introduction of Christianity among Germanic nations the name Easter, denoting spring, was retained to designate the festival of the Resurrection. With other nations the term commonly used is the Greco-Latin word pascha, derived from the Hebrew pasch (passover). In this way, the Christian feast is linked with the ancient Hebrew festival of the Passover, not arbitrarily, since the Death and Resurrection of Christ coincided with a particular Jewish Pasch, and because in the designs of God there was a connection between the two incidents. Because of the fact which the feast commemorates, the Church has ever regarded Easter as the greatest of her festivals, and from Apostolic times, has assigned to it the central place in her liturgical year. All the movable feasts, from that of the Prayer of Jesus in the Garden (Tuesday after Septuagesima) to the feast of the Sacred Heart (Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi), as also the order of Sundays from Septuagesima to the last Sunday after Pentecost, are made to depend upon the Easter date. Its celebration is preceded by 40 days of prayer and fasting and followed till Trinity Sunday by some 50 days of festivity. The joyous antiphon of the Vidi Aquam takes the place of the Asperges before High Mass, and the exultant Alleluia is constantly repeated in the Mass itself and in the Divine Office. Up to the 12th century, every day within the Easter octave (the eight days immediately following the feast) was a holy day of obligation.

Saint Ethelwald of Farne

Also known as Ethelwald the Hermit and Oidilwald the Hermit.

Died 699. In 687, Saint Ethelwald, a holy priest-monk of Ripon Monastery, succeeded Saint Cuthbert as the hermit on the lonely island of Farne. The Venerable Bede relates the story of a miracle wrought by Ethelwald: His prayers abated a severe wind storm, which had threatened Guthrid and two other visiting monks from Lindisfarne with shipwreck. Upon Ethelwald's death, his body was translated to Lindisfarne and laid next to those of Saints Cuthbert and Edbert. Later his relics were carried from place to place with those of Cuthbert until they were settled in Durham cathedral. Many miracles were attributed by Florence of Worcester to the intercession of Saint Ethelwald.

Saint Felix and Companions

5th century. This group of 21 martyrs may have suffered in the same Vandal persecution as Saint Victorian and Companions. All that is certain is that they died in Africa.

Saint Felix of Monte Cassino

Died c. 1000. Saint Felix was a Benedictine who lived his life in one of the daughter houses of Monte Cassino. Many miracles were recorded at his tomb. For this reason his remains were raised for veneration by the bishop of Chieti, Italy .

Saint Gwinear

Also known as Fingar, Guigner, and Gwinnear.

Died 460. This saint's vita was not written by Anselm, probably a Cornish canon, until about eight centuries after his death. There is evidence that the basics of the story are true. When Saint Patrick was evangelizing Ireland, he came to the court of King Clito and was treated with scorn. But the king's son Gwinear was more courteous than his father. Though not yet a Christian, he recognized Patrick's piety and rose to his feet to offer the saint his own seat.

Later, as he was hunting and at the same time meditating on Christianity, he was converted. Gwinear let his horse go free and began to live as a hermit. After King Clito's death, the saint returned home, but not to assume the throne. Instead he took 770 men and women (including his converted sister Piala) to spread the Christian faith in Wales and Brittany. At first they landed at the mouth of the Hayle River.

Among the celebrated miracles alleged to have been performed by the saint, one--at Puvigner in Brittany--indicates his reputation for loving animals. Short of water the saint struck the ground and created not one fountain but three: one for himself, the other two for his dog and his horse.

The saint and many of his followers died as martyrs. The Cornish tyrant Teudar had long hated the Christians. He kept a lake filled with reptiles in amongst which he threw those he disliked. It is said that Teudar came upon a band of Gwinear's Christian friends "from behind" and killed them.

Later Gwinear and some companions came across their bodies. The saint knew his own martyrdom could not be far off. "Here brethren is the place of our rest," he told his companions. "Here God has appointed that we should cease from our labors. Come therefore and let us gladly sacrifice our lives for him. Let us not fear them that kill the body. Rather let us fear him who has power to cast both body and soul into hell."

Shortly afterwards the saint was caught by Teudar and beheaded at Hayle near Penzance. A basilica was built in later years over his grave. And the Cornish village of Gwinear bears his name to this day. He is also still venerated in Pluvigner (diocese of Vannes), Brittany, as Saint Guigner, where his legend has adapted to local conditions. At Pluvigner, there is a stained glass window of Gwinear hunting a stag with a cross between its antlers (reminiscent of Saint Eustace) and a well near the church to which processions go on the day of Pardon.

Some of Gwinear's company escaped and gave their names to churches from Saint Ives to Porthleven. While there is no reliable evidence that Gwinear and his companions were Irish or missionaries nor that they were massacred by a tyrant, the historical record suggests that he came from Wales with another local saint, Meriadoc, evangelized the district of Comborne and Gwinnear (Cornwall), and went to Brittany.

Saint Joseph Oriel

Also known as José Orioli, Thaumaturgus of Barcelona, and Wonder Worker of Barcelona.

Born in Barcelona, Spain, on November 23, 1650; died there on March 23, 1702; beatified by Pope Pius VII on May 15, 1896; canonized in 1909. Father Joseph Oriol is remembered for the heroism of his virtues, for the example he proposes to Christians, and for the singular favors God accorded him.

Joseph is a saint among thousands of saints; but, for more than three centuries, history and legend together have justified the cognomen his parishioners gave him, even before he died: "wonder- worker of Barcelona." A saint among thousands of saints; but, for about three centuries, history and legend have emphasized the healings, the prophecies, the miracles of all kinds of which Joseph Oriol was the instrument.

