A Liberal backbench MP has apologized for a remark she made about the United States. Carolyn Parrish was responding to reporters' questions when she was heard saying "Damn Americans."
The Toronto-area Liberal MP, who is staunchly opposed to war in Iraq, had been commenting about her frustration with the American rejection of Canada's efforts to bring another UN resolution against Iraq.
As she finished a scrum with reporters outside the House of Commons, she quietly said "Damn Americans" to a nearby reporter. A nearby camera operator filmed Parrish making the remark, then smiling.
As she walked away a few seconds later after the cameras were turned off, she was heard saying "I hate those bastards." That part wasn't caught on video.
Within a few hours, Parrish apologized.
"My comments do not reflect my personal opinion of the American people and they certainly do not reflect the views of the government of Canada."
She added: "I have developed a new respect for boom microphones."
Alliance Leader Stephen Harper says the apparently off-hand comment likely won't hurt Canada's relationship with the U.S. But he adds the repetition of anti-American remarks from people in government doesn't do anyone good.
When asked about the comment, Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham refused to respond, saying he hadn't heard it himself. But he added that members of Parliament must answer to their constituents for their actions.
Parrish is one of a number of Liberal MPs who don't want Canada to support a war in Iraq unless it's backed by the UN.
Last November, Prime Minister Jean Chretien's communications director Francoise Ducros was forced to step aside, a week after she was heard remarking that U.S. President George Bush was a "moron."

She reflects what we all know. The "I don't hate Americans, I just don't like your President Bush" blather is a lie.
The world hates Americans as individuals. They hate every single mom, dad, child, man, woman, student, worker, every American in whatever capacity. I saw this overseas.
The hatred is not because of who we are. It is because of what we represent: Absolute Freedom in a world of totalitarian forces.
I may have fits about a guy dressed as a woman on a school field trip. I may just get ripped about the pro-pot movement. I may be ticked off at protestors for every single belief and forum. But, we have that right.
I can also start my own business without the massive government intrusion as in Germany or France or the rest of Europe. I can own my own house. It is still affordable. I can practice my religion openly unlike the Middle East. Yeah, we have restrictions, but really, I'm not likely to be killed in the US for my beliefs, and neither are you.
The jealousy is so extreme out there, it is irrational. This Canadian just stated the obvious.
Face it, we are the Labrador retrievers in a world of wolves.

But he added that members of Parliament must answer to their constituents for their actions. These comments will probably not hurt the The Toronto-area Liberal MP at all. I dare say that her district agrees with her.
It is a good thing that GWB does not care about such partisan sniping, or it would make it impossible for the US to deal with real threats. If the President is ruled by polls, then public opinion becomes the most vulnerable component of our military machine. If an enemy cannot defeat us in the field, he only need defeat us on the Op/Ed page of The New York Times.
But GWB doesn't play the game that way. Buh-Bye Saddam!

From your link:
"The only country that's not on the side of Palestine is the United States of America, she [Ms Parrish] said. Perhaps that's because the United States of America is not on the side of islamist terrorist groups who strap bombs on the backs of teenagers and send them into shopping malls with orders to kill as many Jews as possible.

This is as usual for a liberal a Scarlett O'Hara apology. Not really sorry just sorry she got caught...the boom mike quote is the obvious giveaway. About as sincere as a hooker's smile. If she was a conservative she'd be up against hate speech charges by now.

Listen to what she said as reported in The Globe & Mail:
When first asked by The Globe and Mail about the comment, Ms. Parrish said it had not been intended for publication.
"If you use it, don't bother calling here again," she said of her comment, which was made in public and caught by TV cameras.
She added that she would work to restrict the access that journalists have in Parliament if the comment were reported. "If you guys want to keep the privilege of working in that area without being held back, I would be very careful with this one."
So she would restrict freedom of the press???

