An act of reparation

A prayer that is called “an act of reparation”  should in some way address those four elements that are given in Number 23 of the Constitutions as mentioned above.  There should be the welcoming of the Spirit’s action in our lives that moves us to respond and return love.

The love of Jesus as manifested in His life and especially in His passion and death should be brought to mind as a kind of impetus to love in return.  There should be some expression of our uniting ourselves with Jesus in His return of love to the Father.

Finally, there should be a commitment on our part to giving our lives to helping people believe in God’s love for them through the experience of our love for them, especially towards those who feel most alienated from God and from one another.  Not ever act of reparation can contain all those elements nor is it necessary that it does, but to be an act of reparation some of those elements should be present.

TOPICS: Catholic; Prayer; Worship
KEYWORDS: catholiclist; reparation
Lord, we ask you to forgive those who use your name in blasphemy, those who denigrate Your Blessed Mother and those whose anti-Catholicism causes all love and understanding to cease in their hearts.

Help us to be patient in our everyday lives as we strive to live Your will and imitate Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ in all things.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Saint Augustine of Hippo

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit,

that my thoughts may all be holy.

Act in me, O Holy Spirit,

that my work, too, may be holy.

Guide my heart, O Holy Spirit,

that I love but what is holy.

Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit,

to defend all that is holy.

Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit,

that I always may be holy.

Amen

Reparation—Love–Atonement

by Joseph K. Hogan

Reparation, love and atonement are three theological themes in contemporary life. As we look at these three topics, we can make a journey of Faith and discovery. Reparation, love and atonement are contained in the divine mystery so that we shall find that they expand and contract like breath the more we contemplate their meaning. At the same time as we touch the infinite, we will discover that we see the ordinary.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as promoted by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and St. Claude de la Columbiere certainly contained the notions of reparation, sacrificial love, and atonement. By prayer, by sacrifice and most certainly by a dialogue of love for love, a person returns to the Heart of Christ love, reparation and atonement for all who do not love Christ. Prayer makes reparation, especially when done before the Blessed Sacrament for all the outrages this Divine Heart has received from men and women, even from those who are especially consecrated to his service.

Reparation is like paying a debt, a payback, a return of something that is owed to another. In theology it refers to a relationship one has with Christ in that you want to make up for the inadequacies of someone else’s debt to God. In that respect, reparation is a participation in the redemptive action of Christ in His Passion. The person through love makes up to Christ not only for something that happened 2000 years ago on Calvary, but for the unlove which is happening this day and time.

Atonement is much the same. In a certain spirituality, because Christ was mocked and made a fool of; men and women become fools for Christ to atone for the humiliation of Christ. We atone to Christ for sin by prayer, penance, and self-denial; we ‘make up’ for the disastrous effects of a sinful life. Some might say that since Christ is God and now risen in glory, He does not need now our love and reparation. This is not the thought of the Catholic Church. Christ has a human Heart which knows and feels the lack of love even in a glorified state. We cannot deny Christ anything which a human heart now feels, otherwise He would not be man. Except for sin, Christ is everything we as human beings are now.

Our love and reparation has brought us a long way, and yet because we are dealing with a divine mystery, we have further to go. The surest way to offer love, reparation and atonement to Christ is still the Sacrifice of the Mass.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: “The Holy Sacrifice because it makes present the one sacrifice of Christ the Saviour and includes the Church’s offering. The terms holy sacrifice of the Mass, sacrifice of praise, spiritual sacrifice, pure and holy sacrifice are also used, since it completes and surpasses all the sacrifices of the Old Covenant” (1330). The Divine Lit urgy remains the privileged place where love, atonement, and reparation can be offered up to and through Christ our Saviour. The Sacred Heart devotion has stressed prayer before he Blessed Sacrament in adoration and Holy Com mun ions of reparation.

Some if not all, are called by Christ to a sacrificial life, certainly those who live the consecrated life in chastity, poverty and obedience. The life of the consecrated virgin in the Catholic Church is a reparatory way of life based on love and atonement. “Atone ment” means at-one-ment, that is, being one with Christ in love.

Love and reparation affects the Blessed Virgin Mary also. At Fatima, Our Lady asked that reparation be made to her Immaculate Heart for the sins against her Immaculate Heart. The Blessed Mother is associated with Christ in a saving manner, so it is not surprising that our reparation in union with Mary hastens the coming of Christ’s Kingdom. It is fitting that on the Miraculous Medal is the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary side-by-side.

