Bump and thanks for posting this! It was possible to sense that there was a duality to Arnold's efforts between his populist speeches on the stump and his private meetings with those conservatives who continually came out and said "Well, I spoke to Arnold, and he reassured me. . ."

I hate it when Admin Mod keeps changing a title that makes more sense than the one that came with the story... what was wrong with it? <sigh

My title was "The Untold Story Of The Rise Of The Governator." Simple and sweet.

"After Schwarzenegger had been stuck in second place in the polls for weeks on end, the leader in the race, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, accepted millions of dollars in contributions from Indian gaming tribes and big labor unions..." The world according to the SacBee. In truth, Arnold never trailed in ANY poll OTHER THAN the LATimes poll, which is definitely suspect. Every other poll had him ahead by various amounts all within shouting distance of the eventual margin of victory. The LATimes poll never came close to reality.
