CITY HALL'S GUN FOLLY
New York Post ^ | 7/28/03 | John R. Lott, Jr.

July 28, 2003 -- After the shooting at city hall on Wednesday, banning citizens with guns from public areas seems more necessary than ever. Yet, many other city halls across the country take a radically different approach. In two neighboring states, Pennsylvania and Vermont, as well as states across the nation from Virginia to Washington, concealed handgun permit holders are allowed to take their guns with them when they attend city council meetings. Gun-free zones may appear like the obvious solution to New Yorkers, but consider an analogy: Suppose a criminal is stalking you or your family. Would you feel safe putting a sign in front of your home saying, "This Home Is a Gun-Free Zone"? Law-abiding citizens might be pleased by such a sign, but to criminals it is an invitation.

Vermont doesn't require a permit.
Anyone can carry if they want to.

Vermont has only one gun law (other than hunting laws) on the books. VT has a law that says it is against the law to carry a firearm with the INTENT to commit a crime. In other words, the guy who wants to protect his family is fine. The idiot who wants to hold up a 7-11 is toast because this is an additional felony added to an armed robbery charge. It is really a common sense law.

That's what I thought Vermont's law was, but John Lott's comment puzzled me;
Surely he knows better?

The laws change so quickly, it's difficult to write an article with such across the board comments. Alaska doesn't require anyone to buy a permit but I don't know what their laws are in entering public buildings. Texas changed their laws last month but I don't think I would try to enter a council meeting unless I had a copy of the current laws in my pocket.

" Didn't know they ahd concealed carry permits in Vermont, though."

They don't, there are no state gun laws, any one without a criminal background can carry a concealed weapon, or an open weapon.

Here in Arizona they have CCP's, but any law abiding citizen can carry a gun openly without a permit. But with the Hitlery clone as gov, that may soon be in doubt.

I'm sure he was just generalizing for the sale of brevity, and with the knowledge that the average NY Post reader can't even conceive of carrying without a permit being legal anywhere.

Probably didn't want to confuse the issue. I read Alaska now has VT style carry.

Let's see, murder is the most serious of felonies, but banning guns would stop murder? Damn! We should have been banning guns, not murder, all these years!

STUPID Liberals!

I was going to mention Texas (only as of 9/1/03, NOT YET!!!), but Shooter beat me to it.

STUPID Liberals!

Please stop insulting stupid people! It isn't their fault that they were born with a lower than average IQ. Liberals, OTOH, have the ability to know better, but choose not to.

BTW, I will add the following to your post:

With what, pray tell, do the Libs think that people were murdered (in far greater proportions than today) prior to the invention of guns? Farking idiots! If a simple law would stop murder and other violent crime, there wouldn't have been ANY crime in ANY place for about the last 5,000 years. Somehow or other, that just never worked out - and Libs have yet to figure out that this is just part of our unchanging human nature. Rather than dealing with our nature as it is, and crafting appropriate policies, they persist in believing that they can change human nature with the stroke of a pen.

I forget who said it, but insanity can be defined as repeating the same action in response to the same stimulus, despite the fact that the person doing so knows from prior experience that it won't work. Passing more laws to stop murders with guns hasn't worked in any society at any time within the last 500 years. However, they keep saying "Just one more law will do it, just one more law...s" Thus, Liberals are insane.

Crooks and killers love gun control. Gun-free-zones are heaven for maniacs bent on mass murder.

It's only amazing to me that liberal sheeple cannot grasp this simple fact.