We do not really see the effects of our own life of prayer, atonement, reparation, or even our own sighs of love to the Heart of Christ. However, the effects of our love for and in Christ, far outweigh evil. Repara tion-Love-Atonement directly affect the Body of Christ. Christ is one with His own Mystical Body and we and all believers are part and members of the Body of Christ. And the rest of humanity, all men and women who live now and whoever have lived? They too, in some manner we know not, are contained in the Heart of Christ.

Our own atonement has many facets when done in Christ. Every act of consecrated obedience atones for every act of disobedience in some manner, the pure of heart atone for impurity, and so on down the line of every virtue. Every humility, lowliness, counteracts every hubris, that is grave pride. Atonement is more than tit for tat, it is greater beyond measure.

In part, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “Sin is an offense against reason, truth and right conscience; it is a failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. It wounds the nature of man and injures hu man solidarity. It has been defined as ‘an utterance, a deed or desire contrary to eternal law’” (1849).

Likewise, the Catechism states: “In her Magis terial teaching of the Faith and in the witness of her saints, the Church has never forgotten that, ‘Sinners were the authors and the ministers of all the sufferings that the Divine Redeemer endured.’ Taking into account the fact our sins affect Christ himself, the Church does not hesitate to impute to Christians the gravest responsibility for the torments inflicted upon Jesus” (598).

By our lives, by the simple morning offering, by love, we make reparation to Christ for sin. What is especially dear to Christ is the consecrated life, that life lived in evangelical chastity and obedience and holy poverty. Those so consecrated to Christ are the friends of God and eat at the banquet table of grace. The consecrated person lives a sacrificial life of reparation, love, atonement, in an ineffable manner.

There is another atonement for sin and that is for the sins against the dignity of men and women which cry to heaven for vengeance. That is the mass murderers, the Gulags such as Kolyma in Magadan, Russia, the crimes against millions, against the unborn. Rep a ration for such offenses is made by men and women who willingly offer to the Heart of Christ their own hard manual labor, their own sufferings in a sick bed, their own grinding poverty in atonement.

Reparation-love-atonement have taken us a long way. Perhaps what is needed is an understanding that a single act of loving reparation in Christ is able to atone for a magnitude of evil. Christ our Lord and the Father are not bystanders to the misery of the world, but summon from here, there and everywhere men and women to atone and make reparation for sin. By love, reparation, and atonement—the world is restored to the Father of us all.

From Catholic Culture

Act of Reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (Iesu dulcissime - Reparationis actus)

A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful, who piously recite the act of reparation.

A plenary indulgence is granted if it is publicly recited on the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Most sweet Jesus, whose overflowing charity for men is requited by so much forgetfulness, negligence and contempt, behold us prostrate before you, eager to repair by a special act of homage the cruel indifference and injuries to which your loving Heart is everywhere subject.

Mindful, alas! that we ourselves have had a share in such great indignities, which we now deplore from the depths of our hearts, we humbly ask your pardon and declare our readiness to atone by voluntary expiation, not only for our own personal offenses, but also for the sins of those, who, straying far from the path of salvation, refuse in their obstinate infidelity to follow you, their Shepherd and Leader, or, renouncing the promises of their baptism, have cast off the sweet yoke of your law.

We are now resolved to expiate each and every deplorable outrage committed against you; we are now determined to make amends for the manifold offenses against Christian modesty in unbecoming dress and behavior, for all the foul seductions laid to ensnare the feet of the innocent, for the frequent violations of Sundays and holy-days, and the shocking blasphemies uttered against you and your Saints. We wish also to make amends for the insults to which your Vicar on earth and your priests are subjected, for the profanation, by conscious neglect or terrible acts of sacrilege, of the very Sacrament of your divine love, and lastly for the public crimes of nations who resist the rights and teaching authority of the Church which you have founded.

Would that we were able to wash away such abominations with our blood. We now offer, in reparation for these violations of your divine honor, the satisfaction you once made to your Eternal Father on the cross and which you continue to renew daily on our altars; we offer it in union with the acts of atonement of your Virgin Mother and all the Saints and of the pious faithful on earth; and we sincerely promise to make recompense, as far as we can with the help of your grace, for all neglect of your great love and for the sins we and others have committed in the past. Henceforth, we will live a life of unswerving faith, of purity of conduct, of perfect observance of the precepts of the Gospel and especially that of charity. We promise to the best of our power to prevent others from offending you and to bring as many as possible to follow you.

O loving Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mother, our model in reparation, deign to receive the voluntary offering we make of this act of expiation; and by the crowning gift of perseverance keep us faithful unto death in our duty and the allegiance we owe to you, so that we may all one day come to that happy home, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, God, forever and ever. Amen.

