Former Iraqi army Brig. Gen. Tawfiq Al-Yasiri told an opposition Kurdish newspaper last week that, "It is possible that with the start of U.S. air and missile strikes, the central government might lose control to command its bodies and over the Iraqi streets," he said.
"The information we received from the regions, which are under the Iraqi control, suggest that under such circumstances, some commanders in some military units, who are against the government, intend to operate along with the opposition and participate in the process of the Iraqi regime change. These commanders will take advantage of the right opportunity to carry out a military coup."
Al Yasiri also said the coup could take place before U.S. action.
It is also possible that Saddam could be killed by a close aide seeking to curry favor with the opposition and gain a top position in a successor government.
This can be dangerous for us, moreso now. Think about it, when a paranoid with a weapon suddenly realized that they are out to get him, he often strikes first.
Now this two-bit dictator reads this and knows he cannot trust anyone, maybe even his own sons, and who knows what could happen. Further, it means that he could likely cut off all direct communication with his henchmen, making it more difficult to track him down.
;-)
By us? By an Iraqi?
The Mussolini scenario may play out here.

I read it this way as well. Saddam doesn't trust one of his boys around hime with a gun at all. Has the punk searched before letting him close. Can't remember which one.... they are both awful! ( Must be genetic! ) Saddam also makes it a point to kill anyone who starts looking twitchy. Apparently coups have been tried in teh past... one of his sons-in-law tried. He's dead now.
The iraqi army does not strikeme as one where initiative is a virtue...pity.

And more difficult to issue doomsday orders.
Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it, you U.N., French, German, and Demorat ba$tard$!!
A. The U.N. sent inspectors into Iraq to find weapons of mass destruction - the same WMD Saddamn said he did not have. Forming new alliances, France, Germany, and Belgium, continually sought prolonged inspection times in their attempts to restrain the U.S. and Britian from attacking Saddam. The U.N. Council repeatedly ruled in thir favor.
B. Saddamn, while insisting (and convincing France, Germany, and Belgium) he had no WMD, at the same time threatened the U.S. and Britian to destroy them (WITH THE SAME WMD HE CLAIMED NOT TO HAVE) if they attacked Iraq.
C. The United States and Britian agreed that Saddamn had not complied with U.N. resolution 1440, had WMD, then attacked and removed Saddamn from power to prevent him (or other terrorists) from using them.
D. After the U.S. and Britian attacked Iraq, vast stores of WMD, chemical, biological, and yes - even some nuclear - were uncovered by the prevailing U.S. and British forces.
E. Saddamn and his two sons were tried before a U.N. tribunal and unaimously found to be enemies of minkind perptetuating mass murders on their own people of magnitudes and ferociouceness not seen since Adolph Hitler's actions created the word "genocide." They were summarily hung for their crimes against humanity. Regrettably the knots where incorrectly tied and the distance of the drop was not sufficient to break their necks. They swung and kicked for almost thirty minutes before strangling to their infamous historical deaths.
F. The Democrats in the United States had their worst election returns in the 2004 elections in that party's history.
G. George W. Bush was elected president for a second term in 2004 by the largest landslide in U.S. history.
H. Ditto for Tony Blair.
I. Hillary Clinton was defeated for his (grin) bid for reelection in New York State.
J. Thanks to the "footdragging" tactics of France and Germany througout the entire world crisis, the United Nations was made to be a laughing stock of historical proportions and was deemed irrelevent and impotent and consequently vaporized into nothingness as did it's predecessor - The League of Nations.
Viva La France - French Military History in a Nutshell (Including *WAR ON TERRORISM*)

To illustrate this point, let me tell you a story:
From 1939 to 1944, the Wehrmacht fought all over the continent of Europe for Hitler, for his dreams, and for his ambitions. During that time, once war had begun, most of the German officer corps wouldn't have dreamed of a coup in Berlin. They had taken a personal oath of loyalty to Adolph Hitler, and the last thing a German Officer would do is violate his loyalty oath. However, there were exceptions.
There was a small group led by Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, head of the Abwehr, who were doing whatever they could to upend the Hitler regime.
Canaris himself was godfather to a small group of officers in Berlin and Paris known as the Kreisau Circle. One of the leaders of the Circle was a bright young Eastern Front veteran, Col. Klaus Schenck von Stauffenberg.
He would be the officer who would deliver the suitcase containing the bomb to Hitler's headquarters in Rastenberg, East Prussia.
The bomb failed to kill Hitler, of course, and the plot collapsed. But understand that even during the period after Stalingrad, Germany's greatest military disaster, thoughts of a coup against Hitler were limited to a small circle of officers, mostly monarchists and men with socialist leanings. The moral of the story is rather simple: Saddam is much more aware of his "internal traitors" than Hitler ever was, and he moves as quickly as he can to liquidate his opponents. The Iraqi Army officer corps certainly doesn't have the initiative and drive of its German counterpart. These are not the kind of people who could bring off a coup.
It's a pipe dream to expect a coup. Anyone with any initiative in that army has been killed off by the Mukhabarat over the past ten years. Especially these poor fellas....

