The first transistors I worked with were placed inside little light-tight metal cases, one transistor per case. The the one transistor was mounted to a circuit board about 3 inches across. Then several of these boards were attached to a larger circuit board which were in turn plugged or wired into a massive cable. The transistors were in light-tight cases because they were sensitive to light. They could have been the open or inside clear cases, same difference, they would not work as intended.

Well, there sure aren't many. I found a few without the border, but I could do the same thing with the BR tag. Didn't find many with the border.
