An Fred toss a few shotgun shell in with the coalsNever did that. I was too respectful of the damage that I knew they could do.

He did the right thing.I might agree with you if I knew the situation and the area.
Without that knowledge I can't comment more than I did.

As the bandits fled the store, a juvenile who was inside, angry about the incidents, chased the two men into an adjacent field and drew a gun..Just a case of temporary insanity. Just give him a little counseling and release him. Then give him some target practice.

I would've delivered lethal hits on all 3 with my Sig P226 with Winchester Ranger SXT rounds.
Hopefully this guy will be vindicated.

Memories of my home town; I miss the many times I was chased with knives, beaten down, and had guns pulled on me; brings a tear to my eye to know the lads of the
center of the universe are continuing the thread of neglect and abuse that the P-town is renown. Per capita we have the worse employment rate, worst teenage pregnancy, worst pollution, worst drug use (best rate for raw number of crank users and producers), most corrupt police and sheriff, and my favorite the schools rank in the 10 percentile in California which ranks around the 35th in education.
But the girls are easy, which has always brought me home.

I can remember the times when high school boys brought their guns to school in order to get a quick start on hunting after school. Nothing bad seemed to happen in those cases.I was around during those times myself. The good old days.
This article seemed to be about an event in an urban setting. The juvenile was apparently in the store with a concealed weapon when the robbery occurred. Therefore, I would also assume it was a high crime area. I am all for concealed carry and for people protecting themselves. However, if the setting was as I described, and I know I am assuming things not in evidence, it is probably not good for the teens in the area to be walking around armed. Too many hot heads and too little wisdom and patience.

If he has my gun collection he's moving REALLY slowly and if the @#$%^&* killed my dog I just take my time, go next door, borrow my buddy's sniper rifle and CAP that sucker by the time he gets to 500 meters!

" So you're uncomfortable with the police being armed?"If I can't have a gun...they shouldn't either. In fact, my view point is that if the INFANTRY has it...then the people must have it too...but in greater numbers! Everything but crew served. Good help is so hard to find.

"I can remember the times when high school boys brought their guns to school in order to get a quick start on hunting after school."Me too. I remember as late as the 1970's when I was in high school, we used to leave school in the early afternoon to head south and pick up some late afternoon dove hunting. Shotguns in the pickup racks in the school parking lot. No problems and no hassles. Ever.

Did you notice that they did not define "Juvenile"?
Fed. law says18 can have a long gun, 21 to have a handgun - UNLESS the person under 21 has written permission from parents. Some other exceptions might also apply, they did not say if he had the gun on him or retrieved it from his car. Typical sound bite journalism, too few details to draw a valid conclusion.
I always wonder when I read about some "juvenile" being raped or kidnapped, at what age do you gain the right to defend yourself?
When I was a kid I always had a pocket knife, chicken hawks and other filth are nothing new, just better advertised thanks to TV "news".

"The police have no duty to protect individuals"I understand. But, you agree that the police have the authority to shoot a fleeing armed felon. Then what is the justification for the shooting?
To: robertpaulsen
I understand. If you did understand, then you would know that you couldn't sue the police department and win, if they had an opportunity to catch (or, kill) a fleeing armed felon and didn't, and that criminal subsequently harmed you.
But, you agree that the police have the authority to shoot a fleeing armed felon. Then what is the justification for the shooting?
I don't understand your question. The police don't have the obligation to shoot a fleeing armed criminal - it might be on their doughnut break. But, should it happen that they did take the shot, it would certainly be justified, both morally in my opinion and according to the law as I understand it. In my opinion, if it is legal for a cop to kill a fleeing armed suspect, it should also be legal for a civilian to do so. However, the citizen also has no legal obligation to do so, but if he does, he shouldn't be prosecuted for it as the person in this case is. The authority for the shooting in either case is preventing the escape of a known danger to society, the same as prison guards can shoot escapees.
On that note, it would be interesting to see what Kalifornistan would do if a death-row convict escaped from prison, and was then killed by an armed citizen. Would the citizen be charged with murder? Or with firearms violations? The convict was already sentenced to die, and the citizen did what the police had not done, which is remove the threat from society. I would give the citizen a medal, but I suspect Kali would give the guy the jackboot treatment - gotta get those illegal gunz off the streets.

. I am uncomfortable with anyone having the right to fire off a shot in any direction, at any time, in any situation, with any number of people in the path. Do you apply this standard to police as well?

Do you apply this standard to police as well?I am reasonably sure that an officer can get in serious trouble for discharging his weapon and endangering bystanders. Admittedly, the officer may lose his job while the civilian could do time.
We must admit the the officer recieves training as to the appropriate use of his weapon. This teenager probably had not.

If youth were a cop, and the fleeing suspects were killed, it would be ruled a "good shoot."If youth were a cop, and the fleeing suspects were a child in an adjacent house was killed, it would be ruled a "good shoot."

When I was a teenager any kind of ammunition was too hard to come by. We didn't throw any in the fire. I do remember the damage done when a fellow camper put a large can of tomatoes in the fire to heat up. Knocked everything we were trying to cook into the dirt put out the fire and threw hot coals on our gear. While we were in shock and trying to assess the damage the camp clown started running, pointing up and hollering "here come the tomatoes." Memorable Moments in Scouting.