My addition to the Catechism:
Likewise, the Catechism states: “In her Magis terial teaching of the Faith and in the witness of her saints, the Church has never forgotten that, ‘[WE]Sinners were the authors and the ministers of all the sufferings that the Divine Redeemer endured.’

Lord and Father, I remember all (well, okay, SOME of) the times when my harsh words, my eagerness to show anger, and my readiness to cast blame obscured the light of Your love in my heart, my deeds, my life. I know that, as a consequence, where there was already bitterness, I spread gall; where there was resentment, I injured even more; where there was hostility, I added enmity and estrangement.
Once again, I ask you to make me over in your risen image, to revivify me with your Spirit, and to guide my faltering and half-hearted steps into Your way of pardon and peace,
Through your Son, our redeemer and pattern, who with you in the Unity of your life giving Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting.

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and the Blood, Soul and Divinity of your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Hope of the despairing,
you desire the sinner have life not death.
Savior of those who have fallen, you promised:
"Ask and I shall give to you, knock and I shall open to you."
Strengthened by the hope of your kindness,
we cry out for your mercy.
Like the publican we pray:
"O God, have mercy on your sinful servants."
Pardon us, our Creator.
We have sinned against heaven and you,
and no longer deserve to be called your children.
Let your kindness reach us;
Do not extinguish our lamps at your festal banquet.
Open the door of your goodness,
and cover us with the mantle of your compassion,
then we shall be sheltered from your awesome justice.
With the penitent sinner who returned justified,
and the crucified evildoer who believed and entered paradise,
may we obtain the pardon of faults and forgiveness of sins,
and enter the garden of light on the Day of your second coming.
To you we lift our voices in praise and glory, for ever. Amen.

To Our Lady of Tears

Do you walk across the shards and rubble, O Mary my mother,
Seeing the dark that man will do in the Father's name,
Listening to the grieving voices adding heat to the flame
That seems to be a never ending pyre of hate for one another,
And shed tears for all those who will not listen to your Son,
And shed tears for those who die, one by one,
Cain's endless slaughter of his brother?

Holy Mother of God, Immaculate and true
You who listen to our cries and pleas of desperation
You who work to aid in the darkest situation,
You, whose heart reaches out endlessly anew,
Forgive us for the tears we in our anger have caused,
May your prayers lead us, our anger paused,
To that place your Son will show us what to do.

Lord,
forgive us,
a wayward and sin-stained mankind,
for the sin of letting angry people
rise among us,
setting them free
to kill the innocent
for love or lust,
for greed,
for self-righteousness,
for power,
for the sake of politcal stance,
for honor,
out of impatience and frustration,
expedience,
sometimes, even, in your name.

O Lord,
how the blood of Abel calls out,
joined by so many others,
such a loud cacaphony of human darkness.

Today, O Lord,
I offer up my remorse to you,
my tears,
for each life snuffed short,
each family twisted,
each mournful keening
echoing through the millenia,
the sackcloth and ashes of my lone heart
in repentance and sorrow at what we have wrought.

O Lord,
on this dark day,
I pray for your voice to touch each and every heart,
and show us what we do in truth,
help us to recoil from the blacknes we have wrought,
until we repudiate the darkness
and choose your light.

O Sacred Heart,
so burning with the fire of love.
O Heart of my Savior,
Sanctuary of all grace,
all love,
all truth,
I adore you, I praise you, I bless you,
and I love you with all the strength and love
my poor heart has to give.

O Heart above all hearts,
forgive this poor, scarred heart of mine,
so often choosing not to love,
not to listen to your call,
cold when you would fill it with fire,
rebellious when you would lead me beside the still waters,
unfaithful wihen you wiould fill it full with your grace.

Forgive me, O Fount of endless mercy,
I who deserve to be cast out of your presence and into the endless darkness,
but who through your mercy find myself here,
at the fount of the Living Water.

O Bridegroom beyond all others,
by your cross,
by the very act of your choosing to be the Victim of love,
by your loving self-sacrifice in the Eucharistic Presence
that feeds my very soul with your own loving self,
I beg you, O Heart of Divine Mercy,
to forgive me for all those times,
all those sins
of ingratitude,
forgetfulness,
lack of faithfulness,
and all the other wrongs I have done to you,
whom I should love with an undivided heart.

With tears of contrition and grief for what I have wrought,
I come before you
longing to make whatever reparation I can,
token of my love for you,
knowing that truly they could never make up for what you are willing to give,
but yet, Lord, here I am.

