WNBC ^ | September 30, 2002 | The Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Robert Torricelli, a prolific fund-raiser whose re-election hopes were severely damaged by an ethics controversy, has decided to drop out of the race to make room for a possible Democratic replacement on the Nov. 5 ballot, several Democrats said Monday.

I hope so. I hope Forrester has plans to campaign, not against bad ethics, but for himself from now on. The Dims are gonna get a heavyweight to come in and pick up the slack. I hope the courts follow NJ law and do not allow a dim on the ballot. I hope.

Polls have shown Forrester's lead building, in spite of the fact that many people do not know who he is. They were planning to vote against Torricelli, not for Forrester. Now what is he going to do? He can't use the "I will be an ethical Senator and he won't" routine. He better have a backup plan.

Exactly. Torricelli dropped out because he knew he would lose. Now the Demos will try to run a new candidate, who knows who they will try to bring in? I can just hear the screams now. "The Republicans are trying to deny the citizens of NJ a fair choice." So they bring in some heavyweight, he has momentum, publicity, he drops out after the election, the Demo governor appoints a new person. In the meantime, maybe everyone should drop out of races they are worried about losing!

The democrat governor of Washington state a few years ago was a real loser. Lots of scandals were coming out in the year or so before the election. I was salivating over his defeat. Then he dropped out and Gary Locke ran in his place. The rest is history. O, and Locke sucks as a governor. But he IS the first Chinese american governor. And I guess that's all that matters.

Sorry, but I was told, TWICE, by many Republican friends of mine, "There is no way in Hell that Bill Clinton will be elected (re-elected) President of these United States." I guess I don't have faith when the Dims are up to trickery.

Look at Carnahan. A little different situation, but when her husband died, and she jumped in the race, she got the "sympathy" vote. And Missouri is not a liberal state. I just hope that either they can prevent the democrats from putting someone new on the ballot, or that that new person is an incompetent. This has become the Lazio vs. Clinton race of '02.

The big question is whether they will be allowed to break the election laws and put a ringer in his place on the ballot.

Not really much of a question, since the RATs have been in power there forever. Of course they are going to break the laws. The only chance we have is to get in front and say how unfair it is to switch candidates this late in the game. Forrester has already committed too many resources for his battle against the torch (who everyone knew had ethical problems when he was nominated).

He needs an ad on TV now saying the RATS are pulling the bait and switch and should not be rewarded for their trickery. He could do it with a halloween theme. Trick or treat?

The Carnahan situation wasn't all that different from the Torricelli situation. In both cases, the candidate on the ballot dropped out after the deadline for when a party could change it's candidate. In the Carnahan case, the Dems told the public to vote for the dead guy anyway, because the Governor promised to appoint his widow. It was a thoroughly unconstitutional ploy, but the got away with it because Ashcroft didn't want to fight it out of respect for the fact that Mrs. Carnahan had just lost her husband and son. It remains to be seen what the Dems in NJ try to pull off, but it is likely to by just as unconstitutional as the Missouri case.

I think that legally the democrats cannot have anyone on the ballot to replace Torricelli. New Jersey law has a 51 day shut off for putting people on the ballot.

"I think that legally the democrats cannot have anyone on the ballot to replace Torricelli"

Remember the Dem's in Florida, when they wanted the recounts? They went to the DEM-OWNED Florida Supreme Court, and they won their way.....

Seems pretty certain to me that they'll pull the same stunt in New Jersey, and may even put a black candidate on the ballot, and when it goes to the U.S. Supreme court, we'll have Sharpton and Jackson ranting "they stole the election, and black voters have been disenfranchised"....

Also, I agree with the previous post that Hillary's hands are all over this one.......

I'd say Forrester should plan on continuing to hammer the ethics issue. McGreevey's efforts to weasel around the ballot-access law and put his own boy in make him a ripe target in his own right--and if they do get another candidate on the ballot, that candidate should be asked pointedly just where s/he was when his party was nominating a certified slimeball for re-election.

That is a legitimate issue, which the Democrats were never asked about x42--which drives me crazy to think about, btw. If it comes to other issues, those should be debated with the remaining candidates on the ballot. I understand the Green Party still has a nominee . . .

The problem I see is that the demoRats have the trump card here - they can still guarantee that they hold the Senate seat from NJ - at least for the next 2 years.

