Disgraced pastor Ted Haggard won't be fundraising for a Monument nonprofit run by a sex offender, won't be ministering to anyone and needs to get a job, his overseers said in a statement released Wednesday.
"Mr. Haggard's solicitation for personal support was inappropriate," his church supervisors said.
The statement came one day after the four-member team of ministers responsible for overseeing the spiritual restoration of Haggard met with him in Phoenix.

How about airport restroom attendant?
Mr. Haggard seems to be “unclear on the concept,” as the saying goes. I think it’s a tossup whether he decides to ditch the “overseers” and pursue his “real self,” or whether he’ll experience actual repentance at some point.
A job at Wal-mart would be a good start, I think.
Mr Haggert should have thought about his the consequences of doing the stupid things he did before he did them!
Ted should just admit he’s gay and move in with Larry Craig.
Nope, to many kids!
I'm sure then need someone covering garbage down at the local dump.
CC&E
To be fair, nothing so far indicates that he's interested in children. However, better safe than sorry.
No, no. Internet tech support.
Get a Job, SHolololola
Ted Haggard’s church in Colorado had paid him a very generous salary and a year extra when he resigned. It was inappropriate for him to seek further help from Christians.
I hope we are all praying for this man and his family, and not simply making light of his situation. Without God’s grace, we are all Ted Haggard.
lol that’s not nice.
He should have of course, that goes without saying.
Agreed all around.
I think he was hoping it was.
It has been dead for a long time, being revived only to get rid of people who object to false doctrine.
I agree. But I tend not to cut these blatant wolves in sheep’s clothing much slack. Nor did Paul, nor did Christ nor any of the prophets.
Well-done overseers!
This is almost as delicious as those “total reversal of fortune” moments
when the bad-guy in a movie has a momentary inkling that he’s lost at
his wicked little game.
(I’d rather Haggard have done a “straighten up and fly right”,
but in not, he needed a reality check of this sort.)
Nice to see that “cheap grace” wasn’t used by some whimpy overseers
in order to let Haggard off the hook for his attempt to again fleece the flock.
Hmmmm...Jesus was certainly a champion of the sexually broken. It remains to be seen - how much was/is Ted Haggard a “wolf.” It seems as far as I can tell, that he didn’t “prey” (sexually) on the members of his congregation, but wrestled with his inner demons away from his city. The thing I hate is that he went back to the congregation to ask for more money. To me, that is more “wolfish” than the sexual problems.
As far as he is unrepentant, he is a wolf. The going back to the people for money proves it to me. Whether he preys on his congregation or lost souls on the street doesn’t matter to me.
Wow, this is remarkable. I wonder if Haggard will listen.
You have a point, but I see it a little differently - I don’t think that we can know is he is unrepentant just because he went back to ask for money. The money and sexual issues are related, but not conclusive of lack of repentance.
I still will pray for the man and his family
Good one. Bet he hasn’t considered that. You should write him to let him know, although I’m not sure how well it pays.
Last week, Haggard had e-mailed a KRDO-TV reporter in Colorado Springs, asking that supporters send contributions to Families with a Mission, a Monument nonprofit run by Paul Huberty, a twice-convicted sex offender.
In his fundraising solicitation, Haggard said he was looking for people who would be willing to support him and his wife, Gayle, monthly for two years while they sought to obtain their counseling degrees.
Haggard also had told KRDO that he and his family were planning to move into the Phoenix Dream Center, a halfway house, where he and his wife would minister to the “broken people” there.
The overseers said Wednesday that Haggard will not be moving into the Dream Center.
“Mr. Haggard will not be moving in or working with the Dream Center. He will not be doing any ministry. He will be seeking secular employment to support himself.”
http://slog.thestranger.com/2007/08/families_with_a_mission further states that:
Ted Haggard, as we learned today on Colorado Confidential, wants you to pay for his and his wifes living expenses while they go to collegetheyre destitute, you see. (Colorado Confidential reports that the Haggards currently own a house in Colorado Springs valued at close to a three quarters of a million dollars.) In an open letter sent to Haggards gullible supporters, the disgraced preacher gives two addresses where money can be sent. Checks can be sent to Haggards mailing address in Phoenix or, if a supporter needs a tax deduction, checks can be sent to Families With a Mission, a charity based in Colorado Springs. [Write] their check to Families With A Mission and put a separate note on it that it is for the Haggard family, Haggard writes in the letter posted on Colorado Confidential, then Families With a Mission will mail us 90% of the funds for support and use 10% for administrative costs.
