Anyone think Rahm Emmanuel will dare to comment on this outrage.

If he's not affiliated with the school in any capacity, why is he writing to them? And why would the editors broadcast his views?...I'm sure there are folks who agree with the "letter", but there's something fishy about it. I'd agree, I don't see why they'd be printing an outside opinion from a no-one. Note the article in 37, they relented and printed the David Horowitz ad because of his reputation, though I'd guess that wasn't enough for free publicity.
Who on earth is Ariel Sinovsky? This could only be printed based on an appreciation of his view by the faculty.

Not Rahm's district. But feel free to write Governor Rod.

I have a question...how did something THIS BADLY WRITTEN (grammar, spelling, et cetera) make it through the editorial pipe without any effort to clean it up?

Jews manipulate America
Why should they be any different than any other ethnic group? You might as well write "Rich people manipulate America", "Blacks manipulate America", "Gays manipulate America", "Republicans manipulate America", ad nauseum, ad infinitum.
Yawn. Another truism masqerading as profound wisdom.

Look, the Chancellor weighed in. Shes appalled over this mischaracterization of Arabs and Jews. Maybe she should just pay attention to what the newspaper prints if this has been such a problem.
From the Chancellor
Like many on this campus I have heard from today, I am appalled at the hateful and polarizing views put forward in a letter from a Seattle resident to Wednesday's Daily Illini. I have been asked for my response. It is the same as it was to the ads that appeared before the break. Hate speech is hate speech. It is designed to drive a wedge between people.
As we were all horrified by the mischaracterization of Americans around Sept. 11, we should be equally appalled at group-based generalizations about Arabs and Jews, Israelis and Palestinians. Ascribing hateful attributes to a group has been at the root of some of the worst atrocities in the history of the world. Wednesday's letter plays upon prejudices, demonizing millions of individuals. .
When hateful speech enters the marketplace, its goal is to cut off thoughtful debate. .
I urge members of the University community to continue to respond to these outpourings of bigotry as members of a university should, through vigorous but civil debate and intergroup dialogue. .
Our emphasis in these precarious times ought to be on how we come together to solve vexing social problems, remembering that we are all one people. .

Chancellor

I think part of the problem is that these kids have been raised by their parents and teachers to believe that being judgemental is the worst possible sin imaginable. From there, you sort of slide into the belief that everyone, no matter how bigoted or stupid or feckless they are, has a right to be heard, because it would be wrong for them to judge it as worthless and not deserving of space in their paper.
Which is completely wrongheaded - this fool has a right to speak, but he assuredly does not have the right to be heard, nor does he have a right to any particular forum for his views.

Clealy the editors and faculty supervisors liked the content enough to overlook the quality of the writing.

Not being his district is NO excuse at all. He ought to speak out. It's his state and he's jewish.

If they did, no one took pictures.
In reading the comments at the paper I noted in one from an asst prof. of history that the bold face headline Jews manipulate America was the invention of the papers editor, not the letters author. He suggested "Anti-Semite Lives in Seattle and Advocates Firing Jews from Government" as more apt.

I'd certainly agree. I'd expect all public officials in Illinois to speak out. I'll let you know if I hear one.

To stop anti-American terrorism, give the Gaza Strip, together with the West Bank, to Israel and buy the fake Kingdom of Jordan for a Palestinian state. Then in a couple of years the Israel-provoked terrorism will be a thing of the past. Will it stop all terrorism? Probably not Better to keep silent and be thought an idiot than to put pen to paper and prove it.

You know this kid's a leftist, Palestinian apologist, but if this ever makes it into the media he will magically become an extreme right winger. Some news editor in Oregon will probably announce in print that this article was found on a conservative website where posters claim to be proud members of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy...

That is very intelligent argument.
