I'm going back a little further than that.
Bob Santamaria was the man behind the Industrial Groups that fought communist influence in the trade unions in the '40s and '50s. This led to the Great Split in the Labor Party of 1955 and the formation of the Democratic Labor Party. DLP preferences kept Labor out of Government until 1972.
B.A. Santamaria passed away in 1999. His State Funeral at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne was conducted by the then Archbishop of Melbourne, now Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell. It was a grand and moving farewell for a great Catholic warrior. There were thousands outside who couldn't fit in the doors.

That would be back when Sir Robert Menzies was Prime Minister, wouldn't it?
That's the reason Sir Robert Menzies is Australia's longest serving Prime Minister (17 years).
Without the Split and the DLP, he wouldn't have made it past his third election.
