The NEA is the real enemy of America.

The NEA is just another self-centered monopoly union that is determined to protect the above-market wages of its members and their jobs at all cost. They are enemies of America and of real education and liberty in America.

But they aren't half the problem of parents content to hand over their children to be educated in a socialist system instead of insisting on the complete return of their exclusive, God-given authority and responsility to raise their children. It doesn't "take a village" to educate a child, even if that village is called a "public school."

Education reform and tort reform in my opinion are the most important domestic issues needed to strengthen America.

Yes, and tax reform. Tort reform has gone nowhere. The pols are afraid of the teachers unions so that goes nowhere. I'm sincerely beginning to think the GOP is unwilling to act like Republicans.

I think that the NEA et al are all scared to death of the rumblings of the grassroots. Ultimately, like the Berlin wall, they will fall suddenly and dramatically.

It's unfortunate that people don't realize it, but when you have a child who goes to a public school (and you are paying in taxes) you are going to believe anything that the school tells you.

Excellent point. The designers of the system were brilliant. They set it up this way. The taxeaters get the money from the taxpayers first, then give a "free lunch" education in return. Parents fall into the trap, gobbling spoiled food they have already paid for. Because they have already paid, whenever they get a whiff of rot, they hold their nose and keep munching, because they think they don't have money left over for any alternative.

Vouchers are little more than a longer menu in what remains the government cafeteria.

60 Minutes did a story last night on the NYC schools and how King Bloomberg was trying to effect change.

The word "union" and the havoc teachers unions have wrought on children wasn't mentioned once.

Model UN Program
Model UN Programs are a great way for students of all ages to learn about international relations and to gain a better sense of what a varied and fascinating world we live in. They also are a perfect "hands on" way to gain experience with basic skills -- such as communication, negotiation tactics, and conflict prevention -- that we all need in our day-to-day lives.

We at the U.S. Department of State are striving to become a more active and valuable member of the decentralized network of students, teachers, civic organizations, and individual activists who make up the Model UN community in the United States.

The Bureau of International Organization Affairs, in cooperation with U.S. diplomatic missions to the UN and its agencies, develops and implements U.S. policy in the United Nations. We are also the focal point for much of the State Department's involvement in Model UN programs. In particular, we are working alongside the United Nations Foundation and local schools to put State Department volunteers into high school classrooms in a number of DC schools each week to help organize twice-yearly Model UN conferences.

Beyond our partnership with local high schools, we also at times can help with speakers and information on foreign policy issues. Below are a few documents and links that might be useful for some Model UN participants.

United Nations is so over powering America

Thanks for posting the link to the International Baccalaureate program. It's much more rigorous than the Advanced Placement program and has the further advantage of being recognized by universities around the world. It doesn't solve the program of government schools by itself, of course, but it is a shining example of one of many possibilities for excellence outside of state control.

Stop the socialization PC nonsense and give the kids a rigorous academic program.

The good thing to come out of this: today's poorly prepared college students will definitely think twice about poor public school education for their children. They'll either demand that changes be made or they'll abandon it.

I never hear a definition of EDUCATION!

What is it we are trying to accomplish with the spending of 100's of BILLIONs of dollars over the last 30 years?

It seems to me that the definition of EDUCATION should be a threshold issue! I would like to hear from some FReepers on their definition (50 words or less)!
