Girl Mauled By Dog Released From Hospital 11-Year-Old Won't Lose Arm From Pit Bull Attack Updated: 6:48 p.m. EDT May 18, 2003 DETROIT-- An 11-year-old girl who underwent surgery to save her arm after being mauled by a pit bull Friday has been released from the hospital.

Officials at Detroit Children's Hospital say the surgery was successful, and Diamond Moley's arm won't be amputated.

At the time of the attack, neighbors weren't so sure it could be saved.

They told Local 4 that they had to use pliers to pry the black pit bull's jaws from Moley's arm.

The bite went "all the way to the bone," said Tim Brown, who helped pull the dog off the girl. "Half her arm was hanging off."

"He (the dog) got out. She went to run, he grabbed her," said Brown adding that the pit bull repeatedly shook Moley and slammed her to the ground.

Detroit police declined to comment on the attack.

The dog's owner told Local 4 that she does not have a license for the animal, but stressed that the dog is not aggressive.

The owner said she dove on the dog to try to get him off the girl and was bitten in the process.

Typical irresponsible dog owner - dog half rips kid's arm off and the owner is too selfish and stupid to admit that the dog is agressive. Easy cure - shoot the dog and shoot the owner.

They had to use pliers and that's not an aggressive dog?

If another human being had inflicted this injury, he would be prosecuted for aggravated assault and made to face a posssible five to ten year prison sentence. The owner here ought to be prosecuted for aggravated assault by proxy and sent to prison in place of her beast.

And the beast should be destroyed with out further discussion.

So.... define aggressive.

Maybe..... we don't know enough about what the owner could or should have known about the dog, or the circumstance. It is a good bet that this was not the first incidence of aggression in this dog, and it is a good bet that the girl did nothing to taunt the dog into attacking her, but we still would need to know that.

Pliers? If this would have happened in my city I would have used my 12 guage. My 'pit bull pacifier.'

Funny how these things always seem to involve Pit Bulls or Rottweilers.

You never hear of a Beagle or Golden Retriever trying this sort of thing.

If the dog was not agressive, then how does the idiot owner account for the dog's obvious behavior? Beyond stupid.

HA! Reminds me of the thread about the guitarist from REM consuming 16 glasses of wine during his flight, but claiming he did not drink to "excess" on the aircraft. Some Freeper wrote:

"And excessive would have been, what? 17 glasses?"

Here in Detroit, there is a growing problem with Pit Bull and Rots that are indescriminately bred. Often they are interbred and the owners are unaware.

I have a friend who is a Detroit Police officer and he says its routine to ge a call about an aggressive dog, a cal that end up with the dog dead. Not all "Dog shootings" are reported on the news.

Just last year the police broke up a dog fighting ring. DRive down any residental street in Detroit and you will likely find a pit bull in the yard.

I despise pitbulls and have no sympathy for those who own them. A friend's child was mauled by one a few years ago and a neighbor was walking his pitbull by my house when it broke loose and killed several kittens in front of the kids who had been playing with them. ( He (the dog) was gone when I came out of the house with my rifle). I have a gut reaction every time I see one and have to fight the impulse to run them over or shoot them dead. I'm sure many people believe they are the greatest pets and have them from birth to death, but it is like playing Russian roullette --not just with your family but your neighbors as well.

Cap, long time no see. Your town is fortunate to have you. My regards.

I've seen some very poorly socialized pit bulls. Their owners are terribly irresponsible. Some get a kick out of raising a vicious dog.

Situation like this, little girl and all, use the sidearm in muzzle contact with the top of the head, just forward of the bulge of the skull in back. Shoot straight down if practical, just ahead of where the spine meets the skull. Like a light switch.

Pitbull owners are liars. People own these dogs because of their well-deserved reputation for agressiveness. Ask an owner what they think the dog would do if someone broke into their home, and they will regale you with stats about the agressiveness of pitbulls.
Then, ask them if they are afraid the dog would ever bite a member of the family, you'll typically get a "Why, Phideaux is a gentle, loving dog! He wouldn't hurt a flea!".

As for this case, if tools such as pliers were available, the dog should have been beat to death with something, followed by the owner.

Bad people are most likely to own pitbulls..and rotts...and presas...etc...these are the kinds of dogs bad people want ...because the dogs are most likely to intimidate or attack after a thorough treatment of abuse abandonment and no training or socialization....

socialization is the key and MUST BE DONE EARLY in a dogs life...

Pups need to be exposed to children right off the bat...and put in as many human interaction social situations as possible..

I have taken my shep pups to the grade school and let all the kids play with them who want to..in a supervised setting...I teach the kids how to treat dogs and the dog in turn learns how to act around kids

If dogs are to be left alone...they MUST be in an adequatley fenced in yard...with no way to dig out or climb over..(I have seen shepherds climb an 6 ft fence and had one that could climb a ladder onto a flat garage roof @ ten feet)
