Aggie dorm under fire for planning offensive party
By The Associated Press (1/17/03 - COLLEGE STATION, Texas) -- Texas A&M University dormitory residents' plans to observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with a "ghetto party" were canceled after school officials learned of the event.
Fliers at Walton Hall advertised the off-campus event, at which participants were to mimic stereotypes.
Ron Sasse, director of A&M's department of residence life, said the event would have portrayed negative black stereotypes.
"We're just having a hard time trying to understand why people would think this would be OK," Sasse told The Bryan-College Station Eagle in Friday's editions.
Sasse said he learned of the event from a note sent anonymously to his office. The note indicated that similar activities had been staged several times over the years.
The university is investigating whether university or dorm rules were violated. The investigation is focusing on Walton Hall advisers and the dorm's student organization. However, dorm officials said that dorm staff had no role in planning the off-campus party.
Walton resident Akeal Hawkins, an 18-year-old black freshman, said he was offended that fellow Aggies would throw such a party on the national holiday to commemorate the slain civil rights leader.
"I didn't expect this from Texas A&M at all," he said. "You think that this campus is like family."
Greg Hodges, a 21-year-old white senior, said he did not find the party idea offensive as long as nothing "serious" happened.
"This was just meant to be done in good humor," he said.
