Prisoners taken by Iraqis were aid drivers - UK

LONDON, March 27 (Reuters) - Two men held by Iraq and paraded on al-Jazeera television are truck drivers contracted to the British army to deliver food aid to Iraqi prisoners of war, the Ministry of Defence said on Thursday.

"The two men are civilian subcontractors delivering food to Iraqi PoWs. They are drivers," a ministry spokesman told Reuters. "They should be treated as prisoners of war in their own right."

The spokesman said the mens' employers had been informed and they were getting in touch with their relatives. He declined to give any further details, including the men's nationality.

I guess it is proof that the military planners did not expect a hard fight?

This article (click on the above link) mentions two black men who were shown on TV as "hostages", one in his 40's and one with dreadlocks. Maybe these two are the civilian aidworkers mentioned here.

Aha! Thanks! (I was wondering yesterday).....

" I watched this video in full just a few hours ago. On al Jazeera, alright. The description above is accurate. It was most bloody and gory. It brought memories of the US POWs executed on Sunday, and their bodies being mishandled and videotaped. Further, there was short video of two Black men, alive, said to be POWs. Yet, a) these two men were NOT in uniform but were in western garb; b) they did not look as concerned as the American POWs the other day; c) one man had long hair. In fact his hair was in so-called 'dredlocks'. This was NOT a military haircut. And finally, d) the second black man to me did not look like an American African-American, but looked particulary AFRICAN black to me. Perhaps central African or Nigerian, Sudanese? I wonder if Iraq is not getting Africans to pose as captured Coalition personnel....or just WHO these captives were?" -- Posted by AmericanInTokyo to Lunatic Fringe On News/Activism 03/26/2003 11:38 PM EST #19 of 52 "

Where's Koki Nana? Sounds like an emergency meeting of the UN should be held on this subject....wonder if he rolls his eyes at this info! My thoughts and prayers for these two men as well.

"one with dreadlocks"

I noticed that. I know the Brits are a little more lax about haircuts than some of our units, but dreads did seem excessive.
