NOT in my tribe! I'm (currently) redhead (but come from a long line of natural reds!) and I'm a Celt (to my fibre). There ain't NO German in THESE O'Connor veins!!!!

The gene for red hair has, evidently, been around for a long time. It is probably older than those for black, blonde, brown, and other hair colors.

The is a considerable argument whether Neanderthal Man was in the Sapiens line. So it is hard to say the red-head gene dates to Neandethals. Maybe it predates both the Sapiens and Neanderthal lines, as evidenced by Pongo pygmaeus, the "Wild Man of Borneo" (the Orang Utan).

There are SO many redheads in my family, it's like we don't understand any other colour! *LOL* So I can understand THIS statistic. BTW, is it any coincidence that the high percentage of redheads being Scots and Irish, could also lend itself to the theory that redheads are 'fiesty'? ;-)

In it, Jordan proposes that the Neanderthal didn't exactly die out, but was assimilated into the homo-sapient spieces. Food for thought.

"Redheadedness" is common in several ethnicities. Besides the Scots-Irish connection you mentioned, and the reference to Germanic tribes, you can add the area of Galacia, northwest Spain. The freckled redheads of Galacia may be due, in part, to a gene poll which included Celtic wayfarers from centuries past.
