Over 80 dead in rioting and looting, as ethnic gangs clash amid anarchy. Fires burn in business districts, storefronts destroyed, hooligans make off with any loot they can carry.
Our liberal friends might cite this example to support their claim that we are becoming embroiled in a quagmire in Iraq. Unfortunately, this is not Iraq at all, It is Los Angeles after the verdict in the Rodney King trial.
The naysayers will spout that we will never establish order in Iraq and will tell us that the whole operation was a mistake. Please remind them that killing, looting, and lawlessness existed in Los Angeles, perhaps we should have pulled out of there, too.
It is also illuminating to recall history after major wars. There was looting in Paris after World War Two, there was anarchy in the former Soviet Union following the fall of the Iron Curtain, and we are still seeing the results of the breakup and liberation of former Yugoslav republics.
There is little doubt that winning the peace will be more difficult than winning the war and that we will certainly have our work cut out for us, but that in no way should diminish our idealism and our desire for a truly free and just Iraq.
Donating to the FreeRepublic will keep the bright beacon of Freedom shining so that our Troops and the world will know we stand with them. |