Let me bear whatever griefs,
whatever suffering you should send my way
willingly as a reparation to thee,
for the wrongs I have done,
for the wrongs others do,
and for the conversion of hearts who do not love you.

Let each beat of my heart
be a prayer of love you you,
each breath I take,
a rememberance of Him who gives me breath,
each day granted
another chance to speak to you of my love,
each hour a celebration of the hope you give me,
each minute passing,
a thanksgiving of my joy at having been touched
by your love.

O Ocean of mercy,
whose love is big enough to embrace the whole world,
hide me in the depths of your heart forever.

Amen.

Thanks for doing what my scattered mind might not have been able to grasp today.

I join in Reparation for all that I have done for all of my life which has not reached out with love to my fellow man.

I would wash myself in the Waters of the Hoy Spirit, the tears of Our Blessed Mother and with the humility and gratitude for my great fortune in being in this place at this time.

In atonement for my huge selfishness, I ask forgiveness of all.

Enlighten me and Strengthen me on the path which best suits my own needs for offering my own acts and prayers of Reparation.

Prayer of +Basil the Great

O Sovereign Lord Jesus Christ our God, source of life and immortality, Who art the Author of all creation, visible and invisible, the equally everlasting and co-eternal Son of the eternal Father, Who through the excess of Thy goodness didst in the last days assume our flesh and wast crucified for us, ungrateful and ignorant as we were, and didst cause through Thy own Blood the restoration of our nature which had been marred by sin: O immortal King, accept the repentance even of me a sinner, and incline Thine ear to me and hear my words. For I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned against heaven and before Thee, and I am not worthy to gaze on the height of Thy glory; for I have provoked Thy goodness by transgressing Thy commandments and not obeying Thy orders. But Thou, O Lord, in Thy forbearance, patience, and great mercy, hast not given me up to be destroyed with my sins, but Thou awaitest my complete conversion. For Thou, O Lover of men, hast said through Thy Prophet that Thou desirest not the death of the sinner, but that he should return to Thee and live. For Thou dost not will, O Lord, that the work of Thy hands should be destroyed, neither dost Thou delight in the destruction of men, but Thou desirest that all should be saved and come to a knowledge of the Truth. Therefore, though I am unworthy both of heaven and earth, and even of this transient life, since I have completely succumbed to sin and am a slave to pleasure and have defaced Thy image, yet being Thy work and creation, wretch that I am, even I do not despair of my salvation and dare to draw near to Thy boundless compassion. So receive even me, O Christ Lover of men, as the harlot, as the thief, as the publican, and as the prodigal; and take from me the heavy burden of my sins, Thou Who takest away the sin of the world, Who healest men's sicknesses, Who callest the weary and heavy laden to Thyself and givest them rest; for Thou camest not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. And purify me from all defilement of flesh and spirit. Teach me to achieve perfect holiness in the fear of Thee, that with the clear witness of my conscience I may receive the portion of Thy holy Things and be united with Thy holy Body and Blood, and have Thee dwelling and remaining in me with the Father and Thy Holy Spirit. And, O Lord Jesus Christ, my God, let not the communion of Thy immaculate and life-giving Mysteries be to me for condemnation nor let it make me sick in body or soul through my partaking of them unworthily; but grant me till my last breath to receive without condemnation the portion of Thy holy Things, for communion with the Holy Spirit, as a provision for eternal life, and as an acceptable defense at Thy dread tribunal, so that I too with all Thy elect may become a partaker of Thy pure joys which Thou hast prepared for those who love Thee, O Lord, in whom Thou art glorified throughout the ages. Amen.

Prayer of +John Chrysostomos

O Lord my God, I know that I am not worthy or sufficient that Thou shouldest come under the roof of the house of my soul, for all is desolate and fallen, and Thou hast not with me a place fit to lay Thy head. But as from the highest heaven Thou didst humble Thyself for our sake, so now conform Thyself to my humility. And as Thou didst consent to lie in a cave and in a manger of dumb beasts, so also consent to lie in the manger of my unspiritual soul and to enter my defiled body. And as Thou didst not disdain to enter and dine with sinners in the house of Simon the Leper, so consent also to enter the house of my humble soul which is leprous and sinful. And as Thou didst not reject the woman, who was a harlot and a sinner like me, when she approached and touched Thee, so also be compassionate with me, a sinner, as I approach and touch Thee, and let the live coal of Thy most holy Body and precious Blood be for the sanctification and enlightenment and strengthening of my humble soul and body, for a relief from the burden of my many sins, for a protection from all diabolical practices, for a restraint and a check on my evil and wicked way of life, for the mortification of passions, for the keeping of Thy commandments, for an increase of Thy divine grace, and for the advancement of Thy Kingdom. For it is not insolently that I draw near to Thee, O Christ my God, but as taking courage from Thy unspeakable goodness, and that I may not by long abstaining from Thy communion become a prey to the spiritual wolf. Therefore, I pray Thee, O Lord, Who alone art holy, sanctify my soul and body, my mind and heart, my emotions and affections, and wholly renew me. Root the fear of Thee in my members, and make Thy sanctification indelible in me. Be also my helper and defender, guide my life in peace, and make me worthy to stand on Thy right hand with Thy Saints: through the prayers and intercessions of Thy immaculate Mother, of Thy ministering Angels, of the immaculate Powers and of all the Saints who have ever been pleasing to Thee. Amen.

