Apologies for the vanity post. But I want to rant a bit.

In the past few months, ping lists have proliferated to the point of annoyance. And it is especially irksome to find oneself on a list without having requested inclusion.

There's a word for this: .

Ponder this question, Chester: Did I ask to be on your #%&@ing ping list? No? Well, then. Draw the logical conclusion. If I wish to be on your ping list, rest assured you'll be the first to know. But while you wait with bated breath for my entreaty to be a party to your wisdom, I'll thank you not to make the assumption that I consider your blog indispensable.

Personally, I'd like to see pinging stopped entirely, via the placing of a limit on the number of people a post may be directed to -- preferably one, but no more than five, in my opinion. But failing that, it should at least be the case that unsolicited spam has no place on Free Republic.

I've often thought that graphics on the My Comments page are a waste of bandwidth. We can see the graphics if we decide to look at the thread. Good thought, jmc.

One other thing that wastes a lot of our time is TRYING to find out who pinged us on a long thread because a long ping list ends with "..." and you can't tell which one has your name on it.

Oh, wow! Sorry to hear about your dad. I hope that 3-6 month prognosis is just the "standard" time they usually say, and that he hangs tough a lot longer.

How about an alternative idea, perhaps the ops could code in an option that allows people to ignore msgs pinging them if they have more than X recipients. That would allow people who hate pings lists to completely opt out while still preserving the feature for those who might find them useful.

I think Ping lists have some use for some people, but they should send a private freepmail first asking if the person would find it useful to be pinged for posts on specific topics.

The point is- don't add anyone to a ping list unless they SPECIFICALLY ASK TO BE ADDED.

Otherwise, un-requested pings are no better than SPAM.

Why should the pingee be responsible for being taken off of lists they don't want to be on in the first place? I'd say the pinger should initiate the contact rather than just putting my name on the list and when I ask in the open forum to be removed, they get all pissy about it.

The freeper foxhole is a GREAT project. I visit it often. And will continue to. thanks for removing me from the automatic ping list because I visit without a ping... and expect to see it every day.

Ok, I've spammed. I want to apologize to anyone that was offended by my spamming. It was insensitive and I should've known better.

I'm not proud of it.

But I didn't know I was spamming at the time.

It was innocent.

Maybe because I haven't personally been overpinged, I'm on the pro-ping side, with the caveat that the pingee has the right to be depinged and the pinger should graciously oblige. Accommodation for all in this land of the free!
