So you believe that the reson that the genre will last is that the events are barely scrpited or rehearsed and that no one will ever catch on to the con?

Here's how the Democrats can get exposure, evade campaign finance laws and whittle down the field of candidates all at the same time.

They can get their bosom buddies at ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN/PBS to invent a reality series called "Who Wants To Be President?" Take some schlockey washed-up has-been (Gary Hart?) to host the show and each week the candidates must live in a big mansion with a bunch of hidden cameras while they make policy statements to each other.

They'll also have contests where certain advantages can be won, such as "Special Interest Group For The Week". One week, they'll have to shovel horsesh*t as the contestants did on "Joe Millionaire". The next week, they might have to eat rats like they did on "Survivor".

Candidates, er contestants, will be able to sneak interns in and out of the mansion in order to spice up the ratings.

Viewers can go on-line to vote one candidate out of the mansion each week. Given the field of candidates, I'm sure it could last an entire 13-week season.

And by the time it's over, we'll find out more about these candidates than we ever really wanted to know...

I always thought of gays as flamboyant. Joe is incredibly stereotypically rock-headed and not flamboyant at all.

That's because it is the flamboyant ones that are imediately noticable. The others are under the radar.

HBO already stole your idea.

They are going to run (and fund) a 3rd party candidate after TV vote chooses a candidate..

Still looking for em, I suspect the tabloids are saving that for the cover shot tomorrow.

But I want to find out which candidate is desperate enough to stay on the show that he'll try to hit on Carol Mostly-Wrong.

Does a butter have the authority to throw parties?

Perhaps Paul got fired because he would overspend on his budget.

Which tells me the entertainment press isn't doing a very good job and Rupert is having to leak stuff. It's a shame really, if the press was doing they're stuff we could have learned a lot more stuff.
This is a win-win situation for the reality TV shows and the entertainment press. Do you really think the tabloids are going to "tell all" in one issue? Just as "Joe Millionaire" stretches out the storyline to milk the ratings, the tabs stretch out the "shocking details" over a bunch of issues to sell more copies. The press is doing their stuff in this case, whether Murdoch is leaking it or not, because their "stuff" is to get people to buy their product, not to report the news.

Almost, I believe it will last because the plots are vastly different than anything you could do in "straight" TV, and nobody really cares about "the con". It was revealed a long time ago that most of the participants are struggling actors and that the producers generally have more control over the situation than is revealed in the show, no con. It's jsut part of the genre, pick a reality show (one that I watch at least) and I can tell you about some tweaking that's done off camera. We're seeing that Joe Millionaire was all about the dirty little secrets. Junkyard Wars admitted long ago that they seed the junkyard (they also de-seed so the contestants will have to fabricate or juryrig something) and that they play a little loose with the 10 hours. It's been very well documented that Trading Spaces has helpers never on camera. The last 5 minutes of Monster Garage is always staged (and kind of hokey, I wish they'd drop it, it's cool to see the thing in action but the "competition" is stupid). Nobody cares, the shows succeed because no matter how you slice it they're less scripted than normal TV which makes them more interesting and more capable of suprising the audience.

Fox beat you to it. Word is that in 04 they'll select a candidate via reality TV (similar to American Idol in this case) and run him as a third party guy.

But there was some evidence in the 'Survivor' lawsuits that the producers were actually deciding who would move forward in the game..

True. They just want as many eyeballs as they can attract. Nothing more. Really, how can anybody be surprised that these are all models and actresses, many of whom have a history of at least soft-core porn in their backgrounds? How do you think they knew to show up at the auditions?

Well when you decide to have a party the butler will be doing all the work, but it generally isn't his decision. They probably just didn't realize what they were getting, as I said for ME he'd be a fine butler, other people might be looking for somebody different.

That has got to violate so many campaign finance rules it isnt even funny.

Unless FOX or HBO sets up a 1-900 line for a candidate to get 'donations from the people'