Prayer of +Symeon the New Theologian

From sullied lips,
From an abominable heart,
From an unclean tongue,
Out of a polluted soul,
Receive my prayer, O my Christ.
Reject me not,
Nor my words, nor my ways,
Nor even my shamelessness,
But give me courage to say
What I desire, my Christ.
And even more, teach me
What to do and say.
I have sinned more than the harlot
Who, on learning where Thou wast lodging,
Bought myrrh,
And dared to come and anoint
Thy feet, my Christ,
My Lord and my God.
As Thou didst not repulse her
When she drew near from her heart,
Neither, O Word, abominate me,
But grant me Thy feet
To clasp and kiss,
And with a flood of tears
As with most precious myrrh
Dare to anoint them.
Wash me with my tears
And purify me with them, O Word.
Forgive my sins
And grant me pardon.
Thou knowest the multitude of my evil-doings,
Thou knowest also my wounds,
And Thou seest my bruises.
But also Thou knowest my faith,
And Thou beholdest my willingness,
And Thou hearest my sighs.
Nothing escapes Thee, my God,
My Maker, my Redeemer,
Not even a tear-drop,
Nor part of a drop.
Thine eyes know
What I have not achieved,
And in Thy book
Things not yet done
Are written by Thee.
See my depression,
See how great is my trouble,
And all my sins
Take from me, O God of all,
That with a clean heart,
Trembling mind
And contrite spirit
I may partake of Thy pure
And all-holy Mysteries
By which all who eat and drink Thee
With sincerity of heart
Are quickened and deified.
For Thou, my Lord, hast said:
"Whoever eats My Flesh
And drinks My Blood
Abides in Me
And I in Him."
Wholly true is the word
Of my Lord and God.
For whoever partakes of Thy divine
And deifying Gifts
Certainly is not alone,
But is with Thee, my Christ,
Light of the Triune Sun
Which illumines the world.
And that I may not remain alone
Without Thee, the Giver of Life,
My Breath, my Life,
My Joy,
The Salvation of the world,
Therefore I have drawn near to Thee
As Thou seest, with tears
And with a contrite spirit.
Ransom of my offences,
I beseech Thee to receive me,
And that I may partake without condemnation
Of Thy life-giving and perfect Mysteries,
That Thou mayest remain as Thou hast said
With me, thrice-wretched as I am,
Lest the tempter may find me
Without Thy grace
And craftily seize me,
And having deceived me, may seduce me,
From Thy deifying words.
Therefore I fall at Thy feet
And fervently cry to Thee:
As Thou receivedst the Prodigal
And the Harlot who drew near to Thee,
So have compassion and receive me,
The profligate and the prodigal,
As with contrite spirit
I now draw near to Thee.
I know, O Saviour, that no other
Has sinned against Thee as I,
Nor has done the deeds
That I have committed.
But this again I know
That not the greatness of my offences
Nor the multitude of my sins
Surpasses the great patience
Of my God,
And His extreme love for men.
But with the oil of compassion
Those who fervently repent
Thou dost purify and enlighten
And makest them children of the light,
Sharers of Thy Divine Nature.
And Thou dost act most generously,
For what is strange to Angels
And to the minds of men
Often Thou tellest to them
As to Thy true friends.
These things make me bold, my Christ,
These things give me wings,
And I take courage from the wealth
Of Thy goodness to us.
And rejoicing and trembling at once,
I who am straw partake of fire,
And, strange wonder!
I am ineffably bedewed,
Like the bush of old
Which burnt without being consumed.
Therefore with thankful mind,
And with thankful heart,
And with thankfulness in all the members
Of my soul and body,
I worship and magnify
And glorify Thee, my God,
For Thou art blessed,
Now and throughout the ages.

Amen.
