History presents few characters that have suffered more senseless misrepresentation, even bald caricature, than Tetzel. "Even while he lived stories which contained an element of legend gathered around his name, until at last, in the minds of the uncritical Protestant historians, he became the typical indulgence-monger, upon whom any well-worn anecdote might be fathered" (Beard, "Martin Luther", London, 1889, 210). For a critical scholarly study which shows him in a proper perspective, he had to wait the researches of our own time, mainly at the hands of Dr. Nicholas Paulus, who is closely followed in this article. In the first place, his teaching regarding the indulgences for the living was correct. It was simply a permit to select a proper confessor, who only after a contrite confession would absolve from sin and reserved cases, and who possessed at the same time facilities to impart the plenary indulgence (Paulus, "Johann Tetzel", 103).

I've witnessed no better example of the similarity of Catholic and Protestant soldiers than them gathered together around captured enemy weapons praying together for God to help them defeat the enemy.

The Catholic commanders, officers, NCO's that I know all realize that praying for their own victory means praying for the destruction of their enemy.

They also realize that the best stanza of the National Anthem is the best stanza.

Almighty God, who guided the heroes of old to victory on the field of battle, we appeal to You again to strengthen the hand of those who seek to end the evil work of evil men. As David withstood the Philistines in the name of the Lord Almighty, we pray for our troops who stand against the terrorists of Al Qaeda and their leaders, Osama bin Laden and Musab al Zarqawi.

Grant them opportunity and intelligence to penetrate the secrecy surrounding these evil men. Grant our warriors the ability to notice the small things that make a big difference. Fight against bin Laden and Zarqawi to reveal their locations, their means, and their plans. Give our soldiers in these times the power to disrupt, debilitate, and destroy. We pray for the very soon capture or killing of bin Laden and Zarqawi.

We pray this in the name of Jesus; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

You, O Father, have spoken clearly against those who would murder. We are assured in your word that Osama bin Ladena nd Musab al Zarqawi are evil men, for:

Your promise is that these evil ones will receive justice for their murders:

Lord God, we bow in praise and adoration before You for You are worthy to receive glory, honor, and praise. All things were made by You, and without You was not anything made that was made. It is humbling that all the awesomeness of the universe would stoop to consider sinners like us.

The bible teaches that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. It even teaches that for Christians there is a sin unto death. You warned us through the Apostle Paul that some sins require "the destruction of the flesh that the spirit might be saved in the day of the Lord."

We do not exempt ourselves from Your holy standard.

Therefore, we also pray for justice for those who have been and who are being ruthlessly murdered by Osama bin Laden and Musab al Zarqawi. We pray that You will bring about soon their capture or killing, so that their evil will be terminated and so that all will know the glory of Your justice.

We pray for their soon capture or killing. Bring successful termination to the hunt for these murderers of the innocent.
