The most recent polling on Thursday had Arnold leading 23-18 over Lt. Gov. Gusto Man Breasts...still close but probably enough of a margin for McClintock to make the arguement to stay in the race.

You know, I am actually happy when anyone makes a ton o bucks in this great land of ours - but, as a voter, I do not look at billionaire candidates and think: Ah, yes, that person and I have SOOOO much in common! like the poster here said.

California Republican Bill Simon drops out of Davis recall race
ASSOCIATED PRESS
9:40 a.m., August 23, 2003
LOS ANGELES Republican Bill Simon dropped out of the gubernatorial recall race Saturday amid calls from party leaders to consolidate support behind fewer candidates, a campaign official said.
Simon campaign spokesman K.B. Forbes confirmed that the Republican, who lost to Gov. Gray Davis in the 2002 race for governor, was dropping his bid to replace Davis if voters decide to oust the governor.
Forbes said Simon planned to release a statement Saturday saying: "I strongly believe that the desire of Californians must come before the aspirations of any single candidate. There are too many Republicans in this race, and the people of this state simply cannot risk a continuation of the Gray Davis legacy."
Forbes denied that Simon's move came in response to any pressure from the party.
"There was absolutely no pressure, no phone calls this was a decision made by Bill Simon based on rational conclusions," Forbes said.
He said Simon would not be available for interviews.

Agreed. I'm sure he realizes that as well. As others have pointed out, Tom should stick in it to get his message out and influence Arnold. Who knows, he could take the lead! But, if not, he will do the right thing and drop out. And he will be highly thought of for doing it by most people, in spite of what some of the die hards on FR think. He will also show that we have a Republican Party in Cali, as opposed to a party of individuals who place self interests first.

Summer, I can understand your consternation at the supposed "Ga ga" factor. Please understand this first of all.
Cruz Bustamante is a man who is a race baiting, socialist, separatist that would make a 1960s democrat hide under a rock rather than vote for this maggot.
On the other end of the spectrum we have McClintock, a man every conservative would be proud to have as governor. So far McClintock hasn't pulled over 10% in the polls. Perhaps some of Simon's votes will enhance that, but even Schwarzenegger seems to be having trouble pulling much more than about 22 to 30% of the polls.
I think it's entirely fair to say some unflattering things about Schwarzenegger, but we shouldn't be the ones doing it. In the end, he may be the only option we have. Is he perfect? No, definately not, far from it. Now, do we wish to see a separatist in office appointing all his little separatist friends to state posts? BustAztlante could possibly be governor for 12.5 years. Do you begin to see why I fail to support the trashing of Arnold Schwarzenegger?
Art Torres, a leading democrat government official for the state and a huge Bustamove supporter said, "Proposition 187 was the last dying gasp of white Americans in California."
We cannot afford to allow Bustamorbid elected. If that offends some conservatives, I'm definately not sorry.
Those of you who state that this is simply a "Ga ga" factor at work here, mean well, but are making a huge mischaracterization of the real issues at play.

Someone who personally with great sweat and effort
crawled up from near enough to the bottom.
That's who. That's how.
My parents' generation never got out from under the mentality impacted on them during the Great Depression.
It's something similar with Arnold. He has not forgotten his past. He particularly feels keenly about disadvantaged children's education. That's another bit of evidence that he's keenly in touch with his past.
Besides all that--he's smart enough to get professional research if nothing else, regarding the masses and less advantaged. He will run a fascinating if not wonderful campaign, IMHO.
Only something miraculously destructive like a sudden brain anyeurism would hinder him, at this point, IMHO.
And I pray nothing like that happens!

I'm well aware of the problems with New England Republicans. I'm well aware of why we blew that open House seat in ME last November. Run a RINO to the left of the 'Rats, and see what you get. That same scare-fest about Conservatives you talk about failed to materialize. Goldwater woke up the party in '64 and made them realize who the REAL enemy was. Telling RINOs to take a hike is the only way to SAVE the party, unless you want the party to look like Massachusetts's where the RINOs killed the party deader than Elvis.

Agreed. Bustamente has promised an $8 billion tax increase, which translated is probably more like $16 billion. Arnold has promised tax cuts. It's a rather simple choice.

The poll is having the affect they hoped for, though. Same as the one last weekend. Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! Yes it's the old, tried and true, management of public opinion by conducting and reporting manipulated polling. The dims are masters of this technique. Even Goebbels is a piker compared to this generation of liars.

We MUST NOT have Davis and ESPECIALLY not have Bustamonte as the winner in this race. If we get Arnold, we're very fortunate. You are right, I can't vote in the election but if I could I would never pull the lever for a leftist lib RINO like Arnie, I garrruntee!
They should provide showers at the polls so all the republicans who feel dirty after voting for Arnie can try to clean up again! (sorry...won't work!)
If you people elect him, you will get the kind of government you deserve...sadly.

Tell me how anyone who makes $30 million a year could even know about a "car tax," let alone want to eliminate Probably the same way a reformed democrat now independent in Florida would even think they know something about the politics in California...
To: TheBattman
Completely agree. McClintock maybe a terrific guy and a solid conservative but he has no shot at election.
If the Republican Party wants to win, they had better unite behind one candidate that is moderate enough to appeal to moderate Democrats in CA.
CA is a Democrat state at present and I would rather take a smaller step right, than lose going for broke.

He has not forgotten his past.
Well, I think he has a very touching life story, from what I know of it.
But so do others in this country.
Also, some say there is much about Arnold's "part" that is about to come out, and is "not pretty" -- according to an article posted on Drudge. I have no idea what that may mean in terms of Arnold's past. But I suspect the fairy tale that is currently Arnold may have a few other chapters to it, if what others are hinting turns out to be true.

Battnan,
Here's an opinion which differs from your own but from a different angle, You wrote,
"Is this what I want - of course not. McClintock would probably be the best medicine for California - unfortunately, he's too conservative to get elected (my humble opinion). Terminator represents the GOP's best odds for winning the election, but he's really a liberal with a more moderate fiscal viewpoint."
Prior to the current festivities in Iraq, the British press and all the liberal journalists loved PM Tony Blair and most of us, who call ourselves conservative, had reservations about him, some even despised him. Now, he's revered, he stepped up, but, in all likelihood, when all the conflict is over, he'll revert to his previous self.
After all is settled, how do we deal with the Tony issue?
To: medscribe
Party leaders have ALREADY told McClintock to quit. Like Simon, he'll be gone from the race before Labor Day. It's 43 days and counting...and the field needs to be cleared and have only 1 viable GOP choice. Yes. McClintock has little money and he will get no suport from the party or affiliated organizations. He's finished. It's Arnold vs Cruz.

Would that be a person from DU or from FR?
To: steve50
I don't blame them, 'cause Arnold's definitely not an ideal candidate from a conservative viewpoint, but I think they're nuts if they think McClintock can win. California conservatives simply have to choose what's more important: a Republican governor to slow the lefties and help Bush in 2004 or helping Bustamonte keep total Demoncrat control of California until it becomes Mexifornia.

Real Republicans in California want a true conservative here, but, most of all, REAL Republicans do NOT want Cruz Bustamonte or Gay-I'd-sell-my-soul-to-the-devil-for-a-vote Davis as our governor. In my world, I'd have McClintock as our governor, but not everyone shares my ideals. We MUST NOT have Davis and ESPECIALLY not have Bustamonte as the winner in this race. If we get Arnold, we're very fortunate. Well said.
