ATLANTIS, Fla. (AP) The Rev. Rex Humbard, a former itinerant preacher whose televangelism ministry once reached more parts of the globe than any other religious program, died Friday a family spokeswoman said. He was 88. Humbard died of natural causes at a South Florida hospital near his Lantana home, family spokeswoman Kathy Scott said.
"He was the ultimate role model in showing love and caring about other people over and above himself," his grandson Rex Humbard III said.
The son of evangelists, Humbard evolved his ministry from revivals across the country to a permanent home in Akron, Ohio, and television. He realized the potential of the new medium in the early 1950s and became known to millions by the 1970s. But financial overreaching eventually eroded his organization.

I see a lot of the key figures of todays Christianity leaving us or getting on in years. I'm concerned about the church for the future. I don't see very many quality people to assume the reigns.
I was about to say some of those “nasty” things about Rev. Humbard but before I did I went to Yahoo and read is obituary there. He seems to have been a sincere minister. He was not from all accounts a very good businessman in the sense that he handled large scale funds well. But his ministry was never touched by the kind of scandals that hit Jim and Tammy Bakker or Jimmy Swaggert. He seems instead to have been nothing more or less than a man trying to preach The Gospel to as many people as he could.
I doubt he was without flaws. None of us are. But he seems to have been honest and sincere. I am sorry for his passing.
I'm sure, 50 or 100 years ago, someone said the exact same thing. God finds quality people when he wants them.
I was noticing that, too.
RIP, you are home.
I remember my mom said she would baby-sit his kids when they came to Washington State. She really liked him.
