Great post.

As opposed to the momzer who was in charge before Bush was elected. Or the schlemiel who ran against him in 2000.

Yiddish is a German dialect written in Hebrew characters, and containing some borrowing from Hebrew and Slavic tongues, the former mostly on religious terms and words.
"Mensch" means a human being, whether male or female, in German -- as opposed to Mann, which just means "man"=male adult.

A "momzer"="Bastard", technically refers only to someone whose mother was married, but not to the father of the momzer.
A "schlemiel" might be translated by the English word "prick."

BTW, "Yiddish" is just how a Yiddish speaker pronounces the German word "Juedisch," meaning "Jewish."
"Shmendrek" would appear to mean "fat shit."

Be that as it may, I've read a lot of Jewish novelists, and when someone was called a momzer, it was meant in a very derogatory way.

Dumb question: Why are two candles missing on the menorah?

I think custom is that they light one candle every day?
To: wife-mom; Darling Lili
If you ever want to get a little bit of the Chanukah spirit try making some potato latkes (Jewish style potato pancakes) served with apple sauce and sour cream on the side. They're a staple of Chanukah celebrations. I can promise you some were on the buffet mentioned in the original post.

Yes. One additional candle is lit each night until the candelabra is full. So the photos should be from night #7
