Dowd relied upon the testimony of folks like Jansen,
and other Coke dealers in Cincy that knew they could ride the Rose train out of town.Pete was cutting his losses when it came to the deal......And Vincent and crew had nothing, otherwise they would have produced it!
( Again, no hard feelings)

Some things are simple. I thought about having a bumper sticker that would express the truth about two scoundrels in only six words: Keep Rose Out. Keep Pollard In.

The real point here is that the HOF should be totally separate from baseball. Pete should not be allowed back into the professional side...either as a manager or a consultant...but he ought to be recognized for what he did as a player. Its time that the fans take the HOF away from MLB and run it ourselves. If we want do this thing right...we need to address Shoeless Joe Jackson at the same time too...because he ought to be sitting in the HOF as well.

Absolutley,
keep the bastard out, he cheated and rules can't be bent for cheats, period. It is like everything else, once you bend the rules for one the walls come tumblin' down.

Why should Rose be banned when
Owners Wager on MLB ? Rule 21 allows for it.
The sad fact is that until there is true NFL-style salary cap, MLB is a "Banked Game";
Just as a blackjack game is a "banked card game".
Sorry Bud Selig, the game's integrity is in question......

I don't like that he gambles on baseball at all, I would have no problem if it were betting on other sports than one he has some part and control over.

What are the latest odds in Vegas on whether he'll be reinstated or not?

If Jimmy Carter be for it, I be agin it.
"Mumbles" gives his standard, rambling "can't we all get along" spiel that he stole from the real Rodney King.

The report on Rose's gambling included checks to his bookie, phone records that showed he was calling his bookie (even during games from the dugout), and betting sheets in his own handwriting.
Pete Rose basically admitted he was gambling on baseball when he accepted his banishment.
In addition to that, he also spent time in prison for being a tax cheat.
But you still can't get it into your head that your hero is a cheat and a scumbag.

My Bad,
I thought you meant that he cheated at baseball.
But if it is just the IRS that he lied to, I guess I can live with it. :)
The agreement that Rose signed very specifically denied that it was conclusive that he bet on baseball.
He is not my hero by the way, he just deserves his just place in the Hall Of Fame.

Rule 21 states: Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible. You presented evidence that Pete Rose bet on some games of baseball. What is the specific evidence that he bet in any game with which he had a duty to perform? I do not doubt that such evidence exists, but the rule as given would not seem to prohibit betting on games between teams for which the bettor had no duty to perform (even though such betting, should for various reasons, be banned as well).

Say what you will, but in my hometown..he's still seen as one of baseball's greatest. Therein lies the problem with the morally bankrupt Liberals that hate America at the NY Times and those of us who had the pleasure growing up watching him play ball. On one hand, they have the "morals" to pass judgement on Pete Rose. On the other hand, they believe we should be hugging terrorists. Reinstate Pete, Screw The Terrorists!

Was Pete Rose one of the greatest ever? Absolutely. I tried to emulate his hustle when I was a kid. I alway ran out walks.
But,is there a sign posted at the entrance of every clubhouse in MLB specifcally prohibiting gambling? Yes there is.
If he bet on baseball he is out. For life. If he bet against his team, then it is over.
As soon as Shoeless Joe is in, we can start talking about Pete. Joe's life is over. I think Joe's ban is moot now. I suggest we treat Pete on the same grounds.

Funny this thread is still going on. Good point. I did not present enough evidence to prove that he is in violation of Rule 21, but at least I made it clear that he bet on baseball, which some people are still in denial about.

I guess it would be okay if he had just hacked up his wife or sold drugs to school kids. Too bad he crossed the line and may have gambled. From what I remember the guy doing the investigation had a a definate bias and spent the whole time trying to build a circumstancial evidence case since there was no solid evidence. They had alot of physical evidence he bet on other sports but strange enough the same bookie had nada, zippo, zilch evidence he ever bet on baseball. Pete is a turd but he is still one of the all-time greats and should be in the HOF. IMHO