Joseph Oriol was born of a poor family. His good conduct, his particular devotion to the Blessed Sacrament persuaded his parish priest to prepare him for the priesthood. He earned a doctorate in theology. In 1675, he was ordained and soon Innocent XI granted him a benefice at Santa Maria del Pino in his native city. In spite of his attempts and temptations, Joseph Oriol never left his parish.

Although he hoped to evangelize the infidels, God showed him that he had another vocation. On his way to Rome, Father Joseph fell ill and experienced a vision that outlined his new mission: He was to reinvigorate the faith of lukewarm hearts in Barcelona. Thus, Joseph Oriol instructed children, evangelized soldiers, and prayed and urged others to pray for the living and the dead.

He wore a hair-shirt, lived only on bread and water for 26 years, and used the discipline on himself. Nevertheless, he is not remembered for his austerity, but rather for his faith, hope, and love of God and neighbor. He epitomized the exercise of these virtues to such a high degree of perfection that the Devil was worried, persecuted him and even left his imprint on his flesh. But only on the flesh. Joseph Oriol remained firm on the path of justice and God manifested his Power and favors through his servant with extraordinary gifts. Death finally ended his life on the date he had announced.

Others would prefer, perhaps, that for the above conventional picture we substitute the one of the wonder-worker, the image of a veritable "medium," worthy heir of the charlatans of paganism, worthy rival of the sorcerers of fetishism, a conjurer as well as a man contemptuous of natural laws.

But that kind of picture does not deal with holiness. Holiness takes hold of man and utilizes him. It takes hold of the conscious and the unconscious, it takes hold of the miracle-man who, without holiness, would be less than a man, the inverted reflection of a saint.

Saint Julian

The Roman Martyrology calls Julian a confessor, but it appears that he was also a martyr.

Saint Liberat and Companions

Died 484. Saint Liberat, who was a physician, his wife, and children were exiled by the Vandals under Hunneric. When they had been arrested, their infant children were taken from them. His wife stemmed his tears by saying: "Think no more of them, Jesus Christ himself will take care of them, and protect their souls." While in prison she was told by the heretics that her husband had conformed. For this reason, when she met him at their trial, scolded him in open court for having abandoned God. He told her that their tormentors had lied in an attempt to persuade her to do likewise. Twelve young children, when dragged away by the persecutors, held their companions by the knees till they were torn away by violence. They were beaten and scourged daily for a long time; yet by God's grace every one of them persevered until they were allowed to escape into exile

Saint Maidoc of Fiddown

5th century. Saint Maidoc, the Irish abbot of Fiddown in Kilkenny, was very highly esteemed.


Blesssed Metod Dominik Trcka

Also known as Dominik Trcka, Metod Dominik Trcka, and Motodij Dominik Trcka.

Redemporist priest. Martyr. Martyred on 23 March 1959 in a Communinist concentation camp at Leopoldov, Trnavský kraj, Slovakia.

Saint Nicon and Companions

Died c. 250. Nicon, a distinguished Roman soldier, was converted to Christianity while traveling in the East. His master, Theodosius of Cyzicus, left him in charge of 200 disciples. When persecution threatened Palestine, they fled to Sicily where they were martyred under Decius. In error, the Roman Martyrology assigns their suffering to Caesarea in Palestine.

Blessed Peter of Ghisengi

Also known as Peter of Gubbio

Born at Gubbio, Umbria, Italy; died c. 1250-1350(?); cultus confirmed by Pope Pius IX. Blessed Peter was a scion of the distinguished Ghisleni family. He became an Augustinian hermit and later the provincial of his congregation. He is venerated at Gubbio, where his relics rest and where many miracles were reported at his tomb

Also known as Rafka, Rebecca, Pierina, or Boutrosiya.

Too often we forget that there are other rites within the Catholic Church beyond the Roman Rite. Blessed Rafqa (Rebecca) is God's gift to the universal Church from the Maronites, which hale from Lebanon. Raqfa, like the bride in the Song of Songs, listened to her Beloved's call: "Come from Lebanon, my promised bride, Come from Lebanon, come on your way. Look down from the heights of Amanus, From the crests of Senir and Hermon, The haunt of lions, The mountains of leopards. The scent of your garments Is like the scent of Lebanon. She is a garden enclosed, My sister, my promised bride; a garden enclosed A sealed fountain Fountain of the garden, Well of living water, Streams flowing down from Lebanon!" [vv. 4:1-15].

Pierina (Petronilla), the only child Mourad Saber Shabaq al-Rayes and his wife Rafqa Gemayel, was named after Saint Peter on whose feast she was born in the land of the Canaanites and Phoenicians. This blind seer, known as the "Little Flower of Lebanon," the "Purple Rose," and the "Silent, Humble Nun," related the story of her life to her mother superior months before her death.

Life in Lebanon was not easy even in the 19th century and was made more difficult for Pierina by the death of her mother when she was six years old. She worked as a house maid in Syria for four years (1843-1847) and a few years later (1853) entered the Marian Order of the Immaculate Conception as a postulant at the convent of Our Lady of Liberation in Bikfaya. Saint Maron's Day 1855 she was received as a novice and took the name Anissa (Agnes). Five years later she witnessed the massacre of Christians in Deir-el-Qamar. In 1871, her order was united with that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to form the Order of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