1) The Torch did not resign from the Senate - not yet. Their first attempt will be to get their "White Night" candidate approved for the ballot.

2) If they loose that illegal attempt or succeed but the polls show the new replacement "White Night" might not pull it off, then the Torch resigns from the Senate - mid-October at the latest.

3) Now, with a vacant Senate seat, the NJ gov demoRat cancels the election, appoints a replacement for 2 years (like Carnahan case) - and the demoRats hold that seat.

Speaking of California, I saw a news item last week that showed Arnold Swarznegger(sp?) beating Davis, so the GOP should by this logic be able to remove Simon from the ballot and add Arnie.

The Governor can't effectively cancel the election, even if the Torch resigns. He can only appoint a lame-duck. My real worry is that the Democrats are doing this even though they know they are unlikely to get a replacement on the ballot.

Their real plan:

1) They know that the Torch will lose. So they have no downside.

2) Maybe they whine enough to get a replacement, and maybe he'll win.

3) Better yet for them, the law is followed, and they get no replacement. They will of course lose this one seat, which they'd lose anyway. Then they'll whine a lot about how unfair it (i.e., following the law) is. Then all the idiots in the middle -- the swing voters who actually decide all close elections will feel sorry (or outraged) for them. And the Dems will win other seats in the Senate and House which they would lose otherwise.

In a way, it's like all the screaming in Florida. The question is whether anti-legal screams for "fairness" will fool more people than they will appall. As in Florida, they're betting on enough swing voters being idiots.

Washington, D.C. - Senator Bill Frist, (R-TN), Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), made the following statement today following Senator Robert Torricelli's (D-NJ) announcement:

The law in New Jersey is very clear: an individual may not pull his or her name from the ballot less than 51 days from the election. The National Republican Senatorial Committee will participate in any challenge to the effort by the Democratic Party to replace Senator Robert Torricelli on the general election ballot. If there were to be exceptions to the law, it is highly unlikely that fear of losing an election would be one of them.

The law will prevail & Torch will remain on the ballot unless.....

He's gets Arkansided.... That's the only LEGAL way he gets replaced on the ballot. And don't think for one minute the Torch doesn't know it. Bush ought to offer him secret service protection. Bet he'd gladly take him up on it.

The rats will do ANYTHING to win.

The law is clear. They cannot name a replacement. If the NJ courts allow one, Forrester will take it to the U.S. Supremes.

The DemocRATs will bitch that in 2000 the SCOTUS selected the President and in 2002 they will select the leadership in the Senate.

We need to be prepared to counter them by pointing out that the SCOTUS is only correcting attempts by the DemocRATs to subvert the rule of law. AGAIN.

Torricelli said: "I could not stand the pain if any failing on my part will do damage to the things and the people that I have fought for all of my life."

He sounds suicidal to me. If Hillary is involved he might want to consider getting himself locked up for his own good for the next 5 weeks.... just in case.

Little Tommy knows what only the insiders know... that the Torch is toast. Word has it that lots more corruption info was coming out about him, which would hand the seat to the pubbies (probably in a landslide, in demwit country). So, in typical fashion, the dems are eating one of their own who happened to get caught. Trying to change the rules and cheat in order to hold onto power is their only hope. These rats are desperate, and you know what they say about desperate people.... Watch out!

Under federal election rules, Torricelli could not transfer his remaining millions to a successor candidate.

What do election rules have to do with Democrats running for office?

He's a typical democrat meglamaniac. Actually it was a brillant move on his part, IMO. Keeps him alive for the time being... I'm not spoofing when I say that the Torch had a huge bulls eye on the back of his head (aka Arkancide), until he went public. And if you ask me, he's not "out of the woods yet", as the demrats know, the courts will rule against them as long as the Torch is alive and kicking. He better beef up his security and make it known that he's "NOT SUCIDAL".

"Well LEGALLY, algore lost the election, but look aht they tried to pull then."

The Dems are going to try to subvert the rule of law once again. One of the local news outlets here in Jersey has stated that the state has a Democrat Attorney General, and a majority in the NJ Supreme Court, so the Dems should have the ability to get a ruling in their favor (who cares what the law says?). As soon as they get their ruling, that punk in the Governor's mansion intends to name a replacement candidate within 48 hours.
