Dan Walters: Davis enlists top cops to press Republicans on budget -- with a twist

As Gov. Gray Davis searches -- so far in vain -- for enough Republican votes to enact his budget in the state Assembly, he is employing a powerful force of allies: sheriffs and big-city chiefs of police.

The governor's press office trotted out a squad of top cops on July 1 -- the first day of the state's new fiscal year -- to warn that unless the budget is adopted quickly, law enforcement programs will be imperiled.

GrayDown's playing politics with public safety instead of meeting and negotiating with Republicans to produce a responsible state budget for California's future. Sorry, as long as he and his party indulge in childish antics like this they will get no cigar --- and no state budget.
