In politics as in life, second chances are a rare and precious commodity. The opportunity to do something again, with the benefit of wisdom and experience, is something we all seek.
I recently read an inspiring story about Roy Riegels, an All-American center for the University of California (Berkeley) Golden Bears, during the 1929 Rose Bowl. Close to the end of the first half, a Georgia Tech player fumbled the football. Roy scooped it up and bolted towards the goal 65 yards away. There was only one problem. Roy was running toward the wrong goal!
Roy sobbed in the locker room. Coach Nibbs Price put his hand on Roys shoulder and said, "Men, the same team that started the first half will start the second half and that includes you, Roy. The game is only half over."
Riegels was given a second chance. He returned to the game and gave one of the most inspiring individual efforts in Rose Bowl history!
We Californians went the wrong way when we narrowly reelected Gray Davis over Bill Simon in 2002. However, the 2 million Californians who signed Recall petitions have given the rest of us the same kind of opportunity Coach Price gave Roy Riegels: A second chance to elect the right man to lead California.
That man, once again, is Bill Simon!
California needs detailed solutions to serious problems, not just vague generalities and scripted sound bites. We need a governor with real business experience; who knows how to balance a budget and create jobs.
Simon is uniquely qualified to be our governor. During his successful careers in business, charity, and as an Assistant United States Attorney under Rudolph Giuliani, he built a solid reputation for problem solving. We can count on Simon to act decisively, yet always with characteristic warmth, compassion, and good humor.
Simon will solve the budget crisis. To get our fiscal house in order, he pledges to audit every government program, rooting out fraud and inefficiency. He will institute a real hiring freeze (not Davis phony freeze where he hired 11,000 more bureaucrats). He will repeal the tripling of our car fees. And he will fight to pass a constitutional amendment that permanently limits the growth of government to the increase in population and inflation.
Simon believes in the free market system: I want California to stand for limited government and unlimited opportunityand not the other way around. I envision an economy where the brightest minds and the best workers are free to create and innovate, to grow and to prosper. Successful economies reward these people, they dont punish them.
Simon knows that a thriving economy requires outstanding schools. He will fix Californias failing educational system. He will fight for tougher standards, stronger accountability, greater local control, and more parental involvement in our classrooms.
Ronald Reagan once said that American civilization is not a story of cynics or doom criers, but rather, a gallant chronicle of the optimists, the determined people, men and women who dreamed great dreams and dared to try whatever it took to make them come true. Simon is a Reagan-style optimist with a bold vision for a better California.
Simon says, We cant change the past, but we sure can change the future. That is why I believe millions of voters will rally behind Bill Simon in coming weeksinspired by his clear message of hope and opportunity for Californias future.
When we elect Bill Simon on October 7 we will stun the nation. In one day, we will restore the two-party system in California. The positive changes that follow will reenergize the California Republican Party, laying the foundation for future state-wide victories, including the defeat of Barbara Boxer, and even carrying California for President Bush in 2004.
The game is only half over. Let's not waste our second chance: On October 7, let's vote for Bill Simon!
Mike Giorgino is a retired Navy Commander and a Gulf War veteran. He was the Republican candidate for the State Senate, 40th District in 2002. He graduated from the University of San Diego in 2000 and practices law in San Diego. He may be contacted via e-mail at mgiorgino@aol.com or telephone 619-437-8217.
BAAAAAAHHHHHAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Gasping for breath)Oh, man, stop it,(gasp) You're killing me!
Nixon recuperated 6 years after he lost the 1962 race to Pat Brown. Simon will be lucky to come in 4th, among republicans in this race.
Darrell Issa invested almost two million dollars of HIS OWN MONEY to insure that enough signatures were certified in time for an October election.Just after Arnold enterred the race,
Bill Simon sat on the sidelines and watched.
Darrell Issa swallowed his pride, and stepped down - successfully defusing one of the Gray Davis team's biggest issues, that of a "right-wing extremist buying his way into the Governor's office."Bottom line:
Bill Simon has has once again demonstrated his political "tin ear" by jumping into an election in which he can NEVER win, potentially splitting the conservative vote, and causing us to lose the recall election to a RAT.
Darrell Issa is a class act who will live to fight another day, and has earned the respect, admiration and gratitude of MANY conservatives here in California. The ONLY way for Bill Simon to EVER recover from his foolish actions will be to RESIGN from the race, and publicly endorse Arnold as soon as humanly possible, IMHO.Bill Simon may now have PERMANENTLY damaged any hope for political office EVER AGAIN.
Bump to that!
