Who Needs Bush’s States?

We are all fed up.

This country is in the grip of the right wing of the Republican Party. George W. Bush is not only planning the war in Iraq but is now plotting to break the federal unions with his plot to privatize up to 850,000 federal jobs. Among other things.

More than 200 miles north of the White House, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on Thursday declared his intent to slash services to his fellow New Yorkers and hike taxes to resolve the city’s horrid fiscal crisis. Maine school districts will soon lose $10 million in funds because of the state’s budget gap. Not to mention many other cities and states in severe financial straits.

Had enough? Quit grousing about the midterm elections and trying to figure out how to oust Bush in 2004, and pseudo-intellectuals need not wax philosophical about proposals to restructure our system of government, as I am tempted to do.

Not only can we dump Bush but set the stage for rebuilding our system of government and focusing on improving the lives of all citizens.

The plan is simple: Secede. That’s right. The northern and West Coast states can secede and still be able to form a near-contiguous country, and maybe even merge with Canada. Perhaps we can convince Floridians and Virginians to join us for strategic, ideological and financial reasons.

We would probably have more than enough money to plug NewYork’s deficit and continue school district programs in Maine.

The southern and western states can likewise form an almost-contiguous bloc which could serve as its own nation. If we split, guess which country will collapse?

Not us northerners and West Coasters. Most of the rich and middle-class people in the country live in these states – California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania and most of the New England states. And the moderate and liberal states number among the most populous states.

That’s a lot more revenue flowing out from these states than from Utah and Wyoming. The federal government could not possibly survive in its present form if it had to depend on the southern and western states, even including Texas.

Their politicians have the audacity to accuse the most vulnerable among us of taking handouts, yet we’re supporting these guys while they exploit the system to tell us how we should live.

As the most ironic case in point, Washington, D.C., has nearly the same population as Wyoming, yet one entity is represented by two senators and a congressman and the other entity has no voting representation whatsoever in Congress. Yet Washington hosts Wyoming’s representatives and their staffs who get to enjoy the city’s services and advantages and at the same time control the rules and money which determine Washington’s fate.

While Washington has much poverty, still many wealthy and middle-class people live there – which means that Washingtonians probably pay more to the federal treasury than Wyoming residents.

In addition, the Republicans may represent the majority of states in the Senate – barely – but Democrats in the Senate represent the majority of the population. The least populous state, Wyoming again, has as much voting power as the most populous state, California.

Something is wrong with this picture. Talk about parasites.

Really, what do we in the north and on the West Coast need with those states controlled by the right wing?

If the northern and West Coast states come together, they can devise their own country from the Potomac River north through Washington and Maryland, through states such as Delaware and Pennsylvania to New York and the New England states.

Then the country’s path would swing west through Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin through to Washington state, and then south through Oregon and California.

Almost all those states are either controlled by Democrats or have a strong Democratic influence. Besides, most sane Republicans reside in the north. The few states which might be Republican or right wing-dominated –New Hampshire, Ohio and Idaho come to mind – could probably be persuaded to go along because of geographical proximity.

Not to mention some basically moderate states slightly to the south or surrounded by arch-conservative states, such as Iowa, West Virginia and New Mexico.

Florida, despite its reputation as a subsidiary of Bush, Inc., is clearly a centrist state. Lots of money flows into Florida through Social Security and Medicare, but many rich people live there.

Since this hypothetical new country borders Canada, it might be worth exploring a merger with our neighbor to the north. We can then take along look at our system of government – unchanged in more than two centuries –to make it more representative and responsive.

All political figures from outside our new nation –including Bush and his administration – would be evicted from their offices.

The inclusion of California, Virginia and Florida (though Florida is far removed geographically) would be advantageous because of their military installations and significant segments of their citizenry which are moderate to liberal.

Perhaps eventually the southern and western states will beg to be allowed back in, but it must be on our terms.

In the meantime, who needs them?

The weasel continues to whine. Shouldn't you be collecting welfare or doing drugs or having an abortion or something?

Those states you name are not "controlled by the right wing."

I am right wing and I assure you, they are far from it.

Collectivism is a failed system. I cordially suggest you read F.A. Hayek's The Road To Serfdom for the reasons why.

There already is a system today that espouses what you apparently believe. IT is North Korea.

Please emigrate and say hello to your new starving countrymen.

Question for you. Dee Cee has outlawed guns. It does not follow our Constitution.

Why does Dee Cee warrant representation again? 'Pod

Bikers, Bikers, Bikers - where is your sympathy for your fellow man? Maybe he's between checks and fixes - you should take that kind of thing into consideration. Maybe we should start a fundraiser for DPL - maybe we can get him an overdose.

-----------------------

The problem is, I notice no concern here for the lack of commitment on the part of afflicted citizens to commit themselves to improving their own lives.
