PARIS, March 22 (KUNA) -- France is sending to Qatar a specialized military unit designed to protect against an attack by mass destruction weapons and to treat contamination from biological, chemical or nuclear bombs, the French Defense Ministry said in a statement on Saturday. The force is being sent at the request of Qatar and is designed "to protect the territory and population." Qatar invoked a defense cooperation agreement to make the request for the specialized protection. Last week, French Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie held talks with Qatar officials in Doha and expressed French solidarity with the countries of the Gulf with which France has defense agreements. As well as Qatar, agreements were also signed in the 1990s with Kuwait, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. France said that the specialized unit would leave by air Saturday for Qatar.
