Jersey Could End Bear Market (NJ lawmakers to give animal rights group $95,000 to end hunting)
NY Post | 5/7/03 | Ken Moran

New Jersey lawmakers are considering a measure that would give nearly $100,000 in state funds to the Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest anti-hunting group.

Senate Bill 1219, sponsored by Joseph Vitale (D-Woodbridge), would give $95,000 to HSUS to study ways to eliminate bear hunting in the state. The measure would set a dangerous precedent, allowing animal rights groups to dictate wildlife public policy and using taxpayer dollars for it.

The HSUS opposes hunting, fishing, and trapping and invests its time and money to eradicate such activities.

The bill would also prohibit the hunting of black bears for five years and strip authority from the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife by mandating that only the governor or the legislature could issue permits to take a black bear.

New Jersey sportsmen should plan to attend the Senate Environment Committee hearing on May 15th at 10 a.m. to oppose Senate Bill 1219. Those who cannot attend should contact the committee members and urge them to oppose the funding of animal rights groups with taxpayer dollars. The committee members’ contact numbers are listed on the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Website www.ussportsmen.org. Sportsmen may also visit the site to send messages directly to their legislators.

New Jersey residents may attend a public hearing to discuss the proposed ban on bear hunting, which will be held at the NJ State Museum, 205 W. State Street, Trenton, on May 22nd. Attendees should arrive by 6:30.

I wonder how much campaign money Joseph Vitale (D-Woodbridge) received from HSUS or their leadership?

The more you know about NJ politics, the more The Sopranos looks like a documentary.

oh boy thats just great, so when the bear population explodes and the bears start heading into towns and eating children and garbage the Fish and Game Service will have to cull the population instead of hunters. They will spend tax money to kill bears instead of letting hunters bring $$ to local economies...Greeny-Granolas just dont get it...

What makes it worse is NJ's ongoing budget problems.

It apparently hasn't occurred to anyone black bears could be "protected" with two words : Season Closed.

Meanwhile, back in the less urban areas, the bears are moving in. My son-in-law , who lives near the Delaware River, discovered what looks like a bear den - complete with at least one cub - in his woodlot on Easter Sunday.

A bear attack in Alaska

The following pictures are of a guy who works for the Forest Service in Alaska. He was out deer hunting. A large world record Grizzly charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy unloaded a 7mm Mag Semi-auto into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The monster was still alive so he reloaded and capped it in the head. It was over one thousand six hundred pounds, 12'6" high at the shoulder,14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world. Of course, the game department did not let him keep it. It will be mounted and put on display at the Anchorage airport (to remind tourist's of the risks involved when in the wild).

Think about it. You would be level with the bears belly button when he stood, he would look you in the eye when walking! This bear on its hind legs could walk up to the average single story house and look over the roof at eye level.

The bear had killed 2 other people. His last meal was the poor fellowon a nature hike. The Forest Service found his 38-caliber emptied. He shot6-times and hit the grizzly 4(they found seven 7mm slugs and four 38 caliber slugs in him) but obviously only wounded him since it was estimated to be 3 days prior to the bears death by the Forest Service man.

Holy cow! That' absolutely incredible. What a beast!

Is that a recent news story? If so, it should have its own thread.

I think we're pretty safe in NJ, for now, when it comes to bears that big.

Yea, I think we are for the time being, but I often wonder what would these fanatics do if this area could support a large bear like this and many did populate the state, would they still feel the same about bear hunting? I say yes, they would.

I thought the incident in the Catskills last summer would have changed public thinking--it did not.

My boss was just golfing this weekend in Northwest NJ. He was told that his party could play the 15th hole at their own risk, as a bear and her cubs frequented the woods in that area.

I wish the bears would stay away from the conservative-heavy golf courses and start trolling the hippy music festivals and outdoor craft shows.
