Penthouse Publisher Guccione Says Men Are Basically the Same, Only Sex Lives Vary Depending on Country All men are basically the same, according to Penthouse magazine publisher Bob Guccione only their sex lives vary depending on the country they're from.
"The British are reserved, the French are arrogant, the Italians are lovers, and the Germans like to spank each other," Guccione tells Details magazine for its September issue. "Sex will always be the dominant factor in any man's life whether he realizes it or not. It's what motivates him to buy the car he drives, the house he lives in, and the clothes and jewelry he wears."
But even Guccione's expertise couldn't have helped him predict the proliferation of pornography that has caused a drop in Penthouse's circulation. The magazine filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week.
"Today, there are triple-X videos, adult channels, and pay-per-view films; there are strip clubs, phone sex, and most of all, Internet sites that have no restrictions," the 72-year-old said. "Attractive women are flooding the porn market in a way that surprises even me."

35 years in the soft-porn business and that's his biggest insight?
To: bedolido
Of course, he has asked all his friends and business associates, and they all agree, right? The lack of depth to this argument is both fascinating and nauseating.

Is this why I am not getting any sex?
Thanks for the insights, Bob.

The magazine filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week. And we are supposed to trust his advice? If he really knew what men wanted, he'd be able to keep his magazine afloat. There are a ton of men's magazines out there that are doing just fine so I think other publishers have a much better grasp of what men want than he does.

Coulter dated Guccione Jr., publisher of SPIN magazine. Son of Penthouse publisher....

To: Question_Assumptions
Guccione knows what men want, just not how to provide it to the marketplace flooded with free net porn. Penthouse was the edgier Playboy.
Playboy publishing also has seen empire crumble. The casinos are all gone, Heff a aging legend and Playboy magazine's is no longer hip.
I for one will never buy porn again!

Arrogant sex? What's that? It's for married couples that when they see each other say "f..." you.

Dear Bob,
No, the reason why you are not getting any sex is because you are sitting at your computer FReeping when you could be out scoring luscious young things.
No charge for the advice.

My point is that a lot of men seem to want men's magazines that have cheesecake but aren't porn. Magazines like Maxim seem to be doing pretty well. But Penthouse is stuck with the idea that men want more explicit pictures of women and it is failing. In other words, men want a lot of things and suggesting that explicit pictures explains what men wants leaves on blind to a lot of other things that men want that a lot of other publishers seem to be having no problems having success with.

True enough, the Playboy/Penthouse mags were once the arbiters of style, that have lost huge to the likes of Maxim, Spy and Details.

Guccione said it himself. Why pay for the explicit stuff in his magazine when it is freely available on the net? His business model must change.
