UN: 'Get Out'
Face Of Teen Girl Suicide Bomber

Bush Calls For 'De-escalation' Of Violence

The UN Security Council has passed a resolution calling on Israel to leave the Palestinian town where Yasser Arafat is being held.

The demand followed an emergency overnight debate on the issue.

With the Palestinian president claiming he would rather die than surrender, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan urged Israel to halt its assault on Ramallah and also for Palestinians to stop "horrific terrorist attacks" against Israeli civilians.

The UN also called on Israel to withdraw from other Palestinian-ruled towns it occupies.

America changed its tack and backed the resolution - on Friday it had expressed sympathy with Israel's position.

Electricity cut

Israeli tanks moved in on Arafat's Ramallah HQ on Friday, smashing their way into the compound and clearing all but two rooms of personnel.

At least two Palestinians and two Israeli solders were killed while electricity and water has been cut off.

The move has fuelled speculation that the Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has started an endgame to oust Arafat.

Suicide attacks

The assault was launched following a series of Palestinian suicide attacks, including one in Netanya which killed 22 people.

On Friday, a young Palestinian girl killed two people in a suicide attack on a Jerusalem supermarket.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell condemned the suicide bombings but asked Israel to "show necessary restraint" and not to put Arafat's life in danger.

'Enemy'

In a television address, Sharon branded Arafat "an enemy" of the state and vowed to isolate him even more.

He also said "widespread action" would be taken against Palestinians and that the Palestinian Authority would be pursued on all its territory.

Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erekat said the Israeli action amounted to a declaration of a "comprehensive war".
