I now live just about a mile from Kew Gardens. This is the 1st I heard that the Kitty Genovese crime happened there - it was always in my mind some amorphous place in New York City.

Yep, it occurred near Austin Street and the LIRR station.

What also shocked people at the time is that it occurred in a safe, middle class neighborhood.

Kitty Genovese was first attacked behind the street light. The assailant, Winston Moseley, stabbed her twice in the back. Her scream awakened some residents of the Mowbray Apartment House across the street (in back of the photographer). Exactly how many heard Kitty scream is unknown. It was past 3 o'clock in the morning, people were asleep, and windows were shut to keep out the bitter cold.