As posted earlier, local attorney and Slog reader Dave Coffman located documents on file with the Colorado Secretary of State that showed Families With a Mission voluntarily dissolved on February 23, 2007.
Hm. Weirdwho knew you could get a tax deduction from dissolved charity?
And it gets weirder: Theres only one name on file with the Colorado Secretary of State in connection with Families With a Mission: Paul Huberty.
Huberty is the registered agent of Families With a Mission and the registered agents mailing addressPOB 63125, Colorado Springs, CO 80962-3125is the same address Haggard included in his letter to his supporters. Another address on file with the Colorado Secretary of State for Families With a Mission is 855 Pebble Creek Ct., Monument, CO 80132. Thats the charitys principal office mailing address. According to the Assessors office in El Paso County, Colorado, 855 Pebble Creek Ct. is a private residence owned by Paul Huberty. (The only other address listed for Families With a Mission is a home that Huberty used to own.)
And heres what Coffman learned when he started searching through public records: A man named Paul G. Huberty was convicted of having sex with his 17 year-old ward while he was in the military and stationed in Germany. Paul G. Huberty eventually moved to Hawaii, where he was on that states sex offender registryyou can download a PDF here. Hawaiis sex offender registry mentions a conviction for a sex offense in 2004. Court records in Hawaii show that Paul G. Huberty was found guilty of attempted sexual assault in January of 2004 (download em here, here, and here), and sentenced a year in jail with all but six months suspended. Huberty was also put on probation for five years, ordered to take polygraphs, not allowed to possess pornography, not allowed on the property of Kona Christian Academy and other schools, not allowed to posses firearms, forbidden from foster parenting or being the guardian of a minor, and ordered to pay restitution to a crime victims fund.
When Paul G. Hubertys moved out of the state of Hawaii he was required to register his new address, which he did: 855 Pebble Creek Ct., Monument, CO 80132, the principal mailing address for the charity Families With a Mission, which also happens to be a home owned by Paul Huberty, the registered charitys agent.
So the man who heads up the defunct charity Families With a Missionthe charity thats going to take a 10% cut from all tax deductible donations to the Haggard familywould appear to be a registered sex offender. Well, in Hawaii at any rate. Paul Huberty has not, according to publicly available records, registered as a sex offender in Colorado, something he is required to do by state law. Coffman put in a call to officials in Colorado to see if Huberty has registered too recently to appear on the sex offenders website, and hes waiting to hear back.
Nice friends you got there, Ted.
Good posts.
Unfortunately, from what I’m observing in my own church, I think more pastors should get a secular job, even part time. Many are looking lazier these days and not in the “servant” mode.
I agree.
Either work 24-7 as a priest (a la Catholic) or else work for a living.
I hear ya. Bob DeWaay had been speaking against the idea of ‘professional clergy’ also. In the AFLC they require you to have a degree with which you can support yourself before they accept you in seminary. The idea is so that if your church is small you won’t have to burden them for income.
ergh. Yeah I’d heard the shorthand version of this ... yikes. Just shows me that ‘therapy’ is a far cry from ‘repentance and ‘sanctification.
When someone repents they don’t consider themselves worthy of this kind of thing. Check the story of the prodigal son — he didn’t want his place back, he asked only to be allowed to be a servant.
Therapy?
The predominant examples of therapy that I have observed in those reasonably close to me (not to the extent that they involved my children} is to enable, not to interdict. To support, not to stop. To facilitate, not to prevent.
I think that when a shrink recommends that a lunatic be set free, that that shrink be accountable for the lunatic’s actions for the next reasonable period of time.
hear hear!
You mean Catholic Priests work for a living? (Other than the teaching orders, that is).
No, what I meant is that the folks that preach the Gospel either be about the Lord’s business 24/7 on call, and supported by the laity that pay the bills for him, or else he support himself and preach as he has time for.
I don’t see that the televangelists and the megachurch pastors spend more time on the Lord’s work, as opposed to the work of Mammon.
