(GREENLAND) Coalition collapses after visit from the exorcist

A purification ceremony by a traditional Inuit healer at a Greenland government office led yesterday to the collapse of the ruling coalition.

Jens Lyberth, the island's senior civil servant and a member of the Simiut party, called in the healer to drive evil spirits from the premises before moving in.

The pro-independence Inuit Brotherhood (IA), junior partner with Simiut in the coalition formed after last month's elections, said the "barbaric" ceremony made Greenland a laughing-stock.

Mr Lyberth resigned but Josef Motzfeldt, the deputy premier and head of the IA, accused the island's premier, Hans Enoksen, of favouritism over the appointment.

He contacted the opposition Democrat Party with a view to forming a new coalition, prompting Mr Enoksen to dissolve the present pact.

The question of the day is, would a similar ceremony carried out in Washington cause all the Democrats to burst into flames?