You know, I trusted these two guys behind me since the Old Days, I really did. I thought they were my friends. Now I find that they forgot to feed my cats....
Be Seeing You,
Chris
You forgot one line here:
And the result was the END of the Democratic party.
We had a German foreign-exchange student live with us for a year. His grandfather was a Colonel and an ace in the Luftwaffe.
This man was proud to pass on to his children the fact that he participated in this assassination attempt.
Get this: This same German Luftwaffe Colonel actually served as a bodyguard to Hitler at Eagle's Nest. (Only the top Luftwaffe and Nazi Germany Heer (Army) heroes were allowd to "watch over" Hitler.)
Saddamn (and his impersonators) have gotta have a "pucker factor" going through the (anal) roof about right now?
WHAT IF: One of his impersonators defected - BWWAAAHHAAA!
1999 Deja Vu?
Let's hope and pray we don't have a repeat of 2000!
This word needs to get out to all Republicans (no time to spare).
Regime change means we get rid of the second, third, fourth, etc. levels of the regime until we're down to the bone. If the infrastructure stays, we haven't changed a thing.
Having had a little personal experience with Middle East military organizations I can guarantee that Iraq's 'Generals' are already multi-milionaires. Their concern right now is whether or not they are going to get to spend any of their hoard. I suspect none of them are sleeping well these days worrying about that.
This will give everyone what the need!
The no war crowd, the peaceniks, the French, the Russians, the anti-Americans, the Libs / Rats and even the Americans.
What is the plan?
How do we solve the Saddam mess without war?
Simple.......
Saddam needs to leave Iraq, and everyone except Saddam agrees.
How to get Saddam on board with the plan to leave?
We need a plan of up and out.
Simple, allow him to run another country.
We allow Saddam to be the ruler of France.
Everyone gets what they need, especially France.
Va La France!!!
To save the destruction of his homeland and the lives of potentially thousands of his soldiers would be a pretty good motivational factor. While I agree that any officers with initiative to conduct a coup have long been disposed of, there are a lot of officers who cannot stand Hussein. And Hussein is putting them in the position of watching their country, their colleagues and their families be destroyed, just because of his maniacal ego. A U.S. attack, or simply a strong show of force, may be just the catalyst needed to end this tyrannical regime.
I constantly pray for this to occur.
Well, there is a risk for some Iraqi officers if they decide to wait for the Americans to do it. If the Iraqi officer in questions happens to be serving with a Republican Guard outfit near Kirkuk, the risk is known as MOAB. And that's a big risk in my book.
Not if he keeps working for tax cuts. The father's tax increase is what killed him.
I was hoping it would be the other way around - but alas - Saddamn is a coward!
....and some would have us believe that Saddam has equipped every third Iraqi with a machine gun. Yeah right.
I sure hope not! Despite the fact that they may try for Saddam's chittlins, they may not be one of the "Good Guys"! Retire them and their families to a nice place wher they cannot meddle, i say!

And, under 'SH'.......France can be made the NEW 'PA' state! (Their very own country!!!)

Lt. Col. Wilhelm HeinzOfficer in World War I. Later joins the Freikorps and the SA. Expelled from the Nazi Party.
An early conspirator, Heinz is deeply involved in the 1938 and 1939 coup attempts. He was to have led a commando raid on Hitler's Chancellory on both occasions. He carefully puts together an assault force of 50 trusted commandos, and assumes responsibility for planning and leading the raid which was to have taken place at the height of the Czech-Sudetenland crisis.
As Europe holds its breath in late September 1938, wondering whether Britain and France will threaten military action to defend Czechoslovakia, Major Heinz and his 50 commandos are hidden in safehouses in Berlin armed and ready to storm the Chancellery at a given signal from their co-conspirators in the Army High Command. But British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's decision to agree to Hitler's terms in Munich torpedoes the coup. ...

Major-General Henning von Tresckow"The assassination must be attempted at all costs. Even if it should not succeed, an attempt to seize power in Berlin must be made. What matters now is no longer the practical purpose of the coup, but to prove to the world and for the records of history that the men of the resistance dared to take the decisive step. Compared to this objective, nothing else is of consequence." - Major-General Henning von Tresckow
Tresckow leads the conspiracy throughout early and mid-1943 until Stauffenberg takes over from him in October. Tresckow is the mastermind of the elaborately planned but unsuccessful March 13, 1943 assassination attempt when Hitler visits Army Group Center headquarters in Smolensk. Undeterred, he plans the Berlin Armory attempt one week later. ...
Caught up in the disastrous war on the eastern front, Tresckow tries repeatedly to apply for a position that will put him within striking distance of Hitler, but all his attempts fail. Upon learning of the July 20th coup failure, he walks out into no man's land the following day and commits suicide by detonating a grenade next to his head.
"Now they will all fall upon us and cover us with abuse. But I am convinced now as much as ever, that we have done the right thing. I believe Hitler to be the archenemy, not only of Germany, but of the entire world. In a few hours' time, I shall stand before God and answer for both my actions and the things I neglected to do. I think I can with a clear conscience stand by all I have done in the battle against Hitler.Just as God once promised Abraham that He would spare Sodom if only ten just men could be found in the city, I also have reason to hope that, for our sake, he will not destroy Germany. No one among us can complain about his death, for whoever joined our ranks put on the shirt of Nessus. A man's moral worth is established only at the point where he is ready to give up his life in defense of his convictions." - Henning von Tresckow