Makes me embarassed that I still have my citizenship in this country. I swear to God, moving to Texas was the best move I ever made.
A lot of Canadians like to say that this rabid anti-Americanism is isolated to the Liberal and NDP parties, and a few other left-wing nutjobs. Sadly, it's a lot more widespread than that. I guess if you read the Toronto Star and watch the CBC for long enough, you might start believing it.

Check out the CBC site. They have the original video with the MP (or is that PMS?) calling us bastards. You can find it at:
http://cbc.ca/stories/2003/02/26/bastards030226
Everything is on the video from "Damn Americans" to "I hate those ba$ards."
Also, take a look at the discussion board regarding our ba$tardness on the CBC site. It's interesting. Some really great Canadians and a few Canadian ba$tards.
Regarding the apology, "My comments do not reflect my personal opinion of the American people..." What exactly were the comments supposed to reflect if not personal opinion? I can only assume that the reporters missed the ventriloquist with his hand up her back.

One of the most ardent supporters of the War on Iraq is Tim Rollins, a columnist based in Canada. He, and several others (particularly writers at Enter Stage Right and American Partisan), are waving the American flag and cheering us on.
Don't boycott all of Canada because of a few fruit loops.
To: Oldeconomybuyer
I agree, add Canada to the boycott list. I'm sick of these nations who's butt we've saved numerous times turning on us and doing it with my hard-earned-taken-at-gunpoint-er,via the IRS-tax dollars. All of these nations can kiss my tuckus. The Axis of Weasal grows daily. And it just shows that despite my personal thought to remain an open and free nation of the world, I am thinking quite seriously about the benefits of closing the borders and bringing every troop, everywhere, back home. Along with our industry and our dollars. The hell with the rest of the world.

Yes I agree, but GWB is human, he is like you and me and he hurts when people hates him for no reason. President Bush needs our prayers, and expression of support. This man carries a tremendously heavy burn. May he continue to hold the course in the face of the storm the evil liberals are causing.
To: Oldeconomybuyer
Canada: "Damn Americans. I hate those bastards" - Liberal MP I have just had an epiphany. All has suddenly become very, very clear.
Carolyn Parrish was not speaking as a Canadian.
Instead, she was speaking as a liberal!
Consider that the quote -- "Damn Americans. I hate those bastards" -- could have come from any liberal, in any country. Including the U.S.
Ms. Parrish has expressed her vitriol honestly because, as a liberal, she is congenitally anti-American.
There isn't a dime's worth of difference between Ms. Parrish and Jacque Chirac. Or Gearhardt Schroeder. Or Tom Daschle...
To be anti-American is to be a pure and true liberal.

It took 43 posts and I think you're the first to score. And you even know it, congrats!
I don't blame one single angry American bastard on this though. Similarily, the few clear thinking Canadians left here are popping gaskets over this.
I think you are bang-on with your nutshell analogy. Liberals are certainly anti-American, and our's might be out of control. You saw how your Libs poisoned your last federal election.
Bush must be re-elected in 2004, our it all goes down the tubes. As for us, we'll hopefully follow suit......if not, send help.
To: okie01
I agree with your epiphany up to, but not including the last name - Tom Daschle. To be sure, there are a few members of congress that are anti-American (Barbara Lee, Bernie Sanders, Cynthia McKinney, etc.) but Tommy is just a partisan political hack. He loves his country, but loves his RAT party more.
To: Beck_isright
Canada is a strong ally of the US and has many pro-American citizens. They have simply fallen into the same "feel good" socialist trap that many EU countries have and will see the negative impact of a bloated central government over the coming years. Canada will ultimately get it right and shift back to a private sector economy, but it will likely be painful to watch.
To: Oldeconomybuyer
Sounds like hate speech to me. I thought Canada had laws against that. Stupid, ugly morons must be exempt, I guess.
To: BikerTrash
This arrogant Liberal piece of garbage in noway speaks for the majority of Canadians. The Liberal party is voted in by the ethnic vote and freedom loving Canadians are being sold down the river in favor of a huge muslim immigration conspiracy to keep getting themselves voted in. I and many Canadians have never felt so ashamed for our once proud country.
