I think it's for real. I did a Google search which turned up a few similar requests by Dan Olmsted on other sites, re the Lariam malaria medication. They appeared to be genuine, and requested that responses be sent to dolmsted@upi.com -- we could probably confirm authenticity by sending an e-mail there. I expect it would be hard to fake a upi.com e-mail addy, as UPI would be keeping pretty close tabs on that.

Boy, no idea. Just between you and me, the Hoots are VERY opposed to abortion, I can't imagine the community leaders voting any other way.

Free Republic is THE source for information on just about everything. Now that you've found us, you'll probably be hooked. For the best results, learn all the ins and outs of freepmail, pinging, searching, etc. (I pinged all the freepers who are registered as being from SD for you, but not all freepers give their state when they register, so that procedure always misses some people).

I found this site during the last presidential election fiasco. I quickly realized that there was no substitute for the kind of "on location" reports that were being posted here. Some of the most memorable were from voters in various precincts in Florida, describing exactly how things had worked at their voting location -- my favorite was from a precinct where "little old ladies were sitting at the table with pads of paper ballots, and you just helped yourself; you could take as many as you wanted".

True, but I have heard stories that would lead a person to believe that some particular leaders are not immune to corruption and deal-making that would benefit their business operations.

The trouble is, this could be hard to investigate, because most of these folks, if told to shut up, WILL shut up.

But the presence of the FBI in all of this has reportedly scared the bejeebers out of some of them.

Can you go into what you mean by power outages? Were some reported?

I remember that in Missouri in the past there was a history of power outages in key districts on election days where there were close races, with much greater regularity than there normally are power outages in Missouri. Bill Federer complained about this the year he gave Gephardt a good run.

I'm more curious about it now too. I have a lot of friends among the hoots, the young men would often leave the colony for a short while after reaching 18, to make a little money and raise a little heck, and they would work as hired men for my dad from time to time. I'll ask, and I know who to ask to get a straight answer, he's a leader now but has been close friends of the family for 35 years. BTW, they are VERY leary of the government. They remember persecution in WWI very well yet.

I'm still putting pieces together here. I voted absentee for Thune myself...I was in WV helping Jay Wolfe in his race against Rockefeller.

But there was at least one county...and I think it was one with a heavy Hutterite population...that came in even later than the reservations. My memory is that the reason given for the late arrival of those votes was that there was a power outage at that county's courthouse.

Can someone else help me here?...I was a thousand miles away. Was it Davison?...or another...?

If voting made any real difference, it would have been banned long ago. It's the second amendment, or rather the exercise of the right it protects, that in turn protects the other rights, including the right to vote.

"Republican Congressman John Thune led Democratic Senator Tim Johnson as of 2:00am mountain time Wednesday morning in the race for Johnson's seat in the United States Senate. With 785 of 844 precincts reporting, Thune led Johnson 159,252 to 156,038. Libertarian Kurt Evans was a distant third with 2,910 votes. Ballot counting problems slowed the tallying of some returns in the eastern part of the state."

That's what I have found so far. Eastern part of the state.

I don't think I've ever heard of the print media doing an investigative piece on vote fraud. They were hot-to-trot to uncover the "real" winner in FL but ignored any suggestion of vote fraud.

Anybody know of any links to such articles?

Yeah, Thune had a pretty substantial lead at that point...over 3000 votes...which makes the final outcome smell that much more.

My understanding is that the areas along the James River that are heavily Hutterite are the areas that mysteriously came in late on Election Night.

It seems that with their communal and pacifistic beliefs, they would ideologically tend more towards voting Democratic, but then again being religious probably don't think much of the escapades of Bent Willy and his pet tree AlGore either.
